All I have to say is all what you know already, to confirm what you already know, the message of the Prophet [may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him] as given by God - the Religion of Truth.  As human beings we are given a consciousness and a duty that has placed us at the top of creation… It is important to realize the obligation to rid ourselves of all illusions and to make our lives a preparation for the next life.  Anybody who misses this chance is not likely to be given another, to be brought back again and again, because it says in the Glorious Quran that when man is brought to account, he will say,  “O Lord, send us back and give us another chance.  The Lord will say, ‘If I send you back you will do the same.’”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My Early Religious Upbringing<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

I was brought up in the modern world of all the luxury and the high life of show business.  I was born in a Christian home, but we know that every child is born in his original nature - it is only his parents that turn him to this or that religion.  I was given this religion (Christianity) and thought this way.  I was taught that God exists, but there was no direct contact with God, so we had to make contact with Him through Jesus - he was in fact the door to God.  This was more or less accepted by me, but I did not swallow it all.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I looked at some of the statues of Jesus; they were just stones with no life.  And when they said that God is three, I was puzzled even more but could not argue.  I more or less believed it, because I had to have respect for the faith of my parents.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pop Star<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Gradually I became alienated from this religious upbringing.  I started making music.  I wanted to be a big star.  All those things I saw in the films and on the media took hold of me, and perhaps I thought this was my God, the goal of making money.  I had an uncle who had a beautiful car.  “Well, I said, “he has it made.  He has a lot of money.”  The people around me influenced me to think that this was it; this world was their God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I decided then that this was the life for me; to make a lot of money, have a ‘great life.’  Now my examples were the pop stars.  I started making songs, but deep down I had a feeling for humanity, a feeling that if I became rich I would help the needy. (It says in the Quran, we make a promise, but when we make something, we want to hold onto it and become greedy.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So what happened was that I became very famous.  I was still a teenager, my name and photo were splashed in all the media.  They made me larger than life, so I wanted to live larger than life, and the only way to do that was to be intoxicated (with liquor and drugs).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Hospital<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

After a year of financial success and ‘high’ living, I became very ill, contracted TB and had to be hospitalized.  It was then that I started to think: What was to happen to me?  Was I just a body, and my goal in life was merely to satisfy this body?  I realized now that this calamity was a blessing given to me by God, a chance to open my eyes - “Why am I here?  Why am I in bed?”  - and I started looking for some of the answers.  At that time, there was great interest in the Eastern mysticism.  I began reading, and the first thing I began to become aware of was death, and that the soul moves on; it does not stop.  I felt I was taking the road to bliss and high accomplishment.  I started meditating and even became a vegetarian.  I now believed in ‘peace and flower power,’ and this was the general trend.  But what I did believe in particular was that I was not just a body.  This awareness came to me at the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One day when I was walking, and I was caught in the rain, I began running to the shelter and then I realized, ‘Wait a minute, my body is getting wet, my body is telling me I am getting wet.’  This made me think of a saying that the body is like a donkey, and it has to be trained where it has to go.  Otherwise, the donkey will lead you where it wants to go.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Then I realized I had a will, a God-given gift: follow the will of God.  I was fascinated by the new terminology I was learning in the Eastern religion.  By now, I was fed up with Christianity.  I started making music again, and this time I started reflecting my own thoughts.  I remember the lyric of one of my songs.  It goes like this: “I wish I knew, I wish I knew what makes the Heaven, what makes the Hell.  Do I get to know You in my bed or some dusty cell while others reach the big hotel?”  and I knew I was on the Path.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I also wrote another song, “The Way to Find God Out.”  I became even more famous in the world of music.  I really had a difficult time because I was getting rich and famous, and at the same time, I was sincerely searching for the Truth.  Then I came to a stage where I decided that Buddhism is all right and noble, but I was not ready to leave the world.  I was too attached to the world and was not prepared to become a monk and to isolate myself from society.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I tried Zen and Ching, numerology, tarot cards and astrology.  I tried to look back into the Bible and could not find anything.  At this time I did not know anything about Islam, and then, what I regarded as a miracle occurred.  My brother had visited the mosque in Jerusalem and was greatly impressed that while on the one hand it throbbed with life (unlike the churches and synagogues which were empty), on the other hand, an atmosphere of peace and tranquility prevailed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Quran<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

When he came to London, he brought back a translation of the Quran, which he gave to me.  He did not become a Muslim, but he felt something in this religion, and thought I might find something in it also.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And when I received the book, a guidance that would explain everything to me - who I was; what was the purpose of life; what was the reality and what would be the reality; and where I came from - I realized that this was the true religion; religion not in the sense the West understands it, not the type for only your old age.  In the West, whoever wishes to embrace a religion and make it his only way of life is deemed a fanatic.  I was not a fanatic; I was at first confused between the body and the soul.  Then I realized that the body and soul are not apart and you don’t have to go to the mountain to be religious.  We must follow the will of God.  Then we can rise higher than the angels.  The first thing I wanted to do now was to be a Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I realized that everything belongs to God, that slumber does not overtake Him.  He created everything.  At this point I began to lose the pride in me, because hereto I had thought the reason I was here was because of my own greatness.  But I realized that I did not create myself, and the whole purpose of my being here was to submit to the teaching that has been perfected by the religion we know as Al-Islam.  At this point, I started discovering my faith.  I felt I was a Muslim.  On reading the Quran, I now realized that all the Prophets sent by God brought the same message.  Why then were the Jews and Christians different?  I know now how the Jews did not accept Jesus as the Messiah and that they had changed His Word.  Even the Christians misunderstand God’s Word and called Jesus the son of God.  Everything made so much sense.  This is the beauty of the Quran; it asks you to reflect and reason, and not to worship the sun or moon but the One Who has created everything.  The Quran asks man to reflect upon the sun and moon and God’s creation in general.  Do you realize how different the sun is from the moon?  They are at varying distances from the earth, yet appear the same size to us; at times, one seems to overlap the other.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even when many of the astronauts go to space, they see the insignificant size of the earth and vastness of space.  They become very religious, because they have seen the Signs of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When I read the Quran further, it talked about prayer, kindness and charity.  I was not a Muslim yet, but I felt that the only answer for me was the Quran, and God had sent it to me, and I kept it a secret.  But the Quran also speaks on different levels.  I began to understand it on another level, where the Quran says, “Those who believe do not take disbelievers for friends and the believers are brothers.”  Thus at this point I wished to meet my Muslim brothers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Conversion<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Then I decided to journey to Jerusalem (as my brother had done).  At Jerusalem, I went to the mosque and sat down.  A man asked me what I wanted.  I told him I was a Muslim.  He asked what was my name.  I told him, “Stevens.”  He was confused.  I then joined the prayer, though not so successfully.  Back in London, I met a sister called Nafisa.  I told her I wanted to embrace Islam, and she directed me to the New Regent Mosque.  This was in 1977, about one and a half years after I received the Quran.  Now I realized that I must get rid of my pride, get rid of Satan, and face one direction.  So on a Friday, after the Friday congrational prayer service, I went to the Imam (Prayer Leader) and declared my faith (the Shahaadah) at this hands.  You have before you someone who had achieved fame and fortune.  But guidance was something that eluded me, no matter how hard I tried, until I was shown the Quran.  Now I realize I can get in direct contact with God, unlike Christianity or any other religion.  As one Hindu lady told me, “You don’t understand the Hindus.  We believe in one God; we use these objects (idols) to merely concentrate.”  What she was saying was that in order to reach God, one has to create associates, that are idols for the purpose.  But Islam removes all these barriers.  The only thing that moves the believers from the disbelievers is the salat (prayer).  This is the process of purification.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, I wish to say that everything I do is for the pleasure of God and pray that you gain some inspirations from my experiences.  Furthermore, I would like to stress that I did not come into contact with any Muslim before I embraced Islam.  I read the Quran first and realized that no person is perfect.  Islam is perfect, and if we imitate the conduct of the Prophet we will be successful.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

May God give us guidance to follow the path of the nation of Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him.  Ameen!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lo único que tengo para decir es lo que ustedes ya conocen, confirmar lo que ya saben, el mensaje del Profeta [la paz sea con él] tal como lo transmitió Dios - la Religión de la Verdad.  Como seres humanos, recibimos una conciencia y una obligación que nos ha puesto en la cima de la creación… Es importante darnos cuenta de la obligación que tenemos de librarnos de todas las ilusiones y convertir nuestras vidas en una preparación para la vida del más allá.  Todo aquel que deje pasar esta oportunidad no recibirá otra oportunidad para volver a este mundo, porque en el Sagrado Corán dice que cuando el hombre sea juzgado, dirá: “¿Acaso habrá quien pueda interceder por nosotros [para salvarnos del castigo] o para que se nos conceda otra oportunidad volviendo a la vida mundanal, y así poder obrar correctamente?’”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mi formación religiosa<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Fui criado en el mundo moderno con todos los lujos de la vida cómoda del mundo del espectáculo.  Nací en un hogar cristiano, pero sabemos que todos los niños nacen en su estado original de pureza – son sus padres quienes lo convierten a tal o cual religión.  Me dieron esta religión (Cristianismo) y en ella me enseñaron.  Me dijeron que Dios existe, pero que no había contacto directo con Él, sino que teníamos que hacerlo a través de Jesús – de hecho, él era la puerta hacia Dios.  Eso más o menos lo acepté, pero no me lo creía completamente.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Miraba las estatuas de Jesús; eran como rocas sin vida.  Y cuando me decían que Dios es parte de una trinidad, me confundía aún más pero no podía discutir.  Más o menos lo creía, porque debía respetar la fe de mis padres.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Estrella Pop<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Con el tiempo comencé a alejarme de esa crianza religiosa.  Comencé a hacer música.  Quería ser una gran estrella.  Todo eso que veía en las películas y en los medios de comunicación se apoderó de mí, y pensé que eso era mi Dios, la meta de ganar dinero.  Un tío mío tenía un auto muy lujoso.  Dije: “Bueno, él lo hizo bien.  Tiene mucho dinero”.  Las personas que me rodeaban me incentivaron a pensar que así era; este mundo era su Dios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Decidí entonces que esa era la vida que quería para mí; ganar mucho dinero, tener una ‘gran vida’.  Mis ejemplos eran ahora las estrellas pop.  Comencé a hacer canciones, pero en el fondo sentía algo por la humanidad, sentía que si me hacía rico ayudaría a los necesitados. (En el Corán dice que nos hacemos esa promesa, pero que cuando hacemos riqueza, nos aferramos a ella y nos volvemos avaros).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sucedió que me hice muy famoso.  Aún era adolescente, pero mi nombre y mi foto estaban en todos los medios de comunicación.  Me hicieron muy grande, por lo que quise tener una vida igual de grande, y la única manera de lograrlo era drogándome.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En el Hospital<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Después de un año de éxito económico y ‘alto’ nivel de vida, me enfermé seriamente, contraje Tuberculosis y tuve que ser hospitalizado.  Fue entonces cuando comencé a pensar: ¿Qué me iba a pasar? ¿Era solo un cuerpo y mi meta en la vida era simplemente satisfacer ese cuerpo? Me di cuenta de que esta calamidad era ahora una bendición que Dios me había dado, una oportunidad de abrir los ojos – “¿Por qué estoy aquí? ¿Por qué estoy en una cama?” – y comencé a buscar algunas de las respuestas.  En esos días, había un gran interés en el misticismo oriental.  Comencé a leer, y lo primero que comencé a notar fue el concepto de la muerte y que el alma sigue su curso: No se detiene.  Sentía que estaba tomando el camino del goce y los altos logros.  Comencé a meditar y me hice vegetariano.  Ahora creía en ‘la paz y el poder de las flores’, y esa era la tendencia general.  Pero lo que creía son certeza era que no era solamente un cuerpo.  Esta idea me sobrevino mientras me encontraba en el hospital.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un día cuando caminaba, y la lluvia me tomó por sorpresa, comencé a correr hasta un refugio y me dije: ‘Un momento, mi cuerpo se moja, mi cuerpo me dice que me estoy mojando’.  Esto me hizo pensar en el dicho de que el cuerpo es como un burro, y hay que entrenarlo para que vaya a donde tiene que ir.  De lo contrario, el burro irá a donde él quiere ir.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Me di cuenta entonces que tenía un deseo, un don divino: Seguir la voluntad de Dios.  Estaba fascinado por esta nueva terminología que aprendía en la religión oriental.  En ese entonces, me había cansado del Cristianismo.  Comencé a hacer música nuevamente, y esta vez reflejé en ella mis propias ideas.  Recuerdo la letra de una de mis canciones.  Decía algo como: “Ojalá hubiera sabido, ojalá hubiera sabido lo que hace el Paraíso, lo que hace el Paraíso.  ¿Te llego a conocer en mi cama o en alguna celda polvorienta mientras otros llegan al gran hotel?” y supe que estaba en el Camino.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

También escribí otra canción: “El Camino para encontrar a Dios”.  Me volví aún más famoso en el mundo de la música.  En realidad, la pasé bastante difícil porque era cada vez más rico y famoso, y al mismo tiempo, buscaba con sinceridad la Verdad.  Luego llegué a un escenario en el que decidí que el Budismo era correcto y noble, pero no estaba listo para abandonar completamente este mundo.  Me apegué demasiado a las cosas materiales y no estaba preparado para convertirme en monje y aislarme del resto de la sociedad.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Probé el Zen y el I-Ching, la numerología, las cartas del Tarot y la astrología.  Intenté volver a la Biblia pero no encontré nada allí.  Por aquel entonces no sabía nada del Islam, y entonces, sucedió lo que yo considero un milagro.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mi hermano había visitado la mezquita de Jerusalén y quedó muy impresionado con la idea de que por un lado estaba llena de vida (a diferencia de las iglesias y sinagogas, que estaban vacías), y por otro lado, reinaba allí un ambiente de paz y tranquilidad.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

El Corán<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Cuando mi hermano volvió a Londres, trajo consigo una traducción del Corán, la cual me regaló.  Él no se había convertido al Islam, pero percibió algo especial en esa religión, y pensó que yo también encontraría algo en ella.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando recibí el libro, encontré una orientación que me explicaría todo – quién era yo; cuál era el objetivo de esta vida; cuál era la realidad y cuál sería la realidad; y de dónde provenía – me di cuenta de que esa era la verdadera religión; no la religión en el sentido en el que la entiende en Occidente, no la religión que solo sirve para cuando uno es anciano.  En Occidente, quien desea adoptar una religión y convertirla en su forma de vida es considerado un fanático.  Yo no era un fanático; al principio estaba confundido entre el cuerpo y el alma.  Luego me di cuenta de que el cuerpo y el alma no están separados y que no hace falta recluirse en las montañas para ser religioso.  Debemos seguir la voluntad de Dios.  Luego podemos superar incluso a los ángeles.  Lo primero que quise hacer en ese momento fue ser musulmán.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Me di cuenta de que todo le pertenece a Dios, que Él todo lo creó y que el cansancio no se apodera de Él.  Entonces comencé a perder la vanidad, porque hasta ese momento creía que la razón por la que estaba donde estaba era por mi propia grandeza.  Pero me di cuenta de que no me había creado a mí mismo, y que el único fin de mi presencia aquí era transmitir las enseñanzas que habían sido perfeccionadas por la religión que conocemos como El Islam.  En ese momento, comencé a descubrir mi fe.  Me sentía musulmán.  Al leer el Corán, me di cuenta de que todos los Profetas enviados por Dios trajeron el mismo mensaje de monoteísmo.  ¿Por qué entonces los judíos y los cristianos eran diferentes?  Ahora sé que los judíos no aceptaron a Jesús como el Mesías y que tergiversaron sus libros sagrados.  Incluso los cristianos alteran la Palabra de Dios y llaman a Jesús hijo de Dios.  Todo comenzó a tener más sentido.  Esa es la belleza del Corán; te invita a que reflexiones con la razón, a no adorar al sol o a la luna sino a Quien los ha creado.  El Corán le pide al hombre que reflexione en el sol y la luna y en la creación en general.  ¿Te das cuenta de lo diferente que es el sol de la luna?  Están a distintas distancias de la Tierra, pero nos parecen del mismo tamaño; en ocasiones, uno parece superponerse sobre el otro.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Incluso cuando algunos astronautas van al espacio, ven el tamaño insignificante de la Tierra y la grandeza del espacio se vuelven creyentes, porque han visto una de las Señales de Dios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando leí más el Corán, hablaba de la oración, la bondad y la caridad.  Aún no era musulmán, pero sentía que la única respuesta para mí era el Corán, y Dios me lo había enviado, y en un principio lo mantuve en secreto.  Pero el Corán también habla en distintos niveles.  Comencé a entenderlo en otro nivel, donde el Corán dice: “Ciertamente los creyentes son todos hermanos entre sí<\/strong>”.  Por lo tanto, en ese momento quise conocer a mis hermanos musulmanes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

La Conversión<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Luego decidí viajar a Jerusalén (como lo había hecho mi hermano).  En Jerusalén, fui a una mezquita y me senté.  Un hombre me preguntó qué quería.  Le dije que era musulmán.  Me preguntó mi apellido.  Le dije “Stevens”.  Quedó confundido.  Luego me sumé a la oración, pero sin mucho éxito.  De regreso en Londres, conocí a una hermana llamada Nafisa.  Le dije que quería adoptar el Islam, y me indicó que fuera a la Mezquita New Regent.  Esto fue en 1977, aproximadamente un año y medio después de haber recibido El Corán.  Me había dado cuenta de que tenía que librarme de mi vanidad, librarme de Satán, y tomar un rumbo.  Por eso un viernes, luego de la oración en congregación, fui donde el Imán (el que dirige la oración) y pronuncié mi testimonio de fe islámico (Shahaadah).  Había alcanzado la fama y la fortuna.  Pero la orientación era algo que me evadía, sin importar cuánto lo intentara, hasta que me mostraron el Corán.  Ahora me daba cuenta de que podía ponerme en contacto directo con Dios, a diferencia del Cristianismo o cualquier otra religión.  Como me dijo una vez una mujer hindú: “Ustedes no entienden a los hindúes.  Nosotros creemos en un solo Dios; utilizamos estos objetos (ídolos) sólo para concentrarnos”.  Lo que ella decía era que para llegar a Dios, uno debe tener asociados intermediarios, ídolos que cumplen ese fin.  Pero el Islam elimina todas esas barreras.  Lo único que separa a los creyentes de los incrédulos es la oración.  Ese es el proceso de purificación.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Por último, quiero decir que todo lo que hago es para complacer a Dios y pido a Dios que ustedes obtengan al menos algo de inspiración de mis experiencias.  Aún más, me gustaría destacar que no me contacté con ningún musulmán antes de adoptar el Islam.  Leí primero el Corán y luego me di cuenta de que ninguna persona es perfecta.  El Islam es perfecto, y si imitamos la conducta del Profeta, tendremos éxito en esta vida y en el más allá.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Que Dios nos oriente a seguir el camino del pueblo de Muhammad, la paz y la bendición de Dios sean con él.  ¡Amín!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ce que j’ai à dire vous le savez déjà; cela confirme le message du Prophète, (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui) tel qu’il lui a été révélé par Dieu – la religion de vérité.  En tant qu’êtres humains, nous sommes doués d’une conscience et nous devons nous acquitter de certains devoirs, et c’est ce qui nous situe au sommet de la création… Il est important de comprendre que nous avons l’obligation de nous débarrasser de toutes nos illusions et de faire en sorte que notre vie soit une préparation en vue de la vie future.  Quiconque ne saisit pas cette chance ne s’en verra pas octroyer une autre et ne sera pas ramené sur terre encore et encore, parce qu’il est dit dans le glorieux Coran que lorsque l’homme sera jugé et interrogé, il dira : « Ô Seigneur, ramène-nous (sur terre) et donne-nous une autre chance.  Mais le Seigneur dira, « Si je vous y renvoyais, vous referiez la même chose. »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mon éducation religieuse durant ma jeunesse<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

J’ai grandi dans le monde moderne, entouré de tout le luxe de la haute classe du show business.  Je suis né dans un foyer chrétien, mais nous savons que chaque bébé naît dans son état originel – ce sont ses parents qui en font ensuite un adepte de telle ou telle religion.  On m’a donné cette religion (le christianisme) et on m’a enseigné à penser de la sorte.  On m’a appris que Dieu existait, mais qu’il n’y avait pas de contact direct avec Lui, et que c’était pour cela qu’on devait entrer en contact avec Lui par l’intermédiaire de Jésus – que Jésus était en fait la porte de Dieu.  J’acceptai plus ou moins cette façon de voir, et je ne crus pas tout ce qu’on me disait.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je regardais des statues de Jésus; elles n’étaient que des pierres sans vie.  Et lorsqu’on me parlait de la trinité et qu’on me disait que Dieu était trois, j’étais encore plus perplexe, mais je ne trouvais pas d’arguments pour formuler mes objections.  J’y ai cru, plus ou moins, parce que je devais respecter la foi de mes parents.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Vedette de la musique pop<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Puis, petit à petit, je sentis que l’éducation religieuse dans laquelle j’avais grandi me devenait étrangère.  Je commençai à faire de la musique.  Je voulais être une grande vedette.  Tout ce que je voyais dans les films et dans les médias me fascinait, et quand je pensais à mon objectif de faire de l’argent, je me disais que c’était peut-être là mon Dieu véritable.  J’avais un oncle qui possédait une belle voiture. « Eh bien », me disais-je, « Il a tout pour lui.  Il a plein d’argent. »  Les gens autour de moi m’influençaient à penser de la sorte; ce monde était leur Dieu.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je décidai alors que c’était la vie que je devais mener; de faire beaucoup d’argent et vivre une « super vie ».  Maintenant, mes exemples étaient les vedettes populaires.  Je me mis à écrire des chansons mais, au plus profond de moi, j’avais des sentiments pour l’humanité et je me disais que si je devenais riche, j’aiderais ceux qui sont dans le besoin. (Il est dit dans le Coran qu’on fait une promesse, puis quand on obtient ce qu’on veut on se l’accapare et on devient avare).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Puis, je devins très célèbre.  Je n’étais encore qu’un adolescent, et mon nom et mon visage étaient étalés dans tous les médias.  Ils me faisaient paraître surhumain, alors je voulu vivre une vie plus grande que nature; et la seule manière de le faire était de m’intoxiquer (à l’aide d’alcool et de drogues).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

À l’hôpital<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Après une année de succès financier et à mener la « grande » vie, je tombai gravement malade, ayant  contracté la tuberculose.  Je dus être hospitalisé. C’est à ce moment que je commençai à réfléchir : qu’allait-il m’arriver?  Étais-je seulement un corps, et mon but dans la vie était-il de seulement satisfaire ce corps?  Je réalisai alors que cette calamité qui m’arrivait était en fait une bénédiction de la part de Dieu, une chance de m’ouvrir les yeux – « Pourquoi suis-je ici?  Pourquoi suis-je alité? » – et je me mis à chercher certaines réponses.  À cette époque, il y avait beaucoup d’intérêt pour le mysticisme oriental.  Je commençai à lire et la première chose dont je commençai à être conscient fut la mort, et le fait que l’âme continuait d’exister éternellement après la mort.  Je sentis que je prenais la route de la félicité et de l’accomplissement spirituel.  Je commençai à méditer et je devins même végétarien.  Je croyais maintenant au « pouvoir de la paix et des fleurs », comme c’était la tendance, à cette époque.  Mais ce en quoi je croyais plus précisément, c’était que je n’étais pas seulement un corps.  Cette conscience m’était venue à l’hôpital.       <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un jour que je marchais à l’extérieur, je me fis prendre par la pluie.  Je me mis à courir vers un abri, puis je pensai : « Attends un instant : mon corps est mouillé, mon corps me dit que je suis mouillé. » Cela me rappela un dicton qui dit que le corps est pareil à un âne, et qu’on doit l’éduquer pour qu’il sache où il doit aller. Autrement, l’âne vous mènera où il veut aller lui-même.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je réalisai ensuite que j’avais une volonté, un cadeau venant de Dieu.  Je pensai : « Suis la volonté de Dieu ».  J’étais fasciné par la nouvelle terminologie que j’apprenais dans la religion orientale. À ce stade, j’en avais assez du christianisme.  Je me remis à la musique à nouveau, mais cette fois je fis passer mes propres idées dans mes textes.  Je me rappelle les paroles d’une de mes chansons. Cela disait : « Ah si je connaissais, Ah si je connaissais, qui crée le ciel, qui crée l’enfer. Te connaîtrai-je dans mon lit ou dans une cellule pleine de poussière, pendant que d’autres vont dans un grand hôtel? » et je savais que j’étais sur le bon chemin.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

J’écrivis aussi une autre chanson : « Comment trouver Dieu. »  Je devins encore plus populaire dans le monde de la musique. Ce fut vraiment une période difficile pour moi, car tandis que je devenais riche et célèbre, je cherchais en même temps la vérité de manière très sincère.  Puis vint un moment où je crus que le bouddhisme était bon et noble, mais je n’étais pas prêt à quitter mon matérialisme.  J’étais trop attaché au monde matériel et je n’étais pas disposé à devenir un moine et à m’isoler de la société.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

J’essayai le Zen, le Ching, la numérologie, le tarot et l’astrologie.  J’essayai  de retourner vers la Bible, mais je ne trouvai rien.  À ce moment-là, je ne connaissais rien de l’islam, puis, ce que je considère comme un miracle se produisit.  Mon frère avait visité la Mosquée de Jérusalem et avait été très impressionné en remarquant que bien qu’elle bouillonnait d’activité et de vie (contrairement aux églises et aux synagogues, qui étaient désertes), il s’en dégageait une atmosphère de paix et de tranquillité.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Le Coran<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

À son retour à Londres, mon frère avait ramené avec lui une traduction du Coran, et il me l’offrit.  Il ne devint pas musulman, mais il ressentait quelque chose à propos de cette religion, et il pensait que je pourrais peut-être y trouver quelque chose également.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quand je reçus le livre, ce guide qui allait tout éclaircir pour moi – qui j’étais; quelle était la raison d’être de la vie; quelle était la réalité et quelle serait la réalité future; d’où je venais – je réalisai pleinement que c’était là la religion véritable; pas une religion au sens où on l’entend en occident, pas celle du genre qui préoccupe seulement les vieilles personnes.  Dans la civilisation occidentale, toute personne qui désire embrasser une religion et en faire son unique mode de vie est considérée comme fanatique.  Je n’étais pas un fanatique; j’avais au départ une idée confuse à propos du corps et de l’âme.  Ensuite, j’avais réalisé que le corps et l’âme ne faisaient qu’un et qu’on ne devait pas se couper du monde et aller vivre au sommet des montagnes pour être religieux.  Nous devons suivre la volonté de Dieu.  Alors nous pouvons accéder à des degrés plus élevés que ceux des anges.  Ce que je voulais faire par-dessus tout, maintenant, était de devenir musulman.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je compris que tout appartenait à Dieu.  Qu’Il ne s’assoupit jamais.  Qu’Il a crée absolument tout.  À ce point, je commençai à perdre mon orgueil, car j’avais cru, jusque-là, que seule ma propre grandeur expliquait pourquoi j’étais ici.  Mais je réalisai que je ne m’étais pas créé moi-même et que la finalité de mon existence sur terre était de me soumettre aux enseignements qui avaient trouvé leur plus parfaite expression dans la religion de l’islam.  Je commençai alors à découvrir ma foi.  Je sentis que j’étais musulman.  En lisant le Coran, je compris que tous les prophètes envoyés par Dieu avaient réitéré le même message.  Pourquoi les juifs et les chrétiens étaient-ils différents alors?  Je sais maintenant comment les juifs n’ont pas accepté Jésus comme le Messie et qu’ils ont altéré ses paroles.  Même les chrétiens interprètent mal les mots de Dieu et appellent Jésus le fils de Dieu.  Tout était si clair à présent.  C’est la beauté du Coran; il demande de réfléchir et de raisonner, et de ne pas adorer le soleil ou la lune, mais Celui qui a tout créé.  Le Coran demande aux gens de réfléchir à propos du soleil et de la lune et à propos de la création en général. Réalisez-vous à quel point le soleil est différent de la lune?  Leur distance respective par rapport à la terre est très différente et pourtant, ils paraissent de taille similaire à nos yeux.  Parfois, l’un semble parfaitement recouvrir l’autre.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Même lorsque des astronautes vont dans l’espace, ils voient combien la taille de la terre est insignifiante par rapport à l’étendue de l’espace.  Certains  deviennent très religieux parce qu’ils ont vu les signes de Dieu.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lorsque je lus le Coran un peu plus, je trouvai qu’il parlait de prière, de gentillesse et de charité.  Je n’étais pas encore musulman, mais je sentais que la seule réponse pour moi était le Coran et que Dieu me l’avait envoyé.  Je gardai ce secret pour moi.  Mais le Coran possède plusieurs niveaux de lecture.  Je commençai à le comprendre à un autre niveau, comme lorsqu’il dit :  « Ceux qui croient ne prennent pas les mécréants comme amis et les croyants sont frères. », ou quelque chose en termes similaires.  À ce moment-là, je ressentis le désir de rencontrer mes frères musulmans.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Conversion<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Je décidai ensuite de visiter Jérusalem (comme mon frère l’avait fait).  À Jérusalem, je m’assis à la mosquée.  Un homme me demanda ce que je voulais.  Je lui dis que j’étais musulman.  Il me demanda mon nom.  Je lui dis « Stevens ». Il sembla confus.  Ensuite, je me joignis à la prière, mais pas de la meilleure manière, je dois le dire.  De retour à Londres, je rencontrai une sœur nommée Nafissa.  Je lui dis que je voulais embrasser l’islam et elle me dit de me rendre à la mosquée de New Regent.  C’était en 1977, près d’un an et demi après avoir reçu le Coran.  Maintenant, je réalisai que je devais me débarrasser de mon orgueil, me débarrasser de Satan et me diriger dans une seule et unique direction. Donc, un vendredi après la prière en congrégation, j’allai voir l’imam (celui qui mène la prière) et déclarai devant lui ma foi (Shahaadah).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Vous avez devant vous quelqu’un qui jouissait de la célébrité et de la fortune.  Mais malgré mes efforts, je n’avais jamais été guidé jusqu’à ce qu’on m’offre le Coran.  Maintenant, je réalise que je peux avoir un contact direct avec Dieu, contrairement au christianisme ou à toute autre religion.  Une femme hindoue m’a dit un jour : « Tu ne comprends pas les hindous.  Nous croyons en un seul Dieu; nous utilisons ces objets (idoles) seulement pour nous concentrer. »  Ce qu’elle disait, c’est que dans le but d’atteindre Dieu, on doit Lui créer des associés que sont les idoles.  Mais l’islam nous débarrasse de toutes ces barrières.  La seule chose qui différencie un croyant d’un non-croyant est la Salat (prière).  C’est le processus de purification.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En dernier lieu, je voudrais dire que tout ce que fais, je le fais en recherchant la satisfaction de Dieu, et je prie pour que vous trouviez un peu d’inspiration dans mes propres expériences.  De plus, je voudrais souligner que je n’ai été en contact avec aucun musulman avant d’embrasser l’islam.  J’ai d’abord lu le Coran et ensuite réalisé que personne n’est parfait.  L’islam, lui,  est parfait, et c’est seulement si nous imitons la conduite du prophète Mohammed (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui), que nous pourrons prétendre à la réussite.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Que Dieu puisse nous guider sur le chemin de la nation de Mohammed (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui).  Amine!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Alles, was ich zu sagen habe, wie ihr bereits wisst, ist zu bestätigen, dass die Botschaft des Propheten wie Gott sie ihm übermittelt hat – die Religion der Wahrheit ist.  Als menschliche Wesen wurde uns Bewusstsein und eine Verpflichtung, die uns an die Spitze der Schöpfung gestellt hat...  Es ist wichtig, sich dieser Verpflichtung bewusst zu sein, damit wir uns von allen Illusionen befreien und unsere Leben zu einer Vorbereitung auf das nächste Leben machen.  Jeder, der diese Gelegenheit verpasst, wird höchstwahrscheinlich keine andere mehr bekommen und wieder und wieder zurückgebracht werden, denn im Heiligen Qur´an wird gesagt, dass wenn ein Mann zu seiner Abrechnung gebracht wird, er sagen wird:. \"O Herr, lass uns zurückkehren und gib uns eine andere Chance.  Der Herr wird sagen: ´Wenn Ich euch zurückschicken würde, würdet ihr dasselbe tun.´”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Meine frühe religiöse Erziehung<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Ich wurde in der modernen Welt mit allem Luxus und Highlife des Show-Business aufgezogen.  Ich wurde in einer christlichen Familie geboren, aber wir wissen ja, dass jedes Kind mit der natürlichen Veranlagung geboren wird – es sind nur seine Eltern, die ihn zu dieser oder jener Religion wenden.  Mir wurde diese Religion (das Christentum) gegeben und ich dachte auf diese Weise.  Mir wurde beigebracht, dass Gott existiert, aber es gab keinen direkten Kontakt zu Gott, also mussten wir Kontakt über Jesus herstellen – er war tatsächlich die Tür zu Gott.  Dies hatte ich mehr oder weniger akzeptiert, aber so richtig geschluckt hatte ich es nicht.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich betrachtete manche der Jesusstatuen, es waren  nur Steine, ohne jegliches Leben.  Und wenn sie sagten, dass Gott hier sei, überlegte ich nur noch mehr, aber ich konnte nicht argumentieren.  Ich glaubte mehr oder weniger daran, denn ich musste den Glauben meiner Eltern respektiren.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pop Star<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Allmählich entfernte ich mich von dieser religiösen Erziehung.  Ich begann, Musik zu machen.  Ich wollte ein großer Star werden.  All diese Dinge, die ich in den Filmen und Medien sah, ergriffen von mir Besitz und vielleicht dachte ich, dies sei mein Gott, das Ziel Geld zu machen.  Ich hatte einen Onkel, der ein wunderschönes Auto besaß.  \"Nun\", sagte ich, \"er hat es geschafft.  Er hat viel Geld.\"  Die Menschen um mich herum beeinflussten mich, zu denken, dass es dies war; dieses Wort war ihr Gott.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich entschied dann, das dies das Leben für mich war; das große Geld zu machen, ein ´tolles Leben´ zu führen.  Jetzt waren die Popstars meine Vorbilder.  Ich began, Lieder zu machen, aber tief in mir hatte ich ein Gefühl für Menschlichkeit, ein Gefühl, dass wenn ich reich werden würde, dass würde ich den Bedürftigen helfen.  (Im Qur´an wird gesagt, wir machen ein Versprechen, aber wenn wir etwas Erreichen, wollen wir es halten und werden gierig.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Was also passierte, war, dass ich sehr berühmt wurde.  Ich war noch ein Teenager, mein Name und Foto wurden in allen Medien gezeigt.  Sie machten mich größer als das Leben und so wollte ich mehr als das Leben, und das einzige Mittel hierzu war, sich zu vergiften (mit Schnaps und Drogen).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Im Krankenhaus<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Nach einem Jahr des finanziellen Erfolgs und ´hohen´Lebens, wurde ich sehr krank, zog mir TB zu und wurde ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert.  Es war der Punkt, wo ich begann nachzudenken: Was ging mit mir vor?  War ich nur Körper und mein Ziel bestand darin, meinen Körper zu befriedigen?  Mir wurde klar, dass dieses Unglück eine Gnade meines Gottes für mich war, eine Chance, meine Augen zu öffnen – \"Warum bin ich hier?  Warum bin ich im Bett?\" – und begann nach den Antworten zu suchen.  Zu jener Zeit bestand großes Interesse an der östlichen Mystik.  Ich fing an, zu lesen und das erste, dessen ich mir bewusst wurde, war der Tod und dass die Seele weiterbesteht; sie hat kein Ende.  Ich fühlte, dass ich mich auf dem Weg zum Paradies und einer großen Erfüllung begab.  Ich begann, zu meditieren und wurde sogar Vegetarier.  Ich glaubte jetzt an die \"Peace und Flower Power\" – Bewegung, und das war ja der allgemeine Trend.  Aber was ich insbesondere glaubte, war, dass ich nicht nur aus einem Körper bestand.  Dieses Bewusstsein kam im Krankenhaus zu mir.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eines Tages ging ich spazieren und wurde vom Regen erwischt, ich fing an zu rennen, um mich unterzustellen und dann wurde mir klar; \"Warte eine Minute, mein Körper wird nass, mein Körper sagt mir, ich werde nass.\"  Da musste ich an ein Sprichwort denken, dass der Körper wie ein Esel sei und trainiert werden müsse, wohin er zu gehen habe.  Andersherum wird der Esel dich leiten, wohin er gehen will.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Da wurde mir klar, dass ich einen Willen besaß, ein Geschenk Gottes: dem Willen Gottes zu folgen.  Ich war von der neuen Terminologie, die ich in der östlichen Religion lernte, fasziniert.  Vom Christentum hatte ich schon genug.  Ich begann, wieder Musik zu machen, und dieses Mal fing ich an, meine eigenen Gedanken zu überlegen.  Ich erinnere mich an die Lyrik eines meiner Lieder.  Es geht so: “I wish I knew, I wish I knew what makes the Heaven, what makes the Hell.  Do I get to know You in my bed or some dusty cell while others reach the big hotel?” (Ich möchte wissen, ich möchte wissen, was den Himmel machte, was die Hölle machte.  Werde ich Dich in meinem Bett erkennen oder in irgendeiner staubigen Kammer, während andere das große Hotel erreichen?) - und ich wusste, ich war auf dem Weg.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich schrieb noch ein anderes Lied: “The Way to Find God Out.” (Der Weg, Gott zu finden.)  Ich wurde in der Musikwelt sogar noch berühmter.  Ich hatte wirkliche eine schwierige Zeit, denn ich wurde reich und berühmt, auf zur gleichen Zeit befand ich mich auf der ernsthaften Suche nach der Wahrheit.  Dann erreichte ich ein Stadium, wo ich entschied, dass Buddhismus das Richtige sein muss, aber ich war noch nicht bereit, diese Welt zu verlassen.  Ich hing zu sehr an dieser Welt und war nicht darauf vorbereitet, ein Mönch zu werden und mich von dieser Gesellschaft zurückzuziehen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich probierte Zen und Ching, Tarotkarten und Astrologie.  Ich versuchte, in der Bibel nachzuschlagen und konnte nichts finden.  Zu dieser Zeit wusste ich nichts über den Islam, und dann passierte etwas, das ich für ein Wunder halte.  Mein Bruder hatte die Moschee in Jerusalem besucht und war tief beeindruckt dass sie einerseits vor Leben bebte, (im Gegensatz zu den Kirchen und Synagogen, die leer waren), auf der anderen Seite eine Atmosphäre des Friedens und der Ruhe ausstrahlte.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Der Qur´an<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Als er nach London zurückkehrte, brachte er eine Übersetzung des Qur´an mit, die er mir gab.  Er wurde nicht Muslim, aber er fühlte, da ist irgendetwas in dieser Religion und dachte, mir ginge es vielleicht ebenso. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Und nachdem ich das Buch erhalten hatte, eine Rechtleitung, die mir alles erklärte – wer ich war, welches der Sinn des Lebens war, wie die Wirklichkeit aussieht, und woher ich stamme – mir wurde klar, dass dies die wahre Religion war, Religion -nicht in dem Sinne, wie der Westen sie versteht, nicht die Art nur für eure alten Leute.  Im Westen wird jeder, der eine Religion annehmen möchte und sie zu seiner einzigen Lebensweise macht, für fanatisch erklärt.  Ich war kein Fanatiker; ich war zuerst hin und her gerissen zwischen Körper und Seele.  Dann aber stellte ich fest, dass der Körper und die Seele keineswegs getrennt sind, und dass man sich durchaus nicht in die Berge zurückziehen muss, um religiös zu sein.  Wir müssen den Willen Gottes befolgen, dann können wir höher aufsteigen als die Engel.  Das erste, was ich jetzt tun wollte, war Muslim zu werden. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mir wurde klar, dass alles Gott gehört, dass Ihn kein Schlummer überkommt.  Er hat alles erschaffen.  An diesem Punkt verlor ich meinen Stolz auf mich, denn bis hierher hatte ich gedacht, ich wäre aufgrund meiner eigenen Großartigkeit hier.  Aber ich erkannte, dass ich mich nicht selbst erschaffen hatte, und dass der ganze Sinn meines Daseins hier darin bestand, mich den Lehren zu unterwerfen, die in der Religion, die wir als Al-Islam kennen, ihre Vervollkommenung erfahren hatten.  Jetzt begann ich, meinen Glauben zu entdecken.  Ich fühlte mich als Muslim.  Beim Lesen des Qur´an stellte ich fest, dass alle Propheten, die Gott geschickt hat, dieselbe Botschaft überbrachten.  Warum sind dann die Juden und die Christen unterschiedlich?  Heute weiß ich, dass die Juden Christus nicht als den Messias akzeptiert haben, und dass sie sein Wort verändert haben.    Sogar die Christen missverstanden Gottes Wort und nannten Jesus den Sohn Gottes.  Alles bekam einen Sinn.  Dies ist die Schönheit des Qur´an; er fordert dich auf, zu überlegen und nachzudenken, und nicht die Sonne und den Mond anzubeten, sondern Den Einen, Der alles erschaffen hat.  Der Qur´an weist den Menschen an, über Sonne und Mond nachzudenken und über Gottes Schöpfung allgemein.  Erkennst du, wie sich die Sonne und der Mond unterscheiden?  Sie haben unterschiedliche Abstände zur Erde, aber sie scheinen uns doch gleich groß zu sein; manchmal scheinen sie einander zu überlappen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Auch wenn viele Astronauten ins All fahren, sehen sie die bedeutende Größe der Erde und die Ausdehnung des Weltalls.  Sie werden sehr religiös, weil sie die Zeichen Gottes gesehen haben. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Als ich weiter im Qur´an las, sprach er über Gebet, Freundlichkeit und Almosen.  Noch war ich kein Muslim, aber ich fühlte, das die einzige Antwort für mich der Qur´an war und dass Gott ihn mir gesandt hat und ich bewahrte ihn als Geheimnis.  Aber der Qur´an spricht auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen.  Ich fing an, ihn auch auf einer anderen Ebene zu verstehen, wo der Qur´an sagt:.  \"O die ihr Glaubt, nehmt euch nicht die Ungläubigen zu Freunden und die Gläubigen sind Brüder.\"  Da, an diesem Punkt wünschte ich mir, meine muslimischen Brüder zu treffen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Konvertierung   <\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Dann enschloss ich mich, nach Jerusalem zu reisen (wie es mein Bruder getan hatte).  In Jerusalem ging ich in die Moschee und setzte mich.  Ein Mann fragte, was ich wolle, ich erzählte ihm, ich sei Muslim.  Er fragte nach meinem Namen.  Ich sagte: \"Stevens.\"  Er war verwirrt.  Dann nahm ich am Gebet teil, wenn auch nicht so erfolgreich.  Zurück in London traf ich eine Schwester namens Nafisa.  Ich teilte ihr mit, dass ich den Islam annehmen möchte und sie führten mich zur New Regent Moschee.  Das war 1977, ungefähr eineinhalb Jahre nachdem ich den Qur´an erhalten hatte.  Jetzt wurde mir bewusst, dass ich meinen Stolz ablegen, Satan loswerden  und eine Richtung ins Auge fassen musste.  Am Freitag nach dem Gemeinschaftsgebet ging ich daher zu dem Imam (Gebetsführer) und erklärte meinen Glauben (Schahaadah).  Du siehst hier jemanden, der vorher Berühmtheit und Glück erreicht hatte.  Aber die Rechtleitung war etwas, das sich mir entzogen hatte, egal wie sehr ich mich anstrengte, bis mir der Qur´an gezeigt wurde. Jetzt sah ich, dass ich in direkten Kontakt mit Gott treten kann, nicht wie im Christentum oder irgendeiner anderen Religion.  Wie mir eine hinduistische Dame erklärte: \"Sie verstehen die Hindus nicht.  Wir glauben an einen Gott; wir benutzen diese Objekte (Götzen) lediglich, um uns zu konzentrieren.\"  Was sie damit sagen wollte, war dass man um Gott zu erreichen, Teilhaber schaffen müsse, die dann nur Götzen für diesen Zweck seien.  Aber der Islam durchbricht diese Grenzen.  Das einzige, das den Gläubigen von einem Ungläubigen unterscheidet, ist das Salat<\/em> (Gebet).  Dies ist der Vorgang der Reinigung. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abschließend möchte ich sagen, dass alles, was ich tue, der Zufriedenheit Gottes gewidmet ist und ich bete, dass ihr ein paar Anregungen von meinen Erfahrungen erhalten mögt.  Darüber hinaus möchte ich betonen, dass ich keinen Kontakt zu irgendeinem Muslim hatte, bevor ich den Islam angenommen habe.  Ich habe zuerst den Qur´an gelesen und festgestellt, dass niemand vollkommen ist.  Der Islam ist vollkommen und wenn wir das Verhalten des Propheten nachahmen, werden wir erfolgreich sein.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Möge Gott uns dazu leiten, den Weg der Gemeinschaft Muhammads, Gottes Heil und Frieden seien mit ihm, zu folgen.  Amien!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tudo que eu tenho a dizer é tudo que vocês já sabem, para confirmar o que vocês já sabem, a mensagem do Profeta [que Deus o exalte] como concedida por Deus – a Religião da Verdade.  Como seres humanos nós recebemos uma consciência e um dever que nos coloca no topo da criação... É importante entender a obrigação para nos livrarmos de todas as ilusões e fazer de nossas vidas uma preparação para a próxima vida.  Qualquer um que perde essa chance não terá outra, e não será trazido de novo e de novo, porque é dito no Glorioso Alcorão que quando um homem for prestar contas, ele dirá, “Ó Senhor, nos envie de volta e nos dê uma outra chance.    O Senhor dirá, ‘Se eu o enviar de volta você fará o mesmo.’”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Minha Educação Religiosa<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Eu fui educado no mundo moderno e luxuoso do show business.  Eu nasci em um lar cristão, mas nós sabemos que toda criança nasce em sua natureza original – são seus pais que a levam para essa ou aquela religião.  Eu recebi esta religião (Cristianismo) e pensava dessa forma.  Eu fui ensinado que Deus existe, mas não havia contato direto com Deus, de modo que nós tínhamos que fazer o contato com Ele através de Jesus – ele era de fato a porta para Deus.  Isso era mais ou menos aceito por mim, mas eu não engolia completamente.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eu vi algumas estátuas de Jesus; elas eram apenas pedras sem vida.  E quando eles diziam que Deus é três, eu ficava ainda mais confuso mas não podia argumentar.  Eu acreditava parcialmente nisso, porque eu tinha que respeitar a fé dos meus pais.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pop Star<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Gradualmente eu me alienei dessa educação religiosa.  Eu comecei a fazer música.  Eu queria ser uma grande estrela.  Todas aquelas coisas que eu via nos filmes e na mídia tomaram conta de mim e, talvez, eu tenha pensado que o objetivo de ganhar dinheiro fosse o meu Deus.  Eu tinha um tio que tinha um bonito carro.  “Bem, eu disse, “ele conseguiu.  Ele tem muito dinheiro.”  As pessoas ao meu redor me influenciaram a pensar que isso era tudo; este mundo era seu Deus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eu então decidi que essa era a vida para mim; ganhar muito dinheiro, ter uma ‘grande vida.’  Os meus exemplos eram os pop stars.  Eu comecei a fazer canções, mas no fundo eu tinha um sentimento por humanidade, um sentimento de que se eu ficasse rico eu ajudaria os necessitados. (É dito no Alcorão que nós fazemos uma promessa, mas quando conseguimos algo nós nos apegamos e nos tornamos gananciosos).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

O que aconteceu foi que eu fiquei muito famoso.  Eu ainda era um adolescente e meu nome e foto foram espalhados em toda a mídia.  Eles me fizeram maior que a vida, e eu queria viver mais que a vida, e o único caminho de fazer isso era me drogando (com bebidas e drogas).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

No Hospital<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Após um ano de sucesso financeiro e vida ‘alta’, eu fiquei muito doente, contraí tuberculose e tive que ser hospitalizado.  Foi então que eu comecei a pensar: o que aconteceu comigo?  Eu era apenas um corpo, e meu objetivo na vida era meramente satisfazer este corpo?  Eu percebi que esta calamidade foi uma bênção que Deus me concedeu, uma chance de abrir os meus olhos – “Por que eu estou aqui?  Por que eu estou na cama?”  - e comecei a procurar por algumas das respostas.  Naquela época havia um grande interesse no misticismo oriental.  Eu comecei a ler, e a primeira coisa que me chamou a atenção foi a morte, e que a alma continua; não pára.  Eu senti que estava no caminho para a bênção e realização.  Eu comecei a meditar e até me tornei vegetariano.  Eu acreditava no ‘poder da paz e da flor’, e essa era a tendência geral.  Mas o que eu acreditava em particular era que eu não era apenas um corpo.  Essa consciência veio a mim no hospital.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Um dia quando eu estava caminhando, eu fui pego pela chuva, e comecei a correr para um abrigo e então eu percebi, ‘Espere um minuto, o meu corpo está se molhando, o meu corpo está me dizendo que eu estou me molhando.’  Isso me fez pensar em um ditado que diz que o corpo é como um jumento, e ele tem que ser treinado para onde ir.  De outra forma, o jumento o levará onde ele quer ir.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Então eu percebi que tinha uma vontade, um dom concedido por Deus: seguir a vontade de Deus.  Eu estava fascinado pela nova terminologia que estava aprendendo na religião oriental.  Por essa época, eu não agüentava mais o Cristianismo.  Eu comecei a fazer música novamente, e dessa vez eu comecei a refletir meus próprios pensamentos.  Eu lembro da letra de uma de minhas canções.  É assim: “Eu queria saber, eu queria saber o que faz o Paraíso, o que faz o Inferno.  Eu Te conheço em minha cama ou alguma pequena célula enquanto outros chegam ao grande hotel?\"  e eu sabia que estava no Caminho.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eu também escrevi outra canção, “The Way to Find God Out” (O Caminho para Descobrir Deus<\/em>)).  Eu me tornei ainda mais famoso no mundo da música.  Eu realmente estava passando por tempos difíceis porque eu estava ficando rico e famoso e, ao mesmo tempo, eu estava sinceramente buscando a Verdade.   Então eu cheguei a um estágio onde eu decidi que o Budismo era elevado e nobre, mas eu não estava pronto para deixar o mundo.  Eu estava muito apegado ao mundo e não estava preparado para me tornar um monge e me isolar da sociedade.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eu tentei Zen e Ching, numerologia, cartas de tarô e astrologia.  Eu tentei procurar novamente na Bíblia e não pude encontrar nada.  Nesse momento eu não sabia nada sobre o Islã e, então, o que eu considero um milagre aconteceu.  Meu irmão tinha visitado uma mesquita em Jerusalém e ficou muito impressionado de, por um lado, ela estar cheia de vida (ao contrário das igrejas e sinagogas que estavam vazias) e, por outro lado, prevalecer uma atmosfera de paz e tranqüilidade.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

O Alcorão<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Quando ele veio a Londres, ele trouxe uma tradução do Alcorão, que me deu.  Ele não se tornou muçulmano, mas sentiu algo nesta religião, e pensou que eu pudesse encontrar algo nela também.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando eu recebi o livro, uma orientação que explicava tudo para mim – quem eu era; qual era o propósito da vida; qual era a realidade e qual seria a realidade; e de onde eu vim – eu percebi que esta era a religião verdadeira; religião não no sentido como o Ocidente entende, não o tipo para quando você ficar velho.  No Ocidente, quem quer que deseje abraçar uma religião e fazer dela seu único modo de vida é considerado um fanático.  Eu não era um fanático; eu inicialmente estava confuso entre o corpo e a alma.  Então eu percebi que o corpo e a alma não estão separados e você não tem que ir para a montanha para ser religioso.  Nós devemos seguir a vontade de Deus.  Então nós podemos nos elevar mais que os anjos.  A primeira coisa que eu queria fazer era ser um muçulmano.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eu percebi que tudo pertence a Deus, que o sono não O domina.  Ele criou tudo.  Nesse ponto eu comecei a perder o meu orgulho, porque até então eu achava que a razão de eu estar aqui era por causa de minha própria grandeza.  Mas eu percebi que eu não criei a mim mesmo, e que todo o propósito do meu ser aqui era se submeter aos ensinamentos que foram aperfeiçoados pela religião que conhecemos como Islã.  Nesse ponto eu comecei a descobrir a minha fé.  Eu senti que era um muçulmano.  Ao ler o Alcorão, eu percebia que todos os Profetas enviados por Deus trouxeram a mesma mensagem.  Por que então os judeus e cristãos eram diferentes?  Eu sei agora como os judeus não aceitaram Jesus como o Messias, e que eles mudaram a Palavra de Deus.  Até mesmo os cristãos não compreenderam a Palavra de Deus e chamaram Jesus de filho de Deus.  Tudo fazia muito sentido.  Esta é a beleza do Alcorão; ele pede a você para refletir e usar a razão, e não para adorar o sol ou a lua, mas Aquele que criou tudo.  O Alcorão pede ao homem que reflita sobre o sol e a lua e a criação de Deus em geral.  Você percebe o quanto o sol é diferente da lua?  Eles estão a distâncias diferentes da terra, e ainda assim parecem do mesmo tamanho para nós; às vezes, parece que um se sobrepõe ao outro.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando muitos dos astronautas vão para o espaço, eles vêem o tamanho insignificante da terra e a vastidão do espaço.  Eles se tornam muito religiosos, porque eles vêem os Sinais de Deus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando eu prossegui na leitura do Alcorão, vi ele falava sobre oração, gentileza e caridade.   Eu não era um muçulmano ainda, mas eu sentia que a única resposta para mim era o Alcorão, e que Deus o tinha enviado para mim, mas eu mantive isso em segredo.  Mas o Alcorão também fala em níveis diferentes.  Eu comecei a compreendê-lo em outro nível, onde o Alcorão diz, “Aqueles que crêem não adotam os descrentes como amigos e os crentes são irmãos.”  Neste ponto eu quis encontrar meus irmãos muçulmanos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Conversão<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Então eu decidi fazer uma viagem para Jerusalém (como meu irmão havia feito).  Em Jerusalém eu fui à mesquita e sentei.  Um homem me perguntou o que eu queria.  Eu disse a ele que eu era um muçulmano.  Ele perguntou qual era o meu nome.  Eu disse a ele, “Stevens.”  Ele estava confuso.  Eu então me juntei à oração, embora não de forma bem-sucedida.  De volta a Londres, eu encontrei uma irmã chamada Nafisa.  Eu disse a ela que queria abraçar o Islã e ela me orientou a ir à mesquita New Regent.  Isso foi em 1977, aproximadamente um ano e meio depois de eu ter recebido o Alcorão.  Eu percebi que eu tinha que me livrar do meu orgulho, de Satanás, e me voltar para uma direção.  Então numa sexta-feira, após o serviço da oração congregacional, eu me dirigi ao Imame e declarei a minha fé (a Shahadah).  Você tem diante de si alguém que alcançou fama e fortuna.  Mas a orientação foi algo que me fugia à compreensão, não importa o quanto eu tentasse, até que me foi mostrado o Alcorão.  Eu percebi que eu podia ter contato direto com Deus, ao contrário de no Cristianismo ou qualquer outra religião.  Como uma senhora hindu me disse, “Você não entende os hindus.  Nós acreditamos em um Deus; nós usamos esses objetos (ídolos) simplesmente para nos concentrarmos.”  O que ela estava dizendo é que de modo a alcançar Deus, alguém tem que criar associados, que são ídolos para o propósito.  Mas o Islã remove todas essas barreiras.  A única coisa que separa os crentes dos descrentes é o salat (oração).  Esse é o processo de purificação.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Por fim, eu queria dizer que tudo que eu faço é para a satisfazer a Deus e eu oro a Deus que você obtenha alguma inspiração a partir das minhas experiências.  Além disso, eu gostaria de enfatizar que eu não entrei em contato com qualquer muçulmano antes de abraçar o Islã.  Eu li o Alcorão primeiro e percebi que nenhuma pessoa é perfeita.  O Islã é perfeito, e se nós imitarmos a conduta do Profeta nós seremos bem-sucedidos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Que Deus nós dê orientação para seguir o caminho da nação de Muhammad, que Deus o exalte.  Amém!<\/span><\/p>\r\n
