My Muslim Husband<\/span><\/h1>\r\n

It’s been 12 years since I married my Muslim husband and the road has truly been long and winding, but happy.  At the time we got married I was Catholic and had no intention of converting to Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My new husband was very understanding and only asked that I at least try to read an English translation of the Quran from time to time.  I agreed.  We soon moved to Kuwait as the U.S.  economy was so weak at that time and it was impossible to earn a good living.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The minute I stepped off the plane I was thrust into a whole new world that was full of Islam, Muslims, cultural traditions and a whole new way of thinking.  To say that I was shaken to my very core, in blind terror, is an understatement.  All I wanted to do was to jump right back on that plane and fly away from this strange new World.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet through it all, my Muslim husband was by my side every step of the way.  When I found that his mother’s cooking was too spicy, he made sure that other food choices were available, including American gourmet items like McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When I was homesick for my family in the US, he stayed up with me all night consoling me and offering to take me “home”.  Through every happy moment, every illness and on the days when I was so sad I could barely summon a smile, my Muslim husband has been right there holding my hand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My husband turned into my teacher as he taught me all about Islam, fasting and the Islamic prayer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He is my best friend, confidant, and the father of my children.  He equally shares in changing dirty diapers, spill patrol and nipping temper tantrums in the bud.  Nothing fazes him, not even kids throwing up on his brand new shirt or his having to wash the dishes when I am too tired to move.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It’s unfortunate that Muslim husbands, especially, get such a bad rap in the Western media.  Quite often Muslim husbands are portrayed as control freaks who force their wives to wear “Islamic garb”.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The reality is that both Muslim husbands and wives often choose to follow an Islamic code of dress because it is ordained in the Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.  It is not an issue of force or a war of wills.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God Almighty says in the Quran what means:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: That will make for greater purity for them: And God is well acquainted with all that they do.  And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty.  That they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof.” (Quran 24:30)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

For me, personally, I came to Kuwait wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans.  I wore what I choose and neither my Muslim husband nor his Muslim family said anything to me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, my husband did continue to ask me to read the Quran.  His gentle, and sometimes nagging, reminders paid off.  I finally started reading the Quran and my hunger for more and more Islamic knowledge grew.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I searched and scoured until I found the truth I had always been looking for within the pages of the Quran.  I made the decision to become a Muslim and I went shopping for my first hijab<\/em> all by myself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My husband turned into my teacher as he taught me all about Islam, fasting and the Islamic prayer.  When I made mistakes or faltered, he did not scold me but increased his own efforts in teaching me everything properly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

His patience was remarkable as my own grew thin.  I wanted to know a lot about Islam and it was just not something that happened overnight.  But it did happen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Islam has brought a sense of calm to my very being and a serene atmosphere to my home as well as my marriage.  Since I became a Muslim I have noticed that I am less stressed or worried about the future.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I have a lot more patience and do not get as flustered as I used to with the little nuances of daily living.  Through the Quran and Sunnah of  Prophet Muhammad I have learned what this life really is all about and strive every day to engage in good deeds that will open the door to the next World to come.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Hace 12 años que me casé con mi esposo musulmán, y el camino ha sido realmente largo y movido, pero feliz. Por la época en que me casé, yo era católica y no tenía la intención de convertirme al Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mi nuevo esposo era muy comprensivo y solo me pidió que al menos tratara de leer una traducción del Corán al inglés de vez en cuando. Acepté. Pronto nos trasladamos a Kuwait pues la economía de los Estados Unidos era muy débil en ese entonces y nos era imposible mantener una buena vida.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En el instante en que bajé del avión fui introducida a un mundo completamente nuevo que estaba lleno de Islam, musulmanes, tradiciones culturales y una forma completamente nueva de pensamiento. Sería poco decir que estaba aterrada hasta la médula ósea. Todo lo que quería hacer era saltar de nuevo al avión y volar lejos de este extraño mundo nuevo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sin embargo, mi esposo musulmán estuvo a mi lado a cada paso del camino. Cuando descubrí que su madre cocinaba con muchos condimentos, él se aseguró de que tuviera disponibles otras opciones de comida, incluyendo algunos artículos culinarios estadounidenses, como McDonald’s y Pizza Hut.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cuando me ponía nostálgica por mi familia en los Estados Unidos, él permanecía toda la noche consolándome y ofreciéndome llevarme a “casa”. Durante cada momento feliz, cada enfermedad, y en los días en que estaba tan triste que apenas podía sonreír, mi esposo musulmán estaba a mi lado sosteniendo mi mano. Él es mi mejor amigo, confidente, y el padre de mis hijos. Igualmente comparte el cambio de pañales sucios, la patrulla de derrames, y el manejo de las rabietas. Nada lo descompone, ni siquiera cuando los niños vomitan en su camisa nueva o cuando tiene que lavar los platos porque estoy demasiado cansada para moverme.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Es infortunado que los esposos musulmanes, especialmente, reciban tan mala prensa en los medios occidentales. Muy a menudo los esposos musulmanes son retratados como monstruos controladores que obligan a sus esposas a vestir el “uniforme islámico”.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

La realidad es que tanto los esposos como las esposas musulmanes a menudo deciden seguir un código islámico de vestimenta porque está ordenado en el Corán y en la Sunna del Profeta Muhammad. No es un tema de fuerza ni una guerra de voluntades.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Dios Todopoderoso dice en el Corán (lo que significa):<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Dile a los creyentes [¡oh, Muhammad!] que recaten sus miradas y se abstengan de cometer obscenidades, porque eso es más puro para ellos. Dios está bien informado de lo que hacen. Dile a las creyentes que recaten sus miradas, se abstengan de cometer obscenidades, no muestren de sus atractivos [en público] más de lo que es obvio, y que dejen caer el velo sobre su escote”. (Corán 24:30-31)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yo, en lo personal, vine a Kuwait vistiendo camiseta y jeans. Vestía lo que quería y ni mi esposo ni su familia musulmana me decían nada al respecto.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sin embargo, mi esposo siguió pidiéndome que leyera el Corán. Sus recordatorios gentiles y a veces fastidiosos, dieron resultado. Finalmente comencé a leer el Corán y creció mi hambre por conocer más y más sobre el Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Busqué y hurgué hasta que encontré la verdad que siempre había buscado dentro de las páginas del Corán. Tomé la decisión de hacerme musulmana y me fui a comprar mi primer hiyab<\/em> yo misma.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mi esposo se convirtió en mi profesor y me enseñó todo sobre el Islam, el ayuno y la oración islámica. Cuando cometía algún error o vacilaba, no me reprendía, sino que aumentaba sus esfuerzos por enseñarme todo apropiadamente.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Su paciencia era notable, ya que la mía era poca. Quería saber mucho sobre el Islam y eso no era algo que ocurriría de la noche a la mañana. Pero ocurrió.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

El Islam ha traído un sentimiento de calma a mi propio ser y una atmósfera serena a mi hogar así como a mi matrimonio. Desde que me hice musulmana me he dado cuenta de que estoy menos estresada o preocupada respecto al futuro.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ahora soy mucho más paciente y no me pongo tan nerviosa como acostumbraba debido a las cosas pequeñas de la vida diaria. A través del Corán y de la Sunnah del Profeta Muhammad he aprendido que esta vida realmente es para esforzarnos a diario en realizar obras buenas que nos abran la puerta hacia el mundo siguiente por venir.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sumayyah Mihan se convirtió al Islam hace casi 11 años. Ella es graduada de Waynesburg College con un título en justicia criminal. Está escribiendo un libro islámico para niños. Actualmente reside en Kuwait con su esposo y tres hijos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Voilà douze ans que j’ai épousé mon mari et, même si notre chemin fut long et tortueux, il n’en fut pas moins heureux.  Au moment de notre mariage, j’étais catholique et n’avais aucune intention de me convertir à l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mon mari se montra très compréhensif envers moi et ne me demanda qu’une chose, soit que je fasse au moins l’effort de lire le Coran (en anglais).  J’acceptai.  Peu après notre mariage, nous déménageâmes au Koweït, car l’économie américaine, à l’époque, ne nous permettait pas de gagner décemment notre vie.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

À la seconde où je descendis de l’avion, je fus plongée dans un univers totalement différent du mien, un univers d’islam, de musulmans, de traditions culturelles et de mœurs jusqu’alors inconnues de moi.  Dire que je fus secouée jusqu’au plus profond de mon être est un euphémisme.  Ma première pensée fut de remonter aussitôt dans l’avion et de fuir ce monde étrange au plus vite.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Et pourtant, à travers tout cela, mon mari musulman demeura toujours à mes côtés, me soutenant à chaque instant.  Lorsque je lui avouai que la cuisine de sa mère était trop épicée pour moi, il fit en sorte que d’autres choix alimentaires soient toujours disponibles pour moi.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quand j’avais le mal du pays et que je pleurais parce que ma famille me manquait, il restait à mes côtés toute la nuit, me consolant et m’offrant de me ramener chez moi quelque temps.  À travers les moments heureux, à travers mes problèmes de santé et les jours où je me sentais si triste que j’arrivais à peine à sourire, mon mari fut toujours là, me tenant la main et me souriant.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mon mari devint aussi mon professeur, car il m’enseigna l’islam, le jeûne et la prière.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mon mari est mon meilleur ami, mon confident et le père de mes enfants.  Jamais il n’a rechigné à changer une couche, à nettoyer les dégâts et à négocier les crises de colère des enfants.  Rien ne le décontenance, pas même un des enfants vomissant sur sa chemise toute neuve ou l’obligation de laver la vaisselle lorsque je suis éreintée.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Il est dommage que les maris musulmans aient si mauvaise réputation.  Dans la culture populaire occidentale, ils sont dépeints comme des hommes excessivement autoritaires, qui forcent leur femme à porter la tenue islamique.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En réalité, c’est le plus souvent la femme qui choisit elle-même de se couvrir modestement, par croyance aux préceptes du Coran et de la sounnah.  Ce n’est donc pas une question de force ou de guerre entre mari et femme.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Dieu dit, dans le Coran :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Dis aux croyants de maintenir leur regard baissé et de préserver leur chasteté.  C’est bien plus pur pour eux.  Nul doute que Dieu sait parfaitement ce qu’ils font!  Et dis aux croyantes de baisser leur regard, de préserver leur chasteté et de ne montrer de (leur beauté et) de leurs ornements que ce qui en paraît (ordinairement). » (Coran 24:30)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Personnellement, je suis arrivée au Koweït portant un jean et un t-shirt et ni mon mari ni sa famille ne me firent jamais aucune remarque à ce sujet.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Toutefois, mon mari me demanda de continuer, si possible, à lire le Coran.  Ses rappels subtils et sa ténacité, à cet égard, finirent par porter fruit.  Car au fur et à mesure que je lisais le Coran, mon désir d’accroître mes connaissances sur l’islam en général grandissait.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je fis mes recherches jusqu’à ce que je sois convaincue d’avoir trouvé la vérité et cette vérité, c’est dans les pages du Coran qu’elle se trouve.  Je pris la décision d’embrasser l’islam et sortis magasiner mon premier hijab toute seule.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mon mari fut toujours à mes côtés.  Si je faisais des erreurs, il ne me réprimandait pas, mais redoublait simplement d’efforts pour mieux m’enseigner l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Si ma patience ne tenait parfois plus qu’à un fil, la sienne devenait remarquable.  Je voulais tout savoir tout de suite, sur l’islam, mais cela ne peut se faire du jour au lendemain.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

L’islam a apporté beaucoup de calme, dans ma vie, de même qu’une atmosphère plus sereine, à la maison.  Depuis que je suis devenue musulmane, j’ai remarqué que j’étais moins stressée et moins angoissée au sujet de l’avenir.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

J’ai beaucoup plus de patience et je ne m’énerve plus comme je le faisais pour des bagatelles.  Le Coran et la sounnah m’ont appris le véritable sens de cette vie et je m’efforce chaque jour de faire de bonnes actions susceptibles de m’ouvrir les portes du Paradis.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sumayyah Meehan s’est convertie à l’islam il y a presque onze ans.  Elle est diplômée en justice criminelle du Waynesburg College.  Elle travaille présentement à un projet de livre islamique pour enfants.  Elle vit au Koweït avec son mari et ses trois enfants.<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Es ist12 Jahre her, dass ich meinen muslimischen Ehemann geheiratet habe und der Weg war wahrlich lang und stürmisch, aber glücklich.  Zu der Zeit, als ich geheiratet habe, war ich katholisch und hatte nicht die Absicht, zum Islam zu konvertieren. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mein neuer Ehemann war sehr verständnisvoll und fragte nur, ob ich nicht wenigstens versuchen würde, bei Gelegenheit die englische Übersetzung des Qur´an zu lesen.  Ich war damit einverstanden.  Wir zogen bald nach Kuwait, denn die Wirtschaftslage in den USA war so schwach, dass es unmöglich war, seinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

In der Minute, als ich aus dem Flugzeug stieg, war ich zuversichtlich auf eine neue Welt voll von Islam, Muslimen, kulturellen Traditionen und einer ganz neuen Denkweise.  Wenn ich sage, ich war in meinem Innersten erschüttert, in blindem Schrecken, ist eine Untertreibung.  Alles, was ich tun wollte, war gleich wieder zurück ins Flugzeug zu springen und von dieser fremdartigen neuen Welt wieder wegzufliegen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Doch durch all dies hindurch war mein muslimischer Ehemann auf jedem Schritt an meiner Seite.  Als mich das Essen seiner Mutter zu würzig war, sorgte er dafür, dass andere Dinge zum Essen vorhanden waren, einschließlich amerikanischer Küche wie McDonald’s und Pizza Hut.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Als ich Heimweh nach meiner Familie in den US hatte, blieb er die ganze Nacht mit mir wach, tröstete mich und bot mir an, mich nach „Hause“ zu bringen.  Durch alle glücklichen Augenblicke hindurch, bei jeder Krankheit und an den Tagen, an denen ich so traurig war, dass ich kaum ein Lächeln zustande brachte, war mein muslimischer Ehemann da, um meine Hand zu halten.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mein Ehemann wurde zu meinem Lehrer, als er mir alles über den Islam, das Fasten und das islamische Gebet beibrachte.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Er ist mein bester Freund, Vertrauter und der Vater meiner Kinder.  Er beteiligt sich gleichermaßen am Wechseln schmutziger Windeln, Flecken entfernen und am im- Keim-ersticken von Wutanfällen.  Nichts erschüttert ihn, nicht einmal wenn die Kinder etwas auf sein brandneues T-Shirt werfen oder dass er das Geschirr abwaschen muss, weil ich zu müde bin, um mich noch zu bewegen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Es ist bedauerlich, dass muslimische Ehemänner vor allem in den westlichen Medien so einen schlechten Ruf genießen.  Ziemlich oft werden sie als Kontroll-Freaks porträtiert, die ihre Frauen zwingen, ein „islamisches Gewand“ zu tragen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Wirklichkeit entscheiden sich sowohl die muslimischen Ehemänner als auch ihre Frauen, einem islamischen Bekleidungskodex zu folgen, denn dies ist im Qur´an und in der Sunna des Propheten Muhammad befohlen worden.  Das ist keine Frage des Zwanges oder eines Willenskampfes. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Gott, der Allmächtige, sagt im Qur´an, was der Bedeutung nach wie folgt übersetzt werden kann:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Sprich zu den gläubigen Männern, dass sie ihre Blicke zu Boden schlagen und ihre Keuschheit wahren sollen. Das ist reiner für sie. Wahrlich, Gott ist dessen, was sie tun, recht wohl kundig.” (Quran 24:30)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Was mich betrifft, ich bin in T-Shirt und Blue Jeans nach Kuwait gekommen.  Ich trug, was ich mir ausgesucht hatte und weder mein muslimischer Ehemann noch seine Familie haben irgendetwas zu mir gesagt. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Allerdings hat mein Ehemann mich weiter darum gebeten, den Qur´an zu lesen. Seine sanften, manchmal drängenden Erinnerungen zahlten sich aus.  Schließlich begann ich, den Qur´an zu lesen und mein Hunger nach mehr und mehr islamischem Wissen wuchs. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich erforschte und suchte, bis ich die Wahrheit heraus fand, die ich in den Seiten des Qur´an immer gesucht hatte.  Ich entschied mich, Muslima zu werden, und ich ging selbst meinen ersten Hijab<\/em> kaufen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mein Ehemann wurde zu meinem Lehrer, als er mir alles über den Islam, das Fasten und das islamische Gebet beibrachte.   Wenn ich Fehler machte oder stockte, schimpfte er mich nicht, sondern vermehrte seine eigenen Anstrengungen, um mir alles richtig beizubringen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Seine Geduld war bewundernswert, wenn meine schwach wurde.  Ich wollte viel über den Islam erfahren, und das war nicht etwas, das über Nacht geschah.  Aber es geschah.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Der Islam hat einen Sinn der Ruhe in mein Wesen gebracht, und eine gelassene Atmosphäre sowohl in mein Heim als auch in meine Ehe.  Seit ich Muslima geworden bin, habe ich festgestellt, dass ich seltener gestresst bin oder weniger besorgt über die Zukunft. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ich habe viel mehr Geduld und werde nicht so schnell nervös, wie ich es sonst bei den kleinen Schwankungen des täglichen Lebens geworden bin.  Durch den Qur´an und die Sunna des Propheten Muhammad habe ich gelernt, worum es in diesem Leben wirklich geht und strebe jeden Tag danach, gute Taten zu verrichten, die mir das Tor zur nächsten kommenden Welt öffnen werden.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
