Indrani and Chandara, Ex-Hindu, Singapore<\/span><\/h1>\r\n

Sister Nishani (previously known as Indrani) and her husband, Brother Rafiq (previously known as Chandara) shared with Sister Muneerah Al-Idros, their path toward embracing Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani was 6 years old when her father died.  Her mother stopped praying as she felt that god had been unfair to make her a widow with 5 little children.  Indrani and here brothers and sisters were brought up as nominal Hindus.  They had neither an altar nor pictures of gods in their house, as many Hindus do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When Indrani was 10 years old she began to love god.  She collected pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses and worshipped them at home.  She felt the need to pray and thought it was odd that, unlike other Hindu families, her family performed few Hindu rites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During her teenage years, Indrani started going to temple thrice weekly.  She encouraged some of her friends to go to the temple with her, as she quickly became more interested in Hinduism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

She participated in bhajanai (devotional singing) activities and became a committee member in Ayyapan Group in Perumal Temple for several years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One day, Indrani became very ill.  She consulted several doctors but was informed that there was nothing wrong with her.  However, her illness persisted.  She later consulted a Swami (a Hindu priest) so that he would clear the sevanai (evil spirits) that she suspected were dwelling inside her.  The Swami and his assistant came to visit her.  The assistant was Chandara, who was involved in her temple’s religious rites, and who had also organized religious trips to Malaysia for Indrani and her friends.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani was very impressed with the knowledge the young man demonstrated while assisting the swami.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After that visit, Chandara dreamt of his favorite goddess, Kaliamma, telling him to take Indrani as his bride.  After much persuasion, his family asked for Indrani’s hand in marriage.  Indrani and her family were pleasantly surprised by the marriage proposal.  Indrani could not believe that her dreams of marrying a pious Hindu had come true.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Unlike Indrani, Chandara was brought up in a religious Hindu family.  On top of that, Chandara was the most religious in his family.  He would often slip into a trance, reciting the holy mantras in praise of the gods and goddesses who would [supposedly] possess him and speak through him.  In Hinduism, it is considered an honor to be possessed by the gods or goddesses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara and other members of the group often got together to listen to the teachings of the swami.  They would also make house visits to chase evil spirits out of other people’s houses and bodies.  This is how Chandara was appointed to be the swami’s assistant.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani had never entered into a trance but had seen Chandara [supposedly] being possessed by the elephant god, Vinayagar.  Chandara would behave exactly like an elephant, eating the fruits that the elephant ate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When in a trance, Chandara would be approached to solve problems.  Those who approached him would prostrate before him, for they regarded him as “God”.  The vibuthi (white ashes) used to anoint the forehead would be brought to Chandara to be blessed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Despite all this, Chandara did not feel complete.  Dissatisfied, he knew there was something not right in his life.  He failed to see the light and always felt that his path was blocked by some kind of darkness which he wanted to clear so he could reach the light.  He knew that were 3360 Hindu gods and he prayed to several of them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Whenever he felt confused, he would go to the library to find out more about Hinduism.  He learned from the elders but knew there was still a lot more to learn.  Many of the Hindu priests did not want to share everything that they knew; knowledge was their rice bowl, and they did not want their source to be taken away.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It was difficult to learn on your own about Hinduism, as most of the writings were in Sanskrit.  Chandara could not find any holy books that satisfied his quest.  All the books were written by different authors and each of them had different ideas about how and when Hinduism started.  Even the Bhagavat Geeta (which emphasized more on Vishnu), Ramayana and Mahabrahta were very limited.  These holy scriptures were more literature books, teaching that we should do good and pray to the gods.  Above all these gods is the female god, who is the Aadhi Parasakhti.  She controls the whole universe.  The essence of Hinduism is to strive at getting a good reincarnation and to worship God and to pray to God through demigods.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During this search for enlightenment, Chandara was approached by a Christian missionary worker in Toa Payoh.  He got involved in Christianity in the hope of enlightenment.  However, he did not like Christianity, mainly due to the behavior of the people in the church; he noticed that young men and women were behaving indecently.  Christianity was not what he was looking for and he withdrew.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Still, Chandara could no longer bring himself to pray to so many gods.  He could worship only one God spiritually and worship the other idols physically, but he did not know who the One God was.  Chandara occasionally still got into a trance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara had curious Malay friends asking him about Hindu worship.  They did not tell him about Islam but they told him that unlike him they pray to one God: God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara, who was the leader among his working mates, would go along with Malays when they performed their Zuhr prayer, waiting while they prayed.  At the same time, he would pray to God in his heart, and ask for the right path.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara was very impressed with the adhan, which had a soothing effect on this.  The adhan touched his heart so deeply, especially when it was followed by the prayer that his friends and other Muslims never failed to fulfill.  He felt like it was so simple to recognize the true God.  “Just worship him.  Why does one need all these idols and mediators?”  It did not take long before he felt it was Islam and God that he had been searching for.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After their marriage, his wife Indrani was still quite active in her temple activities.  She became puzzled when her husband, a more pious Hindu than herself, used to hint repeatedly at the existence of one Almighty God, about praying to one God and that a true religion should not have many gods.  Her mother-in-law felt that her previously pious son might have offended the gods.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even after marriage, Chandara continued his search for enlightenment.  He was trying to search for his One God in Hinduism, trying to know the One God he was praying to spiritually.  He was no longer interested in any of the temple activities, no longer got into a trance.  His mother, while in a trance, pointed out that her son’s change in behavior was due to his being under a charm.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara did not know anything about Islam except that in Islam, God is One.  He would meditate daily and Uthrachamale (… rosary) Usually, he would be chanting the various god’s names.  However, this time when he called out their names he felt something was wrong so he just said in English, “Almighty God, Almighty God...” In his meditation, he knew Muslims are praying to the true God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara’s biggest problem in practicing Islam was Indrani.  She didn’t like Muslims and was active with her temple activities.  He tried to influence his wife on the teachings of Islam by turning on to the Malaysian Islamic programmed on televisions, like “Pedoman.” Indrani would complain that it was not necessary for her husband to take so much interest in Islam.  He took this opportunity to express to her that he no longer believed in Hinduism, reasoning that it does not have a holy book and a basis of belief.  Failing to find out how Hinduism started it merely seemed a culture full of complexity brought down by their ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He bought a translation of the Quran by Yusuf Ali and was deeply impressed when he read about the Prophets, of the beginning of mankind and of heaven and hell.  He found many things that are necessary for every human bring to know and he encouraged Indrani to read it.  When he read that idol-worshippers will be thrown to hell, he had all the idols and pictures removed from their home.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara now concentrated on learning more about Islam from various sources.  He tried to learn more about Islam from his Malay friends.  However, they usually could not give him answers to his questions.  They suggested that he should seek help from … a religious teacher.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara started bringing home books on Islam, as well as on Christianity, Sikhism and Hinduism, telling his wife to read and make a comparison of these religions.  Indrani was not interested she was very satisfied with her belief and with Hinduism.  She told herself that there no way he could influence her with his idea of One Almighty God and swore in her heart that she would bring him back to her way.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani had no intention of reading the books her husband brought home.  Yet when she had trouble sleeping at night, something made her pick up the Quran and read it.  Again and again, when she could not sleep, it was the Quran that she picked up and read.  She felt so lost because since her husband removed the Hindu deities from their home, she could no longer pray to them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani began to have dreams.  During her first pregnancy, she dreamt of the Kaaba.  She related her dream to one of her Muslim colleagues, who the related Indrani’s dream to her father.  He told her that she was fortunate to have dreamt of the Kaaba.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

She also dreamt of Hindu gods giving her warnings and threats but she had more dreams about Islam and pious Muslims.  She continued to pray to Hindu idols, but wondered about her dreams.  When she was expecting her third daughter, she had another strange dream.  She heard a voice coming from the open window of the bedroom window.  The voice said, “I am Muhammad, the Messenger of God.  Follow my way and all evil will go away.  If you want to know more, ask your husband.”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

She awoke after this dream but fell asleep again.  She had a second dream.  In this dream, she saw herself telling her husband about her first dream.  She asked him what the “way” was and he told her to look out the window.  When she did, she saw Yusuf Islam dressed like an Arab giving a talk on Islam, surrounded by other people dressed like him.  Indrani had never seen Yusuf Islam before but she had heard of him.  Somehow, in her dream, she knew it was him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These dreams had a very strong impact on Indrani’s belief.  She became increasingly drawn toward Islam and wanted to follow the way of Muhammad, the Messenger of God, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him.  She recalls that she wanted to accept Islam, but was afraid as she was expecting her third child.  She feared something would befall her baby as she thought of the threats the Hindu deities had made in her dream.  After her delivery, Indrani told her husband that she was ready.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

They were told about Dar-ul Arqam - The Muslim Converts’ Association of Singapore, where they could register their reversion to Islam.  Chandara initially refused as he thought Dar-ul Arqam was affiliated to [another strange organization].  They went to Jamiyah (Islamic Theological Society of Singapore) instead, and registered their names as Mohamed Rafiq and Nishani.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When they announced their reversion, they encountered many problems.  This was especially so when Indrani started wearing the hijab.  Their parents, siblings, relatives and friends who used to hold them dear, now chided them.  All the friends Indrani guided to Hinduism now refused to have anything to do with her, for fear that she may succeed in bringing them to Islam.  They were especially surprised because Indrani used to dislike Muslims more than they did.  Indrani’s parents warned her that her husband must have a hidden interest in having more than one wife.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani and her husband, ostracized by their parents, missed the affection they previously received from them.  Indrani repeatedly told herself that since God loves her so much, the sacrifice she was making in losing her family was nothing.  She knows that no one loves her more than God Himself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Learned Hindus and gurus tried to bring Chandara back to Hinduism but he turned them down politely.  They then severed their relationship with him.  Indrani’s family swore to see that he children Nisha, Nafeesa and Natasha be brought back to Hinduism when they grow up, refusing to acknowledge their grandchildren’s Muslim names.  The children, now studying at the Madrasah (Islamic school), are very pleased with their religion.  Chandara encourages them to wear the hijab, even though they are still young, with the intention of getting them used to veiling.  The parents observed that the children like the hijab so much that they themselves refuse to remove it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Despite being rejected by their families, Indrani and Chandara never gave up trying to improve their relationship with them.  Today, both Indrani’s and Chandara’s mothers have expressed that they have a filial son and a filial daughter. Alhamdulillah [All praise is to God].<\/span><\/p>\r\n

La hermana Nishani (antes conocida como Indrani) y su esposo, el hermano Rafiq (antes conocido como Chandara) compartieron con la hermana Munirah Al Idros, su camino hacia el Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani tenía 6 años de edad cuando murió su padre. Su madre dejó de rezar al sentir que su dios había sido injusto al hacerla viuda con cinco niños pequeños. Indrani y sus hermanos y hermanas fueron criados como hindús nominales. Ellos no tenían un altar ni imágenes de dioses en su casa, como muchos hindús.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando Indrani tenía 10 años de edad, comenzó a amar dioses. Coleccionó imágenes de dioses y diosas hindús y los adoraba en casa. Sentía la necesidad de rezar y pensaba que era extraño que, a diferencia de otras familias hindús, su familia realizaba pocos rituales de esta religión.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante su adolescencia, Indrani comenzó a ir al templo tres veces por semana. Animó a algunos de sus amigos a ir al templo con ella, ya que rápidamente se interesó más en el hinduismo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Participó en actividades de bayanai<\/em> (cantos devocionales) y se hizo miembro del comité del Grupo Ayyapan en el Templo Perumal durante varios años.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un día, Indrani se enfermó mucho. Consultó a varios médicos, pero le dijeron que no tenía nada mal. Sin embargo, seguía enferma. A diferencia de Indrani, Chandara fue criado en una familia hindú religiosa. Además de eso, Chandara era el más religioso de su familia. Él solía caer en trance, recitando los mantras sagrados de alabanza a los dioses y diosas que [supuestamente] lo poseían y hablaban a través suyo. En el hinduismo, se considera un honor ser poseído por los dioses o diosas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara y otros miembros del grupo se reunían a menudo para escuchar las enseñanzas del Swami<\/em>. También hacían visitas a domicilio para perseguir a los malos espíritus de las casas y cuerpos de la gente. Así fue como Chandara fue designado como asistente del Swami<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

No lograba ver la luz y siempre sentía que su camino era bloqueado por algún tipo de oscuridad que quería aclarar para poder alcanzar la luz. Sabía que había 3.360 dioses hindús y le rezó a muchos de ellos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Siempre que se sentía confundido, iba a la biblioteca para encontrar más sobre el hinduismo. Aprendió de los mayores, pero sabía que había mucho más qué aprender. Muchos de los sacerdotes hindús no querían compartir todo lo que sabían; el conocimiento era su tazón de arroz y no querían que les quitaran sus fuentes de ingreso.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Era difícil aprender sobre hinduismo por cuenta propia, ya que la mayoría de los escritos estaban en sánscrito. Chandara no podía encontrar ningún libro sagrado que satisficiera su búsqueda. Todos los libros eran escritos por diferentes autores y cada uno de ellos tenía ideas distintas sobre cómo y cuándo comenzó el hinduismo. Incluso el Bhágavad Guitá (que enfatiza más en Vishnú), el Ramaiana y el Mahábharata eran muy limitados. Estas escrituras sagradas eran más bien libros literarios, que enseñaban que debemos ser buenos y orar a los dioses. Por encima de todos estos dioses está el dios femenino, que es la Aadi Parasajti. Ella controla todo el universo. La esencia del hinduismo es esforzarse en conseguir una buena reencarnación y adorar a Dios y rezarle a Dios a través de los semidioses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante esta búsqueda de la iluminación, Chandara fue abordado por un misionero cristiano que trabajaba en Toa Payoh. Y se involucró en el cristianismo con la esperanza de la iluminación. Sin embargo, no le gustó el cristianismo, principalmente debido al comportamiento de la gente en la iglesia; se dio cuenta de que los hombres y mujeres jóvenes se comportaban de manera indecente. El cristianismo no era lo que estaba buscando, y se retiró.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Aun así, Chandara ya no queríarezarles a tantos dioses. Él podía adorar a un solo Dios espiritualmente y adorar a los otros ídolos físicamente, pero no sabía quién era el Dios Único. Ocasionalmente, Chandara seguía entrando en trance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara tenía amigos malayos curiosos que le preguntaban sobre la adoración hindú. Ellos no le hablaban del Islam, pero le dijeron que a diferencia de él, ellos le rezaban a un solo Dios: Dios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara, que era el líder entre sus compañeros de trabajo, acompañaba a sus compañeros malayos cuando hacían la oración del mediodía, y los esperaba mientras rezaban. Al mismo tiempo, le rogaba a Dios en su corazón, y le pedía que lo guiara al camino correcto.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara estaba muy impresionado con el adhán<\/em>, que tenía un efecto tranquilizante. El adhán<\/em> tocó su corazón profundamente, en especial porque era seguido de la oración que sus amigos y otros musulmanes nunca dejaban de cumplir. Sintió que era muy sencillo reconocer al Dios verdadero. “Solo adorarlo a Él. ¿Para qué necesita uno a todos esos dioses y mediadores?” No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que sintiera que el Islam y Dios eran lo que él había estado buscando.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Después de su matrimonio, su esposa Indrani se mantenía activa en las actividades de su templo. Ella quedó perpleja cuando su esposo, un hindú más piadoso que ella misma, comenzó a insinuar repetidamente que solo existía un Dios Todopoderoso, que hay que rezarle a un Dios y que una religión verdadera no debería tener muchos dioses. Su suegra sintió que su hijo, antes piadoso, podía haber ofendido a los dioses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Incluso después del matrimonio, Chandara continuó en su búsqueda de iluminación. Había tratado de buscar al Dios Único en el hinduismo, tratando de conocer al Dios Único al que rezaba espiritualmente. Ya no estaba interesado en ninguna de las actividades del templo ni en volver a entrar en trance. Su madre, mientras estaba en un trance, señaló que el cambio en el comportamiento de su hijo se debía a que estaba bajo un hechizo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara no sabía nada sobre el Islam, excepto que en el Islam Dios es Uno. Él meditaba a diario y hacía Uzrachamale<\/em>. Por lo general, cantaba los diversos nombres de los dioses. Sin embargo, esta vez cuando mencionó sus nombres, sintió que algo estaba mal, así que solo dijo en inglés: “Dios Todopoderoso, Dios Todopoderoso…”. En su meditación, él supo que los musulmanes le rezan al Dios verdadero.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

El mayor problema para que Chandara practicara el Islam era Indrani. Ella no quería a los musulmanes y estaba comprometida con las actividades de su templo. Él trató de influenciar a su esposa con las enseñanzas del Islam poniendo en la televisión programas islámicos malayos. Indrani se quejó de que no era necesario que su esposo se interesara tanto en el Islam. Él aprovechó esta oportunidad para expresarle que no creía ya más en el hinduismo, argumentando respecto a que no tiene un libro sagrado y a las bases de su creencia. Al no poderse establecer cómo comenzó el hinduismo, parecía simplemente una cultura llena de complejidad arrastrada por sus ancestros.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Él compró una traducción del Corán y quedó profundamente impresionado cuando leyó acerca de los Profetas, del comienzo de la humanidad, y del Paraíso y el Infierno. Encontró muchas cosas que es necesario que todo ser humano conozca, y animó a Indrani a leerla. Cuando leyó que los adoradores de ídolos serán arrojados al Infierno, retiró todos los ídolos e imágenes de su casa.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara se concentró entonces en aprender más sobre el Islam de diferentes fuentes. Trató de aprender más del Islam de sus amigos malayos. Sin embargo, ellos por lo general no podían contestar sus preguntas. Ellos le sugirieron que buscara ayuda de un profesor de religión.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara comenzó a llevar a casa libros sobre Islam así como sobre cristianismo, sijismo e hinduismo, diciéndole a su esposa que leyera y comparara entre esas religiones. Indrani no estaba interesada pues estaba muy satisfecha con su creencia y con el hinduismo. Ella se dijo a sí misma que no había forma de que él pudiera influenciarla con su idea de Un Dios Todopoderoso, y juró en su corazón que lo llevaría de regreso a su camino.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani no tenía intención de leer los libros que su esposo llevaba a casa. Sin embargo, cuando tenía problemas para dormir por la noche, algo la hacía tomar el Corán y leerlo. Una y otra vez, cuando ella no podía dormir, era el Corán lo que tomaba y leía. Se sentía muy perdida porque desde que su esposo quitó las deidades hindús de su casa, ella no podía rezarles.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani comenzó a tener sueños. Durante su primer embarazo, soñó con la Kaaba. Le contó su sueño a una de sus colegas musulmanas, quien le contó el sueño de Indrani a su padre. Él le dijo que ella era afortunada al haber soñado con la Kaaba.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ella también soñaba con dioses hindús que le advertían y la amenazaban, pero tenía más sueños sobre el Islam y sobre musulmanes piadosos. Continuó rezándole a los ídolos hindús, pero se preguntaba sobre sus sueños. Cuando estaba embarazada de su tercera hija, tuvo otro sueño extraño. Escuchó una voz que provenía de la ventana abierta de su dormitorio. La voz dijo: “Soy Muhammad, el Mensajero de Dios. Sigue mi camino y todo el mal desaparecerá. Si quieres saber más, pregúntale a tu marido”.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ella despertó después de este sueño, pero volvió a dormirse. Tuvo un segundo sueño, y en este se vio a sí misma contándole a su esposo sobre el primer sueño. Le preguntó cuál era el “camino” y él le dijo que mirara por la ventana. Cuando lo hizo, vio a Yusuf Islam vestido como un árabe dando una charla sobre Islam, rodeado de gente vestida como él. Indrani nunca había visto antes a Yusuf Islam, pero había escuchado sobre él. De algún modo, en su sueño ella sabía que era él.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Estos sueños tuvieron un impacto muy fuerte en la creencia de Indrani. Ella comenzó a sentirse cada vez más atraída hacia el Islam y quiso seguir el camino de Muhammad, el Mensajero de Dios, que la misericordia y las bendiciones de Dios sean con él. Ella recuerda que quería aceptar el Islam, pero tenía miedo pues estaba esperando su tercer bebé. Temía que algo le sucediera a su hijo debido a las amenazas que las deidades hindús le habían hecho en su sueño. Después del parto, Indrani le dijo a su esposo que estaba lista.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Les hablaron sobre Darul Arqam,<\/em> la Asociación de Musulmanes Conversos de Singapur, donde pudieron registrar su conversión al Islam. Chandara inicialmente se negó al pensar que Darul Arqam<\/em> estaba afiliada a [otra organización extraña]. Así que fueron en su lugar a Jamiyah<\/em> (Sociedad Teológica Islámica de Singapur), y registraron sus nombres como Mohamed Rafiq y Nishani.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando hicieron pública su conversión, encontraron muchos problemas, especialmente cuando Indrani comenzó a vestir el hiyab<\/em>. Sus padres, hermanos, parientes y amigos que antes la querían, ahora la reprendían. Todos los amigos de Indrani guiados al hinduismo ahora se negaban a tener algo que ver con ella, por temor a que ella pudiera tener éxito en llevarlos hacia el Islam. Estaban sorprendidos especialmente porque a Indrani no le gustaban los musulmanes más que a ellos. Indrani y su esposo, condenados al ostracismo por sus padres, perdieron el cariño que antes recibían de ellos. Indrani se dijo a sí misma muchas veces que ya que Dios la amaba tanto, el sacrificio que hacía al perder su familia no era nada. Ella sabía que nadie la amaba más que Dios Mismo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Hindús estudiosos y gurús trataron de regresar a Chandara al hinduismo, pero él los rechazó educadamente. Entonces rompieron sus relaciones con él. La familia de Indrani juró que se encargarían de que sus hijos Nisha, Nafisa y Natasha fueran devueltos al hinduismo cuando crecieran, negándose a reconocer los nombres musulmanes de sus nietos. Las niñas, que ahora estudiaban en la madrasa<\/em>(escuela islámica) estaban muy contentas con su religión. Chandara las animó a vestir el hiyab<\/em>, a pesar de que aún eran muy jóvenes, con la intención de que se acostumbraran a usar el velo. Los parientes notaron que a las niñas les gustaba tanto el hiyab<\/em> que se negaban a quitárselo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A pesar de ser rechazados por sus familias, Indrani y Chandara nunca renunciaron a tener mejores relaciones con ellos. En la actualidad, las madres de ambos han expresado que tienen un hijo y una hija obedientes. Alhamdulillah<\/em>[todas las alabanzas son para Dios].<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nishani, (anciennement connue sous le nom d’Indrani) et son mari, Rafiq (anciennement connu sous le nom de Chandara) ont partagé avec Muneerah Al-Idros le cheminement qui les a amenés à accepter l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani avait 6 ans lorsque son père mourut.  Sa mère cessa alors de prier, car elle estimait que Dieu avait été injuste envers elle en la laissant veuve avec 5 enfants en bas âge.  Indrani, tout comme ses frères et sœurs, fut élevé comme hindou non-pratiquant.  Chez eux, il n’y avait ni autel ni images de divinités, comme dans plusieurs maisons hindoues.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lorsqu’Indrani eut 10 ans, elle commença à aimer Dieu.  Elle se monta une collection d’images de dieux et de déesses hindous et commença à leur vouer un culte, chez elle.  Elle ressentait un besoin de prier et trouvait étrange que, contrairement à d’autres familles hindoues, sa famille ne pratiquât que très peu de rites hindous.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durant son adolescence, Indrani commença à fréquenter le temple trois fois par semaine.  Elle encouragea certaines de ses amies à l’accompagner et se découvrit un intérêt grandissant pour l’hindouisme.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Elle participa aux activités de bhajanai (chants rituels) et devint membre du groupe Ayyapan, au temple Perumal, durant plusieurs années.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un jour, elle tomba gravement malade.  Elle consulta plusieurs médecins, mais ils ne trouvèrent aucune cause physique à son mal.  Cependant, sa maladie persistait.  Elle consulta un swâmi<\/em> (prêtre hindou) afin de chasser les sevanai<\/em>(mauvais esprits) qui, pensait-elle, étaient à l’origine de son mal.  Le swâmi<\/em> et son assistant vinrent la visiter chez elle.  L’assistant était Chandara.  Il officiait à certains rites religieux au temple que fréquentait Indrani et il avait également organisé des voyages religieux en Malaisie pour Indrani et ses amies.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani fut très impressionnée par le savoir que le jeune homme démontrait en assistant le swâmi.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Après cette visite, Chandara fit un rêve dans lequel sa déesse favorite, Kaliamma, lui enjoignait de prendre Indrani pour épouse.  Après s’être efforcé de convaincre sa famille, ses parents finirent par accepter de demander la main d’Indrani pour leur fils. Indrani et sa famille furent agréablement surpris par la proposition de mariage.  Indrani avait du mal à croire que son rêve de marier un hindou pieux venait de se réaliser.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Contrairement à Indrani, Chandara avait grandi dans une famille hindoue très religieuse.  De plus, Chandara en était le membre le plus pratiquant.  Il entrait souvent en transe en récitant des mantras sacrés à la gloire des dieux et déesses qui, croyait-il, venaient habiter son corps et parlaient à travers lui.  En hindouisme, on considère comme un honneur le fait d’être possédé par les dieux ou les déesses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara et d’autres membres du groupe se réunissaient souvent pour écouter les enseignements du swâmi.  Ils effectuaient aussi des visites à domicile pour chasser les mauvais esprits des maisons ou des corps de personnes possédées.  C’est ainsi que Chandara était devenu l’assistant du swâmi.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani n’était jamais entrée en transe, mais avait vu Chandara être [prétendument] possédé par le dieu éléphant, Vinayagar.  Chandara s’était alors comporté exactement comme un éléphant et mangé les mêmes fruits que les éléphants mangent.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Les gens venaient voir Chandara pendant qu’il était en transe et lui exposaient leurs problèmes dans l’espoir de les voir se résoudre miraculeusement.  Ceux qui l’approchaient se prosternaient devant lui, car ils le considéraient comme ‘Dieu’.  On amenait les vibhuti (cendres blanches) utilisées pour oindre les fronts des disciples afin que Chandara les bénisse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malgré tout cela, Chandara ne se sentait pas totalement accompli.  Il était insatisfait et il savait qu’il y avait quelque chose qui clochait dans sa vie.  Il avait du mal à trouver sa voie et avait toujours l’impression que son chemin était bloqué par des ténèbres qu’il voulait absolument lever afin d’accéder à la lumière.  Il savait qu’il y avait 3360 divinités hindoues et il priait plusieurs d’entre elles.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Il avait l’habitude, chaque fois qu’il se sentait confus, d’aller à la bibliothèque pour parfaire sa connaissance de l’hindouisme.  Il avait beaucoup appris de ses aînés, mais il savait qu’il en avait encore beaucoup à apprendre.  Plusieurs prêtres hindous ne voulaient pas partager tout leur savoir; le savoir était leur gagne-pain et ils ne voulaient pas perdre leur source de revenus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Il est difficile d’apprendre par soi-même sur l’hindouisme, car la plupart des écrits sont en sanscrit.  Chandara ne trouvait aucun livre sacré pouvant satisfaire sa quête.  Les livres étaient écrits par différents auteurs et chacun avait son idée à propos de quand et comment l’hindouisme avait commencé. Même le Bhâgavata Geeta (qui mettait plus l’accent sur Vishnu), Ramayana et Mahabrahta se révélaient très limités.  Ces livres sacrés étaient plus des ouvrages littéraires qui enseignaient l’accomplissement du bien et les prières aux diverses divinités.  Au-dessus de toutes ces divinités, il y avait une déesse, Aadhi Parasakhti, qui contrôlait tout l’univers.  L’essence de l’hindouisme est de s’efforcer à avoir une bonne réincarnation et à prier Dieu par l’intermédiaire de demi-dieux.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Au cours de sa quête spirituelle, Chandara fut approché par un missionnaire chrétien travaillant à Toa Payoh.  Il s’intéressa brièvement au christianisme, dans l’espoir d’y trouver sa voie.  Mais il n’aima pas cette religion, principalement à cause du comportement des gens, à l’église.  En effet, il constata que les jeunes hommes et les jeunes femmes avaient des comportements indécents.  Sa quête ne fut pas satisfaite par le christianisme et il cessa donc de s’y intéresser.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara ne pouvait se résigner à prier autant de différentes divinités.  Spirituellement, il ne pouvait plus prier qu’un seul Dieu, mais physiquement il priait les autres.  Il ne savait pas, cependant, lequel était le Dieu unique.  De temps à autres, Chandara entrait encore en transe.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara avait des amis Malais qui, par curiosité, le questionnaient à propos du culte hindou.  Ils ne lui parlaient pas d’islam, mais lui disaient que contrairement à lui, eux ne priaient qu’un Dieu unique.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara, qui était en position d’autorité sur ses collègues de travail, accompagnait les Malais lorsqu’ils allaient accomplir leur prière de dhur (midi), les attendant à l’extérieur pendant qu’ils priaient. Durant son attente, il priait Dieu dans son cœur, et Lui demandait d’être guidé vers le droit chemin.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara était très impressionné par le adhan, qui avait un effet apaisant sur lui.  Le adhan le touchait au plus profond de son cœur, de même que la prière que ses amis et les autres musulmans ne rataient jamais.  Il sentait que c’était tellement simple de reconnaître le Dieu véritable.  « Il faut simplement L’adorer Lui seul.  Pourquoi a-t-on besoin de toutes ces idoles et de tous ces prétendus intercesseurs? »  Peu de temps après, il sentit que sa quête avait porté fruit et que c’était Dieu et l’islam qu’il cherchait depuis si longtemps.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Après leur mariage, sa femme Indrani était demeurée assez active au sein de son temple.  Elle s’inquiéta lorsque son mari, un hindou encore plus pieux qu’elle-même, commença à faire des allusions répétées à l’existence d’un seul Dieu Tout-puissant, à parler de prier un seul Dieu unique et à lui confier qu’une religion véridique ne devait pas avoir autant de dieux et de divinités.  Sa belle-mère pensa même que son fils, auparavant si pieux, avait peut-être dû offenser les dieux.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Même après le mariage, Chandara poursuivit sa quête de vérité.  Il essayait de trouver le Dieu unique dans l’hindouisme, essayant de connaître le Dieu unique à qui il adressait spirituellement ses prières.  Aucune des activités du temple ne l’intéressait plus et plus jamais il n’entra en transe.  Lorsque sa mère entrait en transe, elle disait que le changement de comportement de son fils était dû à un mauvais sort que quelqu’un lui avait jeté.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara ne connaissait rien à l’islam, à part le fait qu’en islam, Dieu est unique.  Il méditait quotidiennement et récitait le rosaire en chantant les noms des diverses divinités hindoues.  Mais depuis peu, lorsqu’il récitait leurs noms, il sentait que quelque chose n’allait pas; alors il se borna à dire, en anglais :  « Dieu Tout-puissant, Dieu Tout-puissant… » .  Dans sa méditation, il savait que les musulmans priaient le véritable Dieu unique.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Le plus grand problème pour Chandara, dans sa pratique de l’islam, était Indrani.  Elle n’aimait pas les musulmans et était restée très active dans les activités de son temple.  Il essaya de convaincre sa femme et de lui présenter les enseignements de l’islam en lui faisant regarder les émissions islamiques programmées par la télévision malaisienne comme « Pedoman ».  Mais Indrani se plaignait en disant qu’il n’était pas nécessaire que son mari s’intéresse d’aussi près à l’islam.  Il saisit l’occasion pour lui annoncer qu’il ne croyait plus du tout dans l’hindouisme, car cette religion n’avait pas de livre sacré ni de base de croyance.  N’ayant jamais pu découvrir les véritables origines de l’hindouisme, cette religion lui apparaissait maintenant comme une culture très complexe façonnée par leurs ancêtres.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Il acheta une traduction du Coran de Yusuf Ali et fut très impressionné par les récits des prophètes, ceux du commencement de l’humanité et du Paradis et de l’Enfer.  Il y trouva plusieurs informations que tout être humain devrait connaître et encouragea Indrani à le lire.  Lorsqu’il lut que les idolâtres seraient jetés en Enfer, il se débarrassa de toutes les statues et de toutes les images d’idoles qui se trouvaient chez lui.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

À partir de ce moment, Chandara se consacra à l’apprentissage de l’islam à travers diverses sources.  Il essaya d’en savoir plus par l’intermédiaire de ses amis malais qui, malheureusement, étaient souvent incapables de répondre à ses questions.  Ils lui suggérèrent de se tourner vers …un professeur de religion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chandara se mit à ramener chez lui des livres sur l’islam, le christianisme, le sikhisme et l’hindouisme.  Il demandait à sa femme de les lire et de comparer ces différentes religions.  Indrani n’était pas du tout intéressée et elle semblait très satisfaite de ses croyances et de l’hindouisme.  Elle était décidée à ne pas se laisser influencer par ces idées de Dieu unique Tout-puissant et s’était juré de le ramener à la raison.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani n’avait aucune intention de lire les livres que son mari avait apporté à la maison.  Toutefois quand elle avait du mal à dormir la nuit, quelque chose lui faisait prendre le Coran et le lire.  À chaque fois qu’elle avait des insomnies, c’était toujours le Coran qu’elle choisissait de lire.  Elle se sentait perdue, car depuis que son mari s’était débarrassé des divinités hindoues, elle ne pouvait plus leur adresser ses prières.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indrani commença à faire des rêves.  Durant sa première grossesse, elle rêva de la Ka’bah.  Elle raconta son rêve à l’une de ses collègues musulmanes, qui elle-même en parla à son père.  Celui-ci lui dit qu’elle devait se considérer comme privilégiée d’avoir rêvé de la Ka’bah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Elle vit aussi, dans ses rêves, des divinités hindoues qui la mettaient en garde et qui la menaçaient; mais ses rêves sur l’islam et sur les musulmans pieux étaient plus fréquents.  Elle continuait de prier les idoles de l’hindouisme, mais se posait des questions à propos de ses rêves.  Lorsqu’elle était enceinte de sa troisième fille, elle fit un autre rêve étrange.  Elle entendit une voix venant de la fenêtre ouverte de sa chambre à coucher.  La voix disait : « Je suis Mohammed, le messager de Dieu.  Suis ma voie et tout mal disparaîtra.  Si tu veux en savoir plus, demande à ton mari ».<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ce rêve la réveilla, mais elle se rendormit par la suite.  Elle eut un second rêve dans lequel elle racontait à son mari son premier rêve.  Elle lui demanda quelle était la voie (dont parlait le premier rêve); il lui demanda alors de regarder par la fenêtre.  Lorsqu’elle le fit, elle vit Yusuf Islam habillé en costume arabe traditionnel donnant un prêche sur l’islam à un groupe de gens habillés comme lui.  Indrani n’avait jamais vu Yusuf Islam auparavant, mais elle avait entendu parler de lui.  Toutefois, dans son rêve, elle sut immédiatement que c’était lui.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ces rêves eurent un impact majeur sur la croyance d’Indrani.  Elle se sentit de plus en plus attirée vers l’islam et voulut suivre la voie de Mohammed, le messager de Dieu (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui).  Elle se souvient qu’elle voulait vraiment accepter l’islam, mais avait peur parce qu’elle était enceinte.  Elle avait appréhendait que les menaces des divinités hindoues, qu’elle avait vues dans ses rêves, ne se matérialisent contre son bébé.  Lorsqu’elle accoucha, Indrani dit à mari qu’elle était désormais prête à accepter l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On leur parla alors de Dar-oul Arqam – l’association des musulmans convertis de Singapour –  où ils pourraient enregistrer leur conversion à l’islam.  Chandara refusa, dans un premier temps, car il croyait que Dar-oul Arqam était affiliée à [un autre organisme avec lequel il avait eu une mauvaise expérience].  Ils se rendirent plutôt à Jamiyah (la société de théologie islamique de Singapour) et enregistrèrent leurs noms en tant que Mohammed Rafiq et Nishani.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lorsqu’ils annoncèrent la nouvelle de leur conversion à l’islam, ils eurent beaucoup de problèmes.  Surtout lorsqu’Indrani commença à porter le voile (hijab).  Leurs parents, leurs proches, leurs amis qui les chérissaient auparavant se mirent à les réprimander.  Toutes les amies qu’Indrani avaient amenées vers l’hindouisme refusèrent de la voir à nouveau de peur qu’elle ne réussisse à les amener vers l’islam.  Elles étaient d’autant plus surprises qu’elles savaient qu’Indrani détestait auparavant les musulmans encore plus qu’elles-mêmes.  Les parents d’Indrani la mirent en garde en lui disant que son mari devait secrètement désirer avoir plus d’une femme.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mis à l’écart par leurs parents respectifs, Indrani et son mari souffrirent du manque de l’affection qu’ils recevaient habituellement de leur part.  Indrani se disait souvent que si Dieu l’aimait, le sacrifice qu’elle faisait en perdant l’appui de sa famille n’était rien en comparaison.   Elle savait pertinemment que personne ne pouvait l’aimer plus que Dieu Lui-même.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Des érudits hindous et des gourous essayèrent de ramener Chandara à l’hindouisme, mais il déclina poliment.  Ils coupèrent alors toute relation avec lui.  La famille d’Indrani jura de tout faire afin que les enfants (Nisha, Nafeesa et Natasha) soient ramenés à l’hindouisme lorsqu’ils grandiraient, et ils refusèrent de les appeler par leurs noms islamiques.  Les enfants étudiaient maintenait à la Madrasah (école islamique) et étaient très satisfaits de leur religion.  Chandara les encouragea à porter le hijab, même si elles étaient encore très jeunes, afin de les habituer à se voiler.  Indrani et Chandara remarquèrent que les enfants aimaient tellement le hijab qu’elles refusaient de l’enlever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malgré le fait qu’ils aient été rejetés par leurs familles, Indrani et Chandara n’ont jamais perdu espoir que leur relation avec eux s’améliore.  Aujourd’hui, les mères d’Indrani et de Chandara ont toutes deux réitéré leur amour filial pour leur garçon et leur fille.
