I came from a purely Hindu family where we were always taught to regard ourselves (i.e. women) as beings who were eventually to be married off and have children and serve the husband - whether he was kind or not.  Other than this, I found that there were a lot of things which really oppressed women, such as:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If a woman was widowed, she would always have to wear a white sari (costume), eat vegetarian meals, cut her hair short, and never re-marry.  The bride always had to pay the dowry (bridal money) to the husband’s family.  And the husband could ask for anything, irrespective of whether the bride would have difficulty giving it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Not only that, if, after marriage, she was not able to pay the full dowry, she would be both emotionally and physically tortured, and could end up being a victim of “kitchen death” where the husband, or both the mother-in-law and the husband, try to set fire to the wife while she is cooking or is in the kitchen and try to make it look like an accidental death.  More and more of these instances are taking place.  The daughter of a friend of my own father’s had the same fate last year!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In addition to all this, men in Hinduism are treated literally as among the gods.  In one of the religious Hindu celebrations, unmarried girls pray for and worship an idol representing a particular god (Shira) so that they may have husbands like him.  Even my own mother had asked me to do this.  This made me see that the Hindu religion, which is based on superstitions and things that have no manifest proof but were merely traditions which oppressed women, could not be right.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Subsequently, when I came to England to study, I thought that at least this is a country which gives equal rights to men and women and does not oppress them.  We all have the freedom to do as we like, I thought.  Well, as I started to meet people and make new friends, learn about this new society, and go to all the places my friends went to in order to “socialize” (bars, dance halls, etc.),  I realized that this “equality” was not so true in practice as it was in theory.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Outwardly, women were seen to be given equal rights in education, work, and so forth, but in reality women were still oppressed in a different, more subtle way.  When I went with my friends to those places they hung out at, I found everybody interested to talk to me, and I thought that was normal.  But it was only later that I realized how naïve I was and recognized what these people were really looking for.  I soon began to feel uncomfortable, as if I was not myself: I had to dress in a certain way so that people would like me, and had to talk in a certain way to please them.  I soon found that I was feeling more and more uncomfortable, less and less myself, yet I could not get out.  Everybody was saying they were enjoying themselves, but I don’t call this enjoying.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I think women in this way of life are oppressed: they have to dress in a certain way in order to please and appear more appealing and also talk in a certain way so people like them.  During this time, I had not thought about Islam, even though I had some Muslim acquaintances.  But I felt I really had to do something to find something that I would be happy and secure with and would feel respected with.  Something to believe in that is the right belief, because everybody has a belief that they live according to.  If having fun by getting off with other people is someone’s belief, they do this.  If making money is someone’s belief, they do everything to achieve this.  If they believe drinking is one way to enjoy life then they do it.  But I feel all this leads to nowhere; no one is truly satisfied, and the respect women are looking for is diminishing in this way.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In these days of so called “society of equal rights”, you are expected to have a boyfriend (or you’re weird!) and to not be a virgin.  So this is a form of oppression even though some women do not realize it.  When I came to Islam, it was obvious that I had finally found permanent security.  A religion, a belief that was so complete and clear in every aspect of life.  Many people have a misconception that Islam is an oppressive religion, where women are covered from head to toe and are not allowed any freedom or rights.  In fact, women in Islam are given more rights, and have been for the past 1400 years compared to the only-recently rights given to non-Muslim women in some western and some other societies.  But there are, even now, societies where women are still oppressed, as I mentioned earlier in relation to Hindu women.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Muslim women have the right to inheritance.  They have the right to run their own trade and business.  They have the full right to ownership, property, disposal over their wealth to which the husband has no right.  They have the right to education, a right to refuse marriage as long as this refusal is according to reasonable and justifiable grounds.  The Quran itself, which is the Word of God, contains many verses commanding men to be kind to their wives and stressing the rights of women.  Islam gives the right set of rules, because they are NOT made by men, but made by God; hence it is a perfect religion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quite often Muslim women are asked why they are covered from head to toe and are told that this is oppression - it is not.  In Islam, marriage is an important part of life, the making of the society.  Therefore, a woman should not go around showing herself to everybody, only for her husband.  Even the man is not allowed to show certain parts of his body to none but his wife.  In addition, God has commanded Muslim women to cover themselves for their modesty:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“O Prophet!  Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) over their bodies (when outdoors).  That is most convenient that they could be known as such (i.e. decent and chaste) and not molested.” (Quran 33:59)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

If we look around at any other society, we find that in the majority of cases, women are attacked and molested because of how they are dressed. Another point I’d like to comment on is that the rules and regulation laid down in Islam by God do not apply just to women but to men also.  There is no intermingling and free-running between men and women for the benefit of both.  Whatever God commands is right, wholesome, pure and beneficial to mankind; there is no doubt about that.  A verse in the Quran explains this concept clearly:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and protect their private parts (i.e. from indecency, illegal sexual acts, etc.); that will make for greater purity for them.  And God is well aware of what they do.  And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and protect their private parts (from indecency, illegal sexual intercourse, etc.); and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments…” (Quran 24:31)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

When I put on my hijab (veil), I was really happy to do it. In fact, I really want to do it. When I put on the hijab, I felt a great sense of satisfaction and happiness: satisfied that I had obeyed God’s command, and happy with the good and blessings that come with it. I have felt secure and protected.  In fact people respect me more for it.  I could really see the difference in behavior towards me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, I’d like to say that I had accepted Islam not blindly, or under any compulsion.  In the Quran itself there is a verse which says<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“…Let there be no compulsion in religion…” (Quran 2:256)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

I accepted Islam with conviction.  I have seen, been there, done that, and seen both sides of the story.  I know and have experienced what the other side is like, and I know that I have done the right thing.  Islam does not oppress women, but rather Islam liberates them and gives them the respect they deserve.  Islam is the religion God has chosen for the whole of mankind.  Those who accept it are truly liberated from the chains and shackles of mankind, whose ruling and legislating necessitates nothing but the oppression of one group by another and the exploitation and oppression of one sex by the other.  This is not the case of Islam which truly liberated women and gave them an individuality not given by any other authority.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Dans nos sociétés de soi-disant « égalité des droits », on s’attend à ce qu’une femme sorte avec des hommes et ne soit plus vierge passé un certain âge.  Autrement, elle passe pour bizarre.  C’est pourtant là une forme claire d’oppression, même si la plupart des femmes ne le réalisent pas.  Quand j’ai enfin découvert l’islam, il m’est apparu évident que j’allais y trouver la stabilité que je recherchais, une religion claire et un mode de vie complet embrassant tous les aspects de la vie.  Beaucoup s’imaginent que l’islam est une religion oppressive, dans laquelle les femmes sont couvertes de la tête aux pieds en plus de n’avoir ni droits ni libertés.  En fait, l’islam accorde aux femmes, depuis 1400 ans, plusieurs droits qui n’ont pourtant été accordés que récemment aux femmes non-musulmanes, tant dans les sociétés occidentales que dans d’autres parties du monde.  Et il existe, de nos jours encore, des sociétés où les femmes sont toujours très opprimées, comme dans plusieurs régions de l’Inde.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Les musulmanes ont droit à l’héritage, ont droit de faire des affaires, de conclure des ententes et de prendre leurs propres décisions financières sans demander l’avis des hommes de leur entourage.  Elles ont droit à l’éducation et ont le droit de refuser d’être mariées à un homme qui ne leur plaît pas.  Le Coran, qui est la parole de Dieu, contient plusieurs versets ordonnant aux hommes de se montrer bons envers les femmes et rappelant les droits de celles-ci.  Parce que les lois de l’islam sont celles de Dieu et non celles des hommes, elles sont parfaitement adaptées aux besoins des hommes et des femmes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On interroge souvent les musulmanes sur leur tenue vestimentaire, laissant entendre qu’elles sont opprimées.  Pourtant, elles ne le sont pas.  En islam, le mariage est l’un des fondements les plus importants d’une société.  La femme ne doit donc pas s’exposer aux yeux de tous et ne doit montrer ses atours qu’à son mari.  Même les hommes doivent conserver une pudeur et ne montrer certaines parties de leur corps (comme leurs cuisses, entre autres) qu’à leur épouse.  Dans le Coran, Dieu ordonne ainsi aux femmes de se couvrir :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Ô Prophète!  Dis à tes épouses, à tes filles et aux femmes des croyants de ramener sur elles leurs grands voiles [lorsqu’elles se déplacent à l’extérieur].  Elles en seront plus aisément reconnues et éviteront d’être importunées. Dieu est Pardonneur et Miséricordieux. » (Coran 33:59)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Dans la plupart des sociétés non-musulmanes, les femmes qui se font attaquer le sont le plus souvent à cause de la façon dont elles sont vêtues.  J’aimerais également souligner que plusieurs règles établies par Dieu s’adressent autant aux hommes qu’aux femmes.  Par exemple, les hommes et les femmes ne se mêlent pas inutilement les uns aux autres afin d’éviter toute tentation.  Ce que Dieu commande aux êtres humains est bon, pour eux, nul doute là-dessus.  Un verset du Coran dit :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Dis aux croyants de maintenir leur regard baissé et de préserver leur chasteté.  C’est bien plus pur pour eux.  Nul doute que Dieu sait parfaitement ce qu’ils font!  Et dis aux croyantes de baisser leur regard, de préserver leur chasteté et de ne montrer de (leur beauté et) de leurs ornements que ce qui en paraît (ordinairement). » (Coran 24:30-31)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lorsque je mis mon hijab pour la première fois, je ressentis une grande satisfaction d’obéir à un commandement de Dieu.  Je me sentis en sécurité, protégée.  Et je réalisai vite que les gens me respectaient plus, ainsi vêtue; je remarquai clairement une différence dans leur façon de m’aborder.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Enfin, j’aimerais dire que ce n’est pas aveuglément que j’ai décidé de me convertir à l’islam et que personne n’a fait pression sur moi en ce sens.  D’ailleurs, un verset du Coran dit clairement :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Nulle contrainte en religion. » (Coran 2:256)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

C’est avec conviction que j’ai embrassé l’islam.  J’ai connu les deux modes de vie, avant et après l’islam, et je sais que j’ai réellement fait le bon choix.  L’islam n’opprime pas les femmes, mais les libère et leur donne le respect qu’elles méritent.  L’islam est la religion que Dieu a choisie pour toute l’humanité, jusqu’à la fin des temps.  Ceux qui l’embrassent se libèrent des chaînes imposées par les lois des hommes, qui ne créent que des inégalités, l’oppression de certains groupes de personnes par d’autres groupes de personnes et l’exploitation d’un sexe par l’autre sexe.  L’islam est la seule religion qui ait réellement libéré les femmes et qui leur a donné une individualité qu’aucune autre autorité ne leur a jamais donnée.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich komme aus einer rein hinduistischen Familie, wo uns (Frauen) immer beigebracht wurde, uns als Wesen zu betrachten, die, wenn sich die Gelegenheit ergibt, geheiratet werden und Kinder haben werden und dem Ehemann dienen – sei er freundlich oder nicht.  Hiervon abgesehen fand ich, dass es eine Menge Dinge gibt, die die Frauen wirklich unterdrücken, wie: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Wenn eine Frau verwitwet ist, muss sie immer einen weißen Sari (Bekleidung) tragen, vegetarisch essen, ihre Haare kurz schneiden und darf sich nie wieder neu verheiraten.  Die Braut muss der Familie des Bräutigams eine Mitgift (Brautgeld) zahlen.  Und der Bräutigam kann alles mögliche verlangen, egal, ob die Braut Schwierigkeiten haben würde, es zu geben. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nicht nur dass sie, wenn sie nach der Hochzeit nicht in der Lage ist, die komplette Mitgift zu bezahlen, emotional und körperlich gequält wird und als Opfer des “Küchentodes” enden könnte, wo der Ehemann oder die Schwiegermutter und der Ehemann zusammen versuchen, die Frau beim Kochen oder wenn sie in der Küche ist, in Brand zu setzen und es wie einen Unfall aussehen zu lassen.  Immer mehr derartiger Fälle gibt es.  Die Tochter eines Freundes meines Vaters erlitt letztes Jahr dasselbe Schicksal! <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Außerdem werden Männer im Hinduismus buchstäblich wie Götter behandelt.  In einer der religiösen hinduistischen Festlichkeiten beten unverheiratete Mädchen und dienen einem Götzen, der einen bestimmten Gott (Shira) repräsentiert, damit sie Ehemänner wie ihn bekommen.  Sogar meine eigene Mutter bat mich, das zu tun.  Dies zeigte mir, dass die hinduistische Religion, die auf Aberglauben und Dingen basiert, die keinen wirklich Beweis haben, sondern lediglich Traditionen sind, welche die Frauen unterdrücken, nicht richtig sein kann. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Später als ich nach England kam, um zu studieren, dachte ich, dass dies wenigstens ein Land sei, das Männern und Frauen gleiche Rechte gewährt und sie nicht unterdrückt. Wir haben alle die Freiheit, zu tun, was wir wollen, dachte ich.  Nun fing ich an, Menschen zu treffen und neue Freunde zu finden, die neue Gesellschaft kennenzulernen, und aus „Gesellschaftlichkeit“ alle Orte zu besuchen, zu denen meine Freunde gingen (Bars, Tanzlokale, usw); ich bemerkte, dass diese „Gleichheit“ in Wahrheit nicht so in die Praxis umgesetzt wurde, wie die Theorie sagte. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Äußerlich werden den Frauen die gleichen Rechte gewährt, was Bildung, Arbeit, und so weiter betrifft, aber in Wirklichkeit werden Frauen immer noch auf eine andere, feinere Art und Weise unterdrückt.  Als ich mit meinen Freunden zu jenen Orten ging, wo sie sich immer aufhielten, freute ich mich, dass jeder sich mit mir unterhalten wollte und ich dachte, das wäre normal.  Aber nur wenig später stellte ich fest, was diese Menschen tatsächlich wollten.  Ich fing schon recht bald an, mich immer unwohler zu fühlen, als wäre ich nicht ich selbst: Ich musste mich auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise kleiden, damit die Menschen mich mögen, und ich musste auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise sprechen, um ihnen zu gefallen.  Ich merkte schon bald, dass ich mich immer unwohler fühlte, war immer weniger ich selbst, aber ich konnte dem nicht entkommen.  Jeder sagte, er würde sich vergnügen, aber ich würde es nicht als Vergnügen bezeichnen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich denke, Frauen werden in dieser Lebensweise auch unterdrückt: sie müssen sich auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise bekleiden, um zu gefallen und anziehend zu wirken, und auch auf eine bestimmte Weise zu sprechen, damit die Menschen sie mögen.  Während dieser Zeit hatte hatte ich noch nicht über den Islam nachgedacht, obwohl ich ein paar muslimische Bekannte hatte.  Aber ich fühlte, dass ich wirklich etwas tun musste, um etwas zu finden, das mich glücklich macht und womit ich mich sicher und respektiert fühle.  Etwas, an das ich glauben konnte, denn jeder hatte einen Glauben nachdem sie lebten.  Wenn Spass zu haben, indem man mit anderen Menschen gut auskommt, der Glaube mancher Menschen ist, dann tun sie das.  Wenn Geld verdienen der Glaube mancher Menschen ist, tun sie alles, um das zu erreichen.  Wenn sie glauben, dass Trinken die einzige Möglichkeit ist, das Leben zu genießen, dann tun sie es.  Aber ich fühle, dass dies alles zu nichts führt; keiner ist wirklich zufrieden, und der Respekt, nach dem Frauen sich sehnen, wird auf diese Weise immer geringer. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

In dieser Zeit der sogenannten “Gesellschaft der gleichen Rechte” wird von dir erwartet, dass du einen Freund hast (oder du bist komisch!) und keine Jungfrau zu sein.  Dies ist eine Art der Unterdrückung, auch wenn manche Frauen es nicht wahr haben wollen.  Als ich zum Islam kam, war offensichtlich, dass ich schließlich dauerhafte Sicherheit gefunden hatte.  Eine Religion, einen Glauben, der so vollständig und in jedem Aspekt des Lebens deutlich war.  Viele Menschen haben das Missverständnis, dass der Islam eine Frauen unterdrückende Religion sei, wo Frauen vom Kopf bis zu den Zehen bedeckt seien und wo ihnen keinerlei Freiheit oder Rechte gewährt würden.  Tatsache ist, dass Frauen im Islam mehr Rechte besitzen und das bereits seit den letzten 1400 Jahren im Vergleich zu den erst vor kurzem gewährten Rechten nicht-muslimischer Frauen in manchen westlichen und anderen Gesellschaften.  Aber es gibt, selbst heutzutage, Gesellschaften, wo Frauen immer noch unterdrückt werden, wie ich bereits zuvor über hinduistische Frauen erwähnt habe. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Muslimische Frauen besitzen das Recht auf Erbschaft.  Sie haben das Recht, ihren eigenen Handel und ihre eigenen Geschäfte zu betreiben.  Sie besitzen das vollständige Recht, über ihren Besitz zu verfügen, wozu ihr Ehemann kein Recht hat.  Sie haben ein Anrecht auf Bildung, das Recht, eine Ehe abzulehnen, solange diese Ablehnung vernünftige und berechtigte Gründe hat.  Der Qur´an, das Wort Gottes, enthält selbst viele Verse, die den Männern befehlen, freundlich zu ihren Frauen zu sein und betont die Rechte der Frauen.  Der Islam liefert die wahren Gesetze und Regeln, denn sie sind NICHT von Menschen gemacht, sondern von Gott; deshalb ist es eine vollkommene Religion. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ziemlich oft werden werden muslimische Frauen gefragt, warum sie vom Kopf bis zu den Zehen bedeckt sind und ihnen wird gesagt, dies sei Unterdrückung – ist es nicht.  Im Islam stellt die Ehe einen wichtigen Teil des Lebens dar, das Aufbauen der Gesellschaft.  Deshalb sollte eine Frau nicht herumgehen und sich jedem zeigen, sondern nur ihrem Ehemann.  Auch dem Mann ist es nicht erlaubt, bestimmte Teile seines Körpers zu zeigen, außer seiner Ehefrau.  Zusätzlich befiehlt Gott den muslimischen Frauen, sich zu bedecken, um ihre Sittsamkeit zu schützen: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“<\/strong>O Prophet! Sprich zu deinen Frauen und deinen Töchtern und zu den Frauen der Gläubigen, sie sollen ihre Übergewänder reichlich über sich ziehen. So ist es am ehesten gewährleistet, dass sie (dann) erkannt und nicht belästigt werden.<\/strong>” (Quran 33:59)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Wenn wir uns in jeder anderen Gesellschaft umsehen, finden wir in der Mehrheit der Fälle Frauen, die angegriffen und belästigt werden aufgrund der Art und Weise, wie sie sich bekleiden.  Ein anderer Punkt, den ich gern betonen möchte, ist dass die Regeln und Gesetze, die im Islam von Gott festgelegt wurden, nicht nur für Frauen gelten, sondern auch für Männer.  Es gibt kein Mischen und Freilauf zwischen Männern und Frauen zum Wohle beider.  Was auch immer Gott befiehlt, ist richtig, wohltuend, rein und nutzbringend für die Gesellschaft; darüber besteht gar kein Zweifel.  Ein Vers im Qur´an erläutert deutlich dieses Konzept.    <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“<\/strong>Und sage zu den gläubigen Frauen, dass sie ihre Blicke senken und ihre Scham hüten und nicht ihren Schmuck sichtbar machen, außer was davon außen ist, und sie sollen ihre Tücher über ihre Kleidungsausschnitte schlagen, und nicht ihren Schmuck sichtbar machen<\/strong>…” <\/strong>(Quran 24:31)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Als ich meinen Hijab aufsetzte, war ich darüber richtig glücklich.  Ich wollte es wirklich tun, ich fühlte eine große Befriedigung und Freude: befriedigt, weil ich dem Befehl Gottes gehorchte und Freude über das Gute und den Segen, der damit kam.  Ich fühlte mich sicher und beschützt.  Die Menschen brachten mir damit mehr Respekt gegenüber.  Ich konnte den Unterschied in ihrem Verhalten mir gegenüber erkennen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Zum Abschluss möchte ich sagen, dass ich den Islam weder blind akzeptiert habe, noch unter irgendeinem Zwang.  Im Qur´an selbst gibt es einen Vers, der sagt:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“…es gibt keinen Zwang im Glauben…” (Quran 2:256)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich habe den Islam aus Überzeugung angenommen.  Ich habe gesehen, war hier und dort, habe dies und das getan, und ich habe beide Seiten kennengelernt.  Ich kenne die andere Seite und habe meine Erfahrungen gemacht.  Und ich weiß, dass ich das Richtige getan habe.  Der Islam unterdrückt die Frauen nicht, sondern der Islam befreit sie und gibt ihnen den Respekt, der ihnen zusteht.  Der Islam ist die Religion, die Gott für die gesamte Menschheit ausgewählt hat.  Diejenigen, die ihn annehmen, sind wirklich befreit von den Fesseln und Ketten der Menschheit, deren Regeln und Gesetzgebung nichts nach sich ziehen, als Unterdrückung einer Gruppe durch eine andere und die Ausbeutung und Unterdrückung eines Geschlechts durch das andere.  Dies ist im Islam nicht der Fall, der die Frauen wahrhaftig befreite und ihnen eine Selbstständigkeit gewährte, wie keine andere Macht. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Vim de uma família puramente hinduísta em que sempre fomos ensinados a nos considerarmos (ou seja, as mulheres) como seres que no fim seríamos casadas, teríamos filhos e serviríamos o marido - fosse ele gentil ou não.  Além disso, achava que havia muitas coisas que realmente oprimiam as mulheres, como:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Se uma mulher enviuvasse, devia usar sempre um sari branco, fazer refeições vegetarianas, cortar o cabelo curto e nunca voltar a se casar.  A noiva tinha que pagar um dote à família do marido.  E o marido podia pedir qualquer coisa, sem levar em consideração se a noiva teria dificuldade em dar o que foi pedido.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

E não apenas isso, mas se, depois do casamento, ela não fosse capaz de pagar o dote integral, seria emocional e fisicamente torturada e podia terminar sendo uma vítima da “morte da cozinha”, na qual o marido ou a sogra e o marido, tentam colocar fogo na esposa enquanto ela cozinha ou está na cozinha, tentando fazer parecer um acidente fatal.  Cada vez mais casos como esse estão ocorrendo.  A filha de uma amiga de meu pai teve esse destino no ano passado!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Além de tudo isso, os homens no Hinduísmo são tratados literalmente como se estivessem entre os deuses.  Em uma das celebrações religiosas hindus as meninas solteiras oram para e adoram um ídolo que representa um deus em particular (Shira), para que tenham maridos como ele.  Até minha própria mãe me pediu para fazer isso.  Isso me fez ver que a religião Hinduísta, baseada em superstições e coisas sem prova manifesta, meramente composta de tradições que oprimiam as mulheres, não podia estar certa.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Subsequentemente, quando vim para a Inglaterra estudar, pensei que pelo menos esse é um país que dá direitos iguais a homens e mulheres e não as oprime.  Todos temos liberdade de fazer o que quisermos, pensei.  Bem, comecei a encontrar pessoas e fazer amigos, aprender sobre essa nova sociedade e ir a todos os lugares que meus amigos iam, para me “socializar” (bares, boates, etc.) e percebi que essa “igualdade” não era na prática o que consta na teoria.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Aparentemente as mulheres recebem direitos iguais em educação, trabalho e assim por diante, mas na realidade as mulheres continuam a ser oprimidas de uma maneira diferente e mais sutil.  Quando fui com meus amigos a esses lugares onde eles se reuniam, vi todos interessados em conversar comigo e pensei que fosse normal.  Mas só depois percebi como tinha sido ingênua e reconheci o que essas pessoas realmente estavam procurando.  Logo comecei a me sentir desconfortável, como se não fosse eu mesma: Tinha que me vestir de certa forma para que as pessoas gostassem de mim, e tinha que falar de certa maneira para agradá-las.  Cada vez me sentia mais desconfortável, cada vez me sentia menos eu mesma e ainda assim não conseguia sair daquilo.  Todos diziam que estavam se divertindo, mas não chamo isso de diversão.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Acho que as mulheres nesse tipo de vida são oprimidas: têm que se vestir de certa forma para agradar e parecer cada vez mais atraentes e também falar de certa forma para que as pessoas gostem delas.  Durante essa época não tinha pensado sobre o Islã, apesar de ter alguns conhecidos muçulmanos.  Mas sentia que realmente tinha que fazer algo para encontrar alguma coisa com a qual ficasse feliz, segura e me sentisse respeitada.  Algo para acreditar que seja a crença correta, porque todos têm uma crença com a qual vivem de acordo.  Se debochar dos outros for a convicção de alguém, eles debocham.  Se ganhar dinheiro for a convicção de alguém, fazem de tudo para alcançá-lo.  Se acreditam que beber é uma forma de curtir a vida, então bebem.  Mas sinto que isso não leva a nada; ninguém está realmente satisfeito e o respeito que as mulheres procuram está diminuindo dessa forma.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nesses dias de uma suposta “sociedade de direitos iguais”, espera-se que você tenha um namorado (ou você é estranha!) e não seja virgem.  Isso é uma forma de opressão, mesmo que algumas mulheres não percebam.  Quando vim para o Islã, era óbvio que tinha finalmente encontrado segurança permanente.  Uma religião, uma crença que era tão completa e clara em todos os aspectos da vida.  Muitas pessoas têm uma concepção errônea de que o Islã é uma religião opressora, na qual as mulheres são cobertas da cabeça aos pés e não têm liberdade ou direitos.  De fato, as mulheres no Islã têm mais direitos e tem sido assim pelos últimos 1.400 anos comparado com os direitos dados apenas recentemente às mulheres não muçulmanas em algumas sociedades ocidentais e outras sociedades.  Mas existem, mesmo agora, sociedades nas quais as mulheres continuam a ser oprimidas como mencionei antes em relação às mulheres hinduístas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As mulheres muçulmanas têm o direito à herança.  Têm direito a gerir seu próprio comércio e negócios.  Têm direito pleno à propriedade e a dispor de sua riqueza, sobre a qual o marido não tem direito algum.  Têm direito à educação, direito de recusar um casamento desde que essa recusa tenha bases razoáveis e justificáveis.  O próprio Alcorão, que é a palavra de Deus, contém muitos versículos ordenando os homens a serem gentis com suas esposas e enfatizando os direitos das mulheres.  O Islã dá o conjunto de regras certas, porque NÃO são feitas pelos homens, mas por Deus; por isso, é uma religião perfeita.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Frequentemente perguntam às muçulmanas por que estão cobertas da cabeça aos pés e lhes dizem que isso é opressão - não é.  No Islã, o casamento é uma parte importante da vida, a base da sociedade.  Consequentemente, uma mulher não deve ficar se expondo para todos, apenas para o marido dela.  O homem também não pode mostrar certas partes do corpo a ninguém, exceto sua esposa.  Além disso, Deus ordenou às muçulmanas se cobrirem para sua modéstia:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ó Profeta!<\/strong>  Dize a tuas esposas, tuas filhas e às mulheres dos crentes que (quando saírem) se cubram com as suas mantas; <\/strong> isso é mais conveniente, para que distingam das demais e não sejam molestadas.”  (Alcorão 33:59)<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Se olharmos ao nosso redor em qualquer outra sociedade, constatamos que na maioria dos casos as mulheres são atacadas e molestadas por causa da forma como se vestem. Outro ponto que gostaria de comentar é que as normas e regulamentações estabelecidos no Islã por Deus não se aplicam apenas às mulheres, mas aos homens também.  Não há mistura entre homens e mulheres para o benefício de ambos.  O que Deus ordena é correto, saudável, puro e benéfico para a humanidade; não há dúvida sobre isso.  Um versículo no Alcorão explica esse conceito claramente:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Dize às crentes que recatem os seus olhares, conservem os seus pudores e não mostrem os seus atrativos, além dos que (normalmente) aparecem...” (Alcorão 24:31)<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando coloquei meu hijab (véu), estava feliz em fazê-lo. De fato, queria fazê-lo. Quando coloquei meu hijab senti um grande sentido de satisfação e felicidade: satisfeita de ter obedecido ao mandamento de Deus e feliz com o bem e as bênçãos que vieram com ele. Tenho me sentido segura e protegida.  De fato as pessoas me respeitam mais por isso.  Pude realmente ver a diferença no comportamento em relação a mim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finalmente, gostaria de dizer que não aceitei o Islã cegamente ou sob qualquer compulsão.  No próprio Alcorão existe um versículo no qual se lê:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“... Que não haja compulsão na religião...” (Alcorão 2:256)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Aceitei o Islã com convicção.  Vi os dois lados da história.  Conheci e experimentei o outro lado e sei que fiz a coisa certa.  O Islã não oprime as mulheres, mas as libera e dá o respeito que merecem.  O Islã é a religião que Deus escolheu para toda a humanidade.  Aqueles que o aceitam são verdadeiramente liberados das algemas e correntes da humanidade, que regula e legisla a opressão de um grupo sobre o outro e a exploração e opressão de um sexo sobre outro. Não é esse o caso do Islã, que verdadeiramente libera as mulheres e dá a elas uma individualidade que não é dada por nenhuma outra autoridade.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
