Why did I become Muslim?  I can clearly remember the day I officially converted at Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, I came right from the state of Connecticut (US), but what lead up to that day remains as a somewhat subconscious, yet continuous quest for God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As a child, I was always sure of religion and God, but never in the way it was presented in Catholicism.  I could never grasp how God could be three (with the Trinity), how we could pray to many people such as Jesus (peace be upon him), Mary and assorted saints, the concept of original sin, how priests could just “forgive” your sins, or why there were hundreds of completely different bibles.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Consequently, these are just a few of the things that anyone, including priests, could ever address or even explain.  It was amazing that I went to church and religious education but came out without knowing exactly what I should be doing to be a good Christian.  I learned I was supposed to be “good,” “giving,” “caring,” “merciful,” and many other desirable traits, but there was never any practical application for how I should go about doing that.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Without knowing it then, I was searching for a way to connect with the One God I knew and always prayed to, as well as a structure from God that would teach me exactly how I should be carrying out my life.  But life went on, and with pressure from my family and objection from me, I went through the initiations into the Catholic Church.  Up until college, religion was nothing more to me than a bother on Sunday mornings.  God though, was still present.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I happened to go to a Catholic college and thought I would give Catholicism one last chance.  I wanted so desperately to reach God.  I tried my best once again to find my way through the only means I knew possible and it did not work.  I finally renounced Catholicism, so that meant it was time to explore other options.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Catholicism and Christian denominations were out because of my previous troubles with them and so was Judaism because of its disbelief in Jesus.  Although I had issues with Christianity, I was always sure Jesus had a powerful message to humankind — the message of worshiping one God.  I could never understand how Christians ended up worshiping Jesus himself.  I felt sure that he would have never wanted that.  This left me with one more option — Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I happened to be familiar with Islam through previous travels in Egypt, so I was open to the possibility of this faith.  It was not alien to me, although at the time I did not know any Muslims other than a friend or two in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I began reading the Quran and searching for information on Islam through the Internet.  I remember my first feeling about the Quran was that I knew instinctively it could never have been written by a human hand; it was simply beyond that.  This was in sharp contrast to my reading of the Bible, which seemed like just a collection of stories written by a man.  This love of the Quran’s words and the fact that there was and is just one, unchanged Quran since its revelation to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, was not the only thing that impressed me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I felt good about everything I learned about Islam.  This feeling meant a lot, so I kept digging, learning, and liking.  Most importantly, I found answers to my two main religious issues of the past (only wanting to worship one God and structure).  Islam is strictly monotheistic in that Muslims worship of God alone without any partners, and the Quran and Sunnah (the sayings and actions of the Prophet [may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him]) give a complete way of life to follow.  I finally knew exactly what I had to do to be a good Christian, I had to become a Muslim!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During the last two years of college, I held the beliefs of Islam, not really sure what to do with them in a Catholic college environment.  I knew in my heart that I was Muslim, but I did not know how to break that news to family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After college, I was offered an internship in Egypt and happily returned.  I made many good Muslim friends, including my husband-to-be, who helped me officially convert and learn so many things that are important in the religion.  I was lucky to have all the wonderful support I received.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It was not easy telling people that I was Muslim.  Although some people were glad I found a religion I loved, I have not always received congratulations or even polite responses, but I have become strong because of it.  I can defend my faith and I thank God every day that I am Muslim.  I remember growing up confused about God and religion.  I finally feel complacent and simply happy each day that goes by because I now understand the truth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

¿Por qué  me hice musulmana? Puedo recordar con claridad el día en que me convertí oficialmente en la mezquita Al-Azhar en El Cairo, a donde llegué proveniente del estado de Connecticut (Estados Unidos), pero lo que me llevó hasta allí aún sigue siendo una búsqueda un tanto inconsciente, aunque continua, de Dios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando era niña, estuve siempre segura de la religión y de Dios, pero nunca en la forma en que eran presentados en el catolicismo. Nunca pude entender cómo Dios podía ser tres (con la Trinidad), cómo podemos rezarle a tantas personas como a Jesús (la paz sea con él), María y los diferentes santos, el concepto de pecado original, cómo los sacerdotes pueden “perdonar” nuestros pecados, o por qué hay biblias que varían entre sí.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En consecuencia, estas son sólo algunas de las cosas que nadie, ni siquiera los sacerdotes, podían enfrentar ni explicar. Era increíble que yo fuera a la iglesia y recibiera educación religiosa, pero no supiera exactamente qué debía hacer para ser una buena cristiana. Aprendí que se suponía que debía ser “buena”, “generosa”, “consciente”, “clemente”, y muchos otros rasgos deseables, pero nunca hubo ninguna aplicación práctica sobre cómo podía cumplir con todo ello.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sin saberlo entonces, estaba buscando una forma de conectarme con el Único Dios que conocía y al que siempre le había orado, así como una estructura proveniente de Dios que me enseñara cómo debía manejar exactamente mi vida. Pero la vida siguió, y con la presión de mi familia y la objeción de mi parte, continué cumpliendo los sacramentos de la Iglesia Católica. Hasta la universidad, la religión no era para mí más que una molestia en las mañanas dominicales. Dios, sin embargo, todavía estaba presente.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Se me ocurrió entrar en una universidad católica y pensé así darle al catolicismo una última oportunidad. Deseaba desesperadamente alcanzar a Dios. Hice mi mayor esfuerzo una vez más para hallar mi camino a través de los únicos medios posibles que conocía, y no funcionó. Finalmente, renuncié al catolicismo, lo que significaba que era hora de explorar otras opciones.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Las denominaciones católicas y cristianas estaban fuera de consideración debido a mis problemas anteriores con ellas, y lo mismo el judaísmo debido a que no acepta la creencia en Jesús. A pesar de que tenía problemas con el cristianismo, siempre tuve la certeza de que Jesús tenía un mensaje poderoso para la humanidad, el mensaje de adorar al Dios Único. Nunca pude entender cómo los cristianos terminaron adorando al propio Jesús. Estaba segura de que él nunca quiso tal cosa. Esto me dejó con una opción: el Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Resulta que estaba familiarizada con el Islam gracias a viajes anteriores que había hecho a Egipto, de modo que estaba abierta a la posibilidad de esta fe. No era algo ajeno a mí, aunque en ese momento yo no conocía más musulmanes que uno o dos amigos en Egipto.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Comencé a leer el Corán y a buscar información sobre el Islam en Internet. Recuerdo que mi primera sensación respecto al Corán fue que yo sabía instintivamente que no podía haber sido escrito jamás por un ser humano; simplemente estaba más allá de ello. Esto estaba en marcado contraste con mi lectura de la Biblia, que siempre me pareció una simple colección de historias escritas por hombres. Este amor por las palabras del Corán y el hecho de que no había más que un Corán inalterado, que no había cambiado desde su revelación al Profeta Muhammad, que la misericordia y las bendiciones de Dios sean con él, no fue lo único que me impresionó.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Me sentí bien respecto a todo lo que aprendía sobre el Islam. Este sentimiento significaba mucho, así que seguí hurgando, aprendiendo y disfrutando. Más importante aún, encontré respuestas a mis dos temas religiosos principales del pasado (sólo buscaba adorar a Dios y una estructura). El Islam es estrictamente monoteísta, ya que los musulmanes adoran sólo a Dios sin ningún asociado, y el Corán y la Sunnah (los dichos y obras del Profeta, que la misericordia y las bendiciones de Dios sean con él) brindan una forma de vida completa a seguir. Finalmente sabía exactamente qué debía hacer para ser una buena cristiana, ¡tenía que hacerme musulmana!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante los dos últimos años de mis estudios, mantuve las creencias del Islam, sin saber muy bien qué hacer con ellas en el ambiente de una universidad católica. Sabía en mi corazón que era musulmana, pero no sabía cómo darles la noticia a mi familia y a mis amigos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Después de la universidad, se me ofreció un internado en Egipto y regresé allí feliz. Hice muchos buenos amigos musulmanes, incluyendo al que se convertiría en mi esposo, quien me ayudó a convertirme oficialmente y a aprender muchas cosas que son importantes en la religión. Tuve suerte de tener todo el maravilloso apoyo que recibí.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

No fue fácil decirle a la gente que era musulmana. Si bien algunas personas se alegran de que haya encontrado una religión que amo, no siempre recibo felicitaciones ni respuestas cordiales, pero esto me ha fortalecido. Puedo defender mi fe y agradezco a Dios todos los días por ser musulmana. Recuerdo haber crecido confundida respecto a Dios y la religión. Finalmente me siento satisfecha y simplemente soy feliz cada día que pasa, porque ahora entiendo la verdad.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Warum bin ich Muslim geworden? Ich kann mich deutlich an den Tag erinnern, an dem ich offiziell in der Al-Azhar Moschee in Kairo konvertiert bin.  Ich kam direkt aus dem Staat Connecticut (US), aber was zu diesem Tag geführt hatte, bleibt immer irgendwie unterbewusst, aber es gab die ständige Frage nach Gott. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Als Kind war ich mir der Religion und Gottes immer sicher, aber nie auf die Art und Weise, wie der Katholizismus sie präsentierte.  Ich konnte nie begreifen, wie Gott drei sein konnte (Dreifaltigkeit), wie wir zu so vielen Menschen beten konnten, wie Jesus (Friede sei mit ihm), Maria und ausgewählten Heiligen, die Vorstellung von der Erbsünde, wie Priester einfach so deine Sünden „vergeben“ können oder warum es hunderte völlig verschiedener Bibeln geben konnte.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Das waren nur einige Dinge, die mir niemand – Priester eingeschlossen – erklären konnte.  Es war erstaunlich, dass ich zur Kirche ging und zur Religionserziehung, aber wieder hinauskam, ohne genau zu wissen, was ich tun sollte, um ein guter Christ zu sein.  Ich lernte, dass von mir erwartet wurde, „gut“, „großzügig“, „sorgend“, „gnädig“ zu sein und viele anderen wünschenswerten Charakterzüge, aber es gab nie irgendeine praktische Anwendung dafür, wie man vorgehen sollte, um so zu sein. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ohne es damals zu wissen, suchte ich nach einem Weg, mich mit dem Einen Gott, den ich kannte und zu Dem ich immer betete, in Verbindung zu setzen, ebenso wie eine Struktur von Gott mich genau lehrte, wie ich mein Leben führen sollte.  Aber das Leben ging weiter und mit dem Druck von meiner Familie und Einwänden meinerseits durchlief ich die Einweihungen in die katholische Kirche.  Bis zum Kollege war Religion für mich nicht mehr als eine Belastung am Sonntagmorgen.  Gott aber war immer noch anwesend.   <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Es kam so, dass ich zu einem katholischen Kollege ging, und ich dachte, ich gebe dem Katholizismus eine letzte Chance.  Ich wollte so verzweifelt Gott erreichen.  Ich versuchte mein Bestes, um mit den einzigen mir bekannten Mitteln meinen Weg zu finden, und es funktionierte nicht.  Schliesslich gab ich den Katholizismus auf, das bedeutet, es war Zeit für mich, andere Alternativen zu erforschen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Katholizismus und andere christliche Konfessionen kamen aufgrund meiner früheren Schwierigkeiten mit ihnen nicht in Frage und ebenso das Judentum, wegen seines Verleugnen Jesus.  Obwohl ich Schwierigkeiten mit dem Christentum hatte, war ich mir immer sicher gewesen, dass Jesus eine kraftvolle Botschaft für die Menschheit gehabt hatte – die Botschaft, dem Einen Gott zu dienen.  Ich konnte nie verstehen, wieso die Christen Jesus selbst anbeteten.  Ich fühlte mich sicher, dass er das nie gewollt hat.  Dies ließ mir eine Alternative – Islam. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich kannte den Islam ein wenig von vorangegangenen Reisen nach Ägypten, also war ich dieser Möglichkeit des Glaubens gegenüber offen.  Es war nichts Fremdes für mich, obwohl ich zu jener Zeit keine Muslime kannte, außer einem oder zwei Freunden in Ägypten. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich fing an, den Qur´an zu lesen und im Internet nach Informationen über den Islam zu suchen.  Ich erinnere mich an mein erstes Gefühl über den Qur´an: es war, dass ich instinktiv wusste, dass dieses Buch niemals von Menschenhand geschrieben worden sein konnte; es stand einfach über allem.  Dies stand in scharfem Kontrast zu meinem Lesen der Bibel, die nur wie eine Sammlumg von Menschen geschriebenen Geschichten erscheint.  Diese Liebe zu den Worten des Qur´an und die Tatsache, dass es nur einen, unveränderten Qur´an seit der Offenbarung zum Propheten Muhammad, Gottes Segen und Frieden seien mit ihm, gibt, war nicht das einzige, das mich beeindruckte.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich hatte bei allem, was ich über den Islam lernte, ein gutes Gefühl.  Dieses Gefühl bedeutete eine Menge, also beschäftigte ich mich weiter mit ausgraben, lernen und mögen.  Das wichtigste an allem war, ich fand Antworten auf meine beiden religiösen Hauptfragen der Vergangenheit (ich wollte nur den Einen Gott anbeten).  Der Islam ist streng monotheistisch, so dass Muslime nur Gott allein anbeten, ohne Teilhaber, und der Qur´an und die Sunna (die Aussagen und Taten des Propheten) geben eine vollständige Lebensweise, der man folgen kann.  Ich wußte schließlich genau, was ich zu tun hatte, um ein guter Christ zu werden: Muslim werden! <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Während der letzten beiden Jahre auf dem Kollege glaubte ich an den Islam, ich war mir nicht so recht sicher, wie ich in einer katholischen Kollegeumgebung damit umgehen sollte.  Ich wusste in meinem Herzen, dass ich Muslim war, aber ich wusste nicht, wie ich meinen Eltern und meinen Freunden diese Neuigkeiten mitteilen sollte. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Nach dem Kollege wurde mir eine Stellung in Ägypten angeboten, und ich kehrte überglücklich zurück.  Ich fand viele muslimische Freunde, einschließlich meinem zukünftigen Ehemann, der mir dabei behilflich war, offiziell zu konvertieren und mich so viele wichtige Dinge in der Religion lehrte.  Ich war glücklich über all die wunderbare Unterstützung, die ich erhielt. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Por que me tornei muçulmana?<\/span>  <\/span>Posso lembrar muito claramente do dia em que oficialmente me converti na mesquita de Al-Azhar no Cairo. Sou do estado de Connecticut (EUA), mas o que me levou até aquele dia permanece como uma busca inconsciente e ainda assim contínua por Deus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando criança sempre tive certeza da religião e de Deus,  mas nunca na forma em que o Catolicismo foi-me apresentado.  Nunca consegui entender como Deus podia ser três (com a Trindade), orar para muitas pessoas como Jesus (que a paz esteja sobre ele), Maria e vários santos, o conceito de pecado original, como os padres podiam simplesmente \"perdoar\" os pecados ou por que havia centenas de Bíblias completamente diferentes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Consequentemente, essas eram apenas umas das poucas coisas que ninguém, inclusive padres, podia abordar ou até mesmo explicar.  Era surpreendente que ia à igreja e a educação religiosa acabava, mas saía sem saber exatamente o que devia fazer para ser uma boa cristã.  Aprendi que devia ser “boa”, “caridosa”, “cuidadosa”, “ter misericórdia” e muitas outras características desejáveis, mas não havia qualquer aplicação prática de como eu devia fazer isso.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Buscava por uma forma de me conectar com o Deus Único que conhecia e para O qual orava, e também por uma estrutura de Deus que me ensinasse como exatamente devia levar minha vida.  <\/span>Mas a vida seguiu em frente e com a pressão de minha família e minha objeção, dei prosseguimento à iniciação na igreja católica.<\/span>  <\/span>Até a universidade a religião não era mais que um incômodo nas manhãs de domingo.<\/span>  Deus, entretanto, continuava presente.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Aconteceu de eu ir para uma universidade católica e pensei em dar ao Catolicismo uma última chance.  Queria desesperadamente alcançar Deus.  <\/span>Tentei ao máximo mais uma vez encontrar uma forma através dos únicos meios que sabia serem possíveis e não funcionou.<\/span>  Finalmente renunciei ao Catolicismo, o que significava que era hora de explorar outras opções.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

O Catolicismo e denominações cristãs estavam fora por causa de meus problemas anteriores com eles e também o Judaísmo, por sua descrença em Jesus.  Embora tivesse problemas com o Cristianismo, sempre tive certeza de que Jesus tinha uma mensagem poderosa para a humanidade – a mensagem de adorar a um único Deus.  Nunca entendi como os cristãos acabaram adorando o próprio Jesus.  Tinha certeza de que ele nunca quis isso.  Fiquei com mais uma opção – o Islã.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Estava familiarizada com o Islã através de viagens anteriores ao Egito e estava aberta para a possibilidade dessa crença.  Não era estranha para mim, embora na época não conhecesse muçulmanos além de um amigo ou dois no Egito.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Comecei a ler o Alcorão e a buscar informação sobre o Islã na internet.  Lembro que meu primeiro sentimento sobre o Alcorão foi que sabia instintivamente que não podia ter sido escrito por uma mão humana; estava além disso.  <\/span>Estava em franco contraste com minha leitura da Bíblica, que parecia uma coleção de histórias escritas por um homem.<\/span>  Esse amor pelas palavras do Alcorão e o fato de ser somente um e inalterado Alcorão desde sua revelação para o profeta Muhammad, que a misericórdia e bênçãos de Deus estejam sobre ele, não foram as únicas coisas que me impressionaram.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sentia-me bem em relação a tudo que aprendia sobre o Islã.  Esse sentimento significava muito e continuei a pesquisar, aprender e a gostar.  Mais importante, encontrei respostas para meus dois problemas religiosos do passado (querer adorar um Deus e a estrutura).  O Islã é estritamente monoteísta porque os muçulmanos adoram somente Deus sem quaisquer parceiros; e o Alcorão e a Sunnah (os ditos e ações do profeta [que a misericórdia e bênçãos de Deus estejam sobre ele]) dão um sistema de vida completo de vida a seguir.  Finalmente sabia exatamente o que tinha que fazer para ser uma boa cristã: tinha que me tornar muçulmana!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante os dois últimos anos de universidade mantive as crenças do Islã, não muito certa do que fazer com elas em um ambiente universitário católico.  Sabia em meu coração que era muçulmana, mas não sabia como dar a notícia à minha família e amigos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Depois da universidade recebi uma oferta de estágio no Egito e retornei alegremente.  Fiz muitos bons amigos muçulmanos, inclusive meu futuro marido, que me ajudou a me converter oficialmente e aprendi muitas coisas que são importantes na religião.  Tive sorte por todo o apoio maravilhoso que recebi.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Não foi fácil dizer às pessoas que era muçulmana.  Embora algumas pessoas tenham ficado felizes por eu ter encontrado uma religião que amo, nem sempre recebo congratulações ou mesmo respostas educadas, mas fiquei mais forte por causa disso.  Posso defender minha fé e agradeço a Deus todos os dias por ser muçulmana.  Lembro-me de ter crescido confusa sobre Deus e religião.  Finalmente sinto-me complacente e feliz a cada dia que passa, porque agora entendo a verdade.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
