“Strongest among men in enmity to the Believers wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the Believers wilt thou find those who say “We are Christians”: because amongst these are men devoted to learning (priests), and men who have renounced the world (monks), and they are not arrogant.  And then they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognize the truth.  They pray: ‘Our Lord!  We believe, write us down among the witnesses.’ (Surat Al-Maida 82-83)”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This was what happened to the former British Catholic Priest Idris Tawfiq on reciting Islam’s holy book, the Quran, to his students at a school in Britain.  And this was one of the important steps in his journey of conversion to Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During a recent lecture he gave at the British Council in Cairo, Tawfiq made clear that he has no regrets about his past and what he holds in regard to what Christians do and his life at the Vatican for five years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“I enjoyed being a priest helping the people for some years.  However, deep inside I was not happy and I felt that there was something not right.  Fortunately, and it is God’s will, some events and coincidences in my life led me to Islam,” he told a packed hall at the British Council.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A second important coincidence for Tawfiq was his decision to quit his work at the Vatican, a step followed by making a trip to Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“I used to think of Egypt as a country of Pyramids, camels, sand and palm trees.  I actually took a charter flight to Hurghada.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Shocked to find it similar to some European beaches, I took the first bus to Cairo where I spent the most wonderful week in my life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This was my first introduction to Muslims and Islam.  I noticed how Egyptians are such gentle, sweet people, but also very strong.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Like all Britons, my knowledge about Muslims up to that time didn’t exceed what I heard from the TV about suicide bombers and fighters, which gave the impression that Islam is a religion of troubles.  However, getting into Cairo I discovered how beautiful this religion is.  Very simple people selling goods on the street would abandon their trade and direct their face to Allah and pray the moment they heard the call to prayer from the mosque. They have a strong faith in the presence and will of Allah.  They pray, fast, help the needy and dream to have a trip to Mecca with the hope of living in heaven in the hereafter,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“On my return I resumed my old job of teaching religion.  The only compulsory subject in British education is Religious Studies.  I was teaching about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and others.  So everyday I had to read about these religions to be able to teach my lessons to the students, many of whom were Arab Muslim refugees.  In other words, teaching about Islam taught me many things.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Unlike many troublesome teenagers, these students set a good example of what a Muslim could be.  They were polite and kind.  So a friendship developed between us and they asked if they could use my classroom for prayers during the fasting month of Ramadan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Luckily, my room was the only one with a carpet.  So I got accustomed to sitting at the back, watching them praying for a month.  I sought to encourage them by fasting during Ramadan with them, even though I wasn’t yet a Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Once while reciting a translation of the holy Quran in class I reached the verse:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“And when they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognize the truth.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

To my surprise, I felt tears welling up in my eyes and I tried hard to hide it from the students.”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Earth-shaking event<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

A turning point in his life, however, came in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the US on September 11, 2001.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“The following day, I was taking the underground and noticed how terrified the people were.  I was also afraid of the repetition of such acts in Britain.  At the time, the Western people started fearing this religion they blamed for terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“However, my previous experience with Muslims took me to a different direction.  I started wondering ‘Why Islam?  Why do we blame Islam as a religion for the action of terrorists who happened to be Muslims, when no-one accused Christianity of terrorism when some Christians have acted the same way?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“One day I headed to the biggest Mosque in London, to hear more about this religion.  Getting into London Central Mosque, there was Yusuf Islam, the former pop singer, sitting in a circle talking to some people about Islam.  After a while, I found myself asking him” ‘What do you actually do to become a Muslim?’”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“He answered that a Muslim should believe in one God, pray five times a day and fast during Ramadan.  I interrupted him saying that I believed all this and had even fasted during Ramadan.  So he asked, ‘What are you waiting for?  What is holding you back?’  I said, ‘No, I don’t intend to convert.’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“At that moment the call to prayer was made and everyone got ready and stood in lines to pray.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“I sat at the back, and I cried and cried.  Then I said to myself, ‘Who am I trying to fool?’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“After they ended their prayers, I headed to Yusuf Islam, asking him to teach me the words by which I announce my conversion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“After explaining its meanings to me in English, I recited after him in Arabic that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,” recounted Tawfiq, holding back his tears.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

‘Gardens of Islam’<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Thus his life has taken a different course.  Living in Egypt, Tawfiq wrote a book about the tenets of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Explaining why he penned his book Gardens of Delight: a Simple Introduction to Islam, Tawfiq noted that everyone is saying that Islam is not a religion of terrorism and isn’t a religion of hatred, but no-one tries to explain what it is.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“So I decided to write this book to give non-Muslims an idea about the basic principles of Islam.  I tried to tell people how beautiful Islam is and that Islam has the most extraordinary treasures, the most important being Muslims’ love for each other.  The Prophet says ‘Even a smile to your brother is a charity.’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tawfiq told the Gazette that he is working on a book about the Prophet Muhammad [may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him] which he thinks will be different from the many books already written about him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 He thinks that the “best and fastest way” of acquainting the world with the true image of Islam is to set a good example in real life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Encontrarás que los peores enemigos de los creyentes son los judíos y los idólatras, y los más allegados a ellos en afecto son quienes dicen: Somos cristianos. Esto es porque entre ellos hay sacerdotes y monjes [sabios y desapegados], y por que no son soberbios. Y cuando oyen lo que le ha sido revelado al Mensajero, ves que sus ojos se inundan de lágrimas porque reconocen la Verdad. Dicen: ¡Señor nuestro! Creemos, cuéntanos, pues, entre quienes son testigos [de la Verdad]”. (Sura Al-Maida 5:82-83)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Esto fue lo que le pasó al antiguo sacerdote católico británico Idris Tawfiq, al recitar el libro sagrado del Islam, el Corán, a sus estudiantes en un colegio en el Reino Unido. Y este fue uno de los pasos importantes en su viaje de conversión al  Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante una conferencia que dio en el Consejo Británico en El Cairo, Tawfiq dejó en claro que él no tiene remordimientos acerca de su pasado y lo que él guarda acerca de lo que los cristianos hacen y su vida en el Vaticano por cinco años.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Yo disfruté siendo sacerdote, ayudando a la gente por algunos años. Sin embargo, en mi interior no estaba feliz y sentía que había algo que no estaba bien. Afortunadamente, y es la voluntad de Dios, algunos eventos y coincidencias en mi vida me llevaron al Islam”, le dijo a un auditorio lleno en el Consejo Británico.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Una segunda importante coincidencia para Tawfiq fue su decisión de renunciar a su trabajo en el Vaticano, un paso seguido por hacer un viaje Egipto.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Yo solía pensar acerca de Egipto como un país de pirámides, camellos, arena y árboles de palma. De hecho, tomé un vuelo charter a Hurghada.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sorprendido de encontrarlo similar a algunas playas europeas, tomé el primer bus al Cairo donde pasé la más maravillosa semana de mi vida.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Esta fue mi primera introducción a los musulmanes y al Islam. Yo note qué tan gentiles, dulces y a la vez fuertes personas son los egipcios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Como todos los ingleses, mi conocimiento acerca de los musulmanes en ese tiempo no excedía lo que oía en la televisión acerca de los bombarderos y combatientes suicidas, lo que daba la impresión de que el Islam era una religión de problemas. Sin embargo, al llegar al Cairo descubrí qué religión tan bella es.  Gente muy simple vendiendo bienes en las calles, abandonaban su comercio y dirigían su rostro a Allah y oraban en el momento en que oían el llamado a la oración desde la mezquita. Ellos tienen una fuerte fe en la presencia y en la voluntad de Allah. Oran, ayunan, ayudan a los necesitados y sueñan con tener un viaje a La Meca, con la esperanza de vivir en el Paraíso en el más allá”, dijo él.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“A mi regreso reanudé mi antiguo trabajo de enseñar religión. La única materia obligatoria en la educación británica es Estudios Religiosos. Yo estaba enseñando acerca del cristianismo, el Islam, el judaísmo, el budismo y otras religiones. Por lo tanto, todos los días tenía que leer acerca de estas religiones para ser capaz de enseñar mi lecciones a los estudiantes, muchos de los cuales eran refugiados musulmanes árabes. En otras palabras, enseñar acerca del Islam me enseñó muchas cosas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A diferencia de muchos adolescentes problemáticos, estos estudiantes establecían un buen ejemplo de lo que un musulmán podía ser. Ellos eran decentes y amables. Entonces, una amistad se desarrolló entre nosotros y ellos preguntaron si ellos podían usar mi salón de clases para oraciones durante el mes de ayuno de Ramadán.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Afortunadamente, mi salón era el único con una alfombra. Entonces yo me acostumbré a sentarme atrás, observándolos orar por un mes. Yo buscaba alentarlos ayunando durante Ramadán con ellos, aunque yo aún no era musulmán.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Una vez, mientras estaba recitando una traducción del Sagrado Corán en clase, llegué a este verso:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Y cuando oyen lo que le ha sido revelado al Mensajero ves que sus ojos se inundan de lágrimas porque reconocen la Verdad”.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Para mi sorpresa, sentí las lágrimas llenando mis ojos y traté fuertemente de esconderlo de los estudiantes”.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

El evento que sacudió la tierra<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Un momento decisivo en su vida, sin embargo, vino tras los ataques terroristas en los Estados Unidos el 11 de septiembre de 2001.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“El día siguiente, yo estaba tomando en tren subterráneo y note qué tan asustada estaba la gente. También estaba asustado de la repetición de tales actos en Inglaterra. En ese tiempo, la gente occidental empezó a temer a esta religión que ellos culpaban de terrorismo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sin embargo, mi experiencia previa con los musulmanes me llevó a una dirección diferente. Yo empecé a preguntarme: ¿Por qué el Islam?  ¿Por qué culpamos al Islam como una religión por las acciones de terroristas que resultan ser musulmanes, cuando nadie acusó al cristianismo de terrorismo cuando algunos cristianos han actuado en la misma forma?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un día me dirigí a la Mezquita más grande en Londres para oír más acerca de esta religión. Al llegar a la Mezquita Central de Londres, allí estaba Yusuf Islam, el antiguo cantante de pop, sentando en un círculo hablando a algunas personas acerca del Islam. Luego de un momento, yo me encontré a mí mismo preguntándole a él: ‘¿Qué hace uno, de hecho, para convertirse en musulmán?’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Él me contestó que un musulmán debe creer en un Dios, orar cinco veces al día y hacer el ayuno durante Ramadán. Yo lo interrumpí diciendo que creía en todo esto y que incluso había hecho el ayuno durante Ramadán. Entonces él preguntó: ‘¿Qué estás esperando? ¿Qué te está reteniendo?’ Yo dije: ‘No, yo no intento convertirme’.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

En ese momento la llamada a la oración fue hecha y todos se alistaron y se pararon en línea para orar.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yo me senté atrás, y lloré y lloré. Luego me dije a mí mismo: ‘¿A quién estoy tratando de engañar?’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Luego de que ellos terminaron sus oraciones, me dirigí hacia Yusuf Islam, pidiéndole que me enseñara las palabras por las que yo anunciaba mi conversión.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Luego de explicarme sus significados en Inglés, yo recité después de él en árabe que no hay Dios sino Allah y que Muhammad es el Mensajero de Allah”, recordó Tawfiq, reteniendo sus lágrimas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

‘Jardines del Islam’<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

De esta forma su vida ha tomado un curso diferente. Viviendo en Egipto, Tawfiq escribió un libro acerca de los principios del Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Explicando por qué escribió su libro Jardines de Deleite: una Simple Introducción al Islam<\/em>, Tawfiq resaltó que todos están diciendo que el Islam no es una religión de terrorismo y no es una religión de odio, pero nadie trata de explicar qué es lo que sí es.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Entonces decidí escribir este libro para dar a los no musulmanes una idea acerca de los principios básicos del Islam. Traté de decirle a la gente lo hermoso que es el Islam, que el Islam tiene los más extraordinarios tesoros, siendo el más importante que los musulmanes se aman los unos a los otros. El Profeta dice:‘Incluso una sonrisa a tu hermano es una caridad’<\/strong>”.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tawfiq le dijo a The Gazette<\/em> que él está trabajando en un libro acerca del Profeta Muhammad, la paz y las bendiciones de Dios sean con él, el cual piensa que será diferente de los muchos libros ya escritos acerca de él.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Él piensa que la “mejor y más rápida forma” de presentarle al mundo la verdadera imagen del Islam, es establecer un buen ejemplo en la vida real.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

« Tu trouveras certainement que les juifs et les idolâtres sont les ennemis les plus acharnés des croyants.  Et tu trouveras que les plus disposés à aimer les croyants sont ceux qui disent : « Nous sommes chrétiens. »  C’est qu’ils comptent parmi eux des prêtres et des moines, et qu’ils ne sont point orgueilleux.  Quand ils écoutent ce qui a été révélé au messager, tu vois leurs yeux déborder de larmes, parce qu’ils ont reconnu la vérité.  Ils disent : « Seigneur !  Nous croyons!  Inscris-nous parmi ceux qui témoignent (de la vérité). » (Coran 5:82-83)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

C’est exactement ce que vécut Idris Tawfiq, ex-prêtre catholique britannique, en lisant quelques versets du Coran à ses étudiants, dans une école anglaise.  Ce fut un des pas les plus importants sur la voie de son cheminement vers l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Au cours d’une conférence récente, au Conseil Britannique du Caire, il a clairement affirmé qu’il n’éprouvait aucun regret au sujet de son passé et de ses cinq années au Vatican.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « J’ai aimé mon travail de prêtre, les années passées à aider les gens, même si tout au fond de moi, je n’étais pas réellement heureux, car je sentais que quelque chose n’allait pas avec le mode de vie que j’avais choisi.  Heureusement, par la grâce de Dieu, certains événements et « coïncidences » ayant croisé ma route m’ont mené tout droit vers l’islam », a-t-il raconté devant une salle comble au Conseil Britannique.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Le second pas important sur la voie de sa conversion fut sa décision de quitter son travail au Vatican et de partir pour l’Égypte.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « L’idée que je me faisais de l’Égypte était celle du pays des pyramides, des chameaux, du sable et des palmiers.  Je pris un charter en direction de Hurghada. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Choqué d’y trouver des plages pratiquement identiques à celles d’Europe, je pris le premier autobus en direction du Caire, où je passai la plus belle semaine de ma vie. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Ce fut mon premier vrai contact avec l’islam et les musulmans.  Je remarquai à quel point les Égyptiens étaient doux et gentils, tout en ayant un caractère fort.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Comme la plupart des Britanniques, mes connaissances sur l’islam et les musulmans, jusque-là, s’étaient résumées à ce que j’avais entendu et lu dans les médias sur les kamikazes et les terroristes, informations qui donnaient l’impression que l’islam était une religion « à problèmes ».  Mais une fois au Caire, je réalisai à quel point l’islam est une belle religion.  Des gens très simples, très humbles, vendant divers objets sur la rue, laissaient tout tomber pour quelques minutes, à l’appel du muezzin, le temps de se tourner vers la Mecque et de faire leur prière.  Je constatai qu’ils avaient une foi très ferme et qu’ils gardaient une conscience constante de la présence d’Allah et de Sa volonté.  Ils priaient, jeûnaient, aidaient les gens dans le besoin et rêvaient d’aller à la Mecque, tout cela dans l’espoir d’aller au Paradis. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « À mon retour [en Angleterre], je repris mon ancien emploi de professeur de religion.  J’enseignais le christianisme, l’islam, le judaïsme, le bouddhisme et quelques autres religions.  Alors chaque jour, je faisais quelques lectures sur ces religions afin d’alimenter mes cours.  Parmi mes étudiants, plusieurs étaient des réfugiés arabo-musulmans.  En enseignant l’islam, j’appris moi-même beaucoup de choses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Contrairement à la plupart des adolescents, mes étudiants musulmans étaient de bons exemples pour les autres.  Ils étaient polis et aimables.  Une certaine amitié se développa petit à petit entre eux et moi et un jour, ils me demandèrent s’ils pouvaient utiliser mon local de classe pour faire leurs prières durant le mois de Ramadan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Heureusement, mon local était le seul qui possédait un tapis.  Durant tout le mois, je pris donc l’habitude de m’asseoir à l’arrière et de les regarder prier.  Je cherchai aussi à les encourager en jeûnant moi-même pendant le Ramadan, même si je n’étais pas musulman.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Un jour, en lisant à voix haute une traduction du Coran, en classe, j’arrivai au verset qui dit :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Quand ils écoutent ce qui a été révélé au messager, tu vois leurs yeux déborder de larmes, parce qu’ils ont reconnu la vérité. »<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « À ma grande surprise, je sentis mes yeux s’emplir de larmes, que je m’efforçai de cacher à mes étudiants. »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Un événement marquant<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Puis, il y eut un tournant dans la vie d’Idris Tawfiq, suite aux attaques terroristes du 11 septembre 2001.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Le jour suivant, je pris le métro et je constatai à quel point les gens étaient terrifiés.  Je craignais également la répétition de tels actes en Grande-Bretagne.  C’est à cette époque que les Occidentaux se mirent à vraiment craindre cette religion qu’ils blâmaient pour ces actes terroristes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Pour ma part, cependant, les expériences que j’avais vécues avec des musulmans me faisaient voir les choses différemment.  Je me demandais : « Pourquoi l’islam?  Pourquoi jette-t-on le blâme sur toute une religion pour les actions de quelques terroristes qui se prétendent musulmans?  Et pourquoi personne ne jette jamais le blâme sur le christianisme lorsque des criminels de tradition judéo-chrétienne commettent des actes similaires?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Un jour, je me rendis dans une des plus grandes mosquées de Londres afin d’en apprendre plus sur cette religion.  En entrant dans la London Central Mosque, je vis Yusuf Islam, ancien chanteur pop, assis en cercle avec d’autres personnes auxquelles il parlait d’islam.  Je m’assis avec eux et à un certain moment, je m’entendis demander : « Que dois faire une personne, exactement, pour devenir  musulmane? »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Il me répondit qu’un musulman doit croire en un seul Dieu, prier cinq fois par jour, jeûner le mois de Ramadan...  Je l’interrompis en disant que je croyais et acceptais déjà tout cela et que j’avais même jeûné le mois de Ramadan.  Alors il me demanda : « Qu’attends-tu?  Qu’est-ce qui te retient? »  Je dis : « Non...  Je n’ai pas l’intention de me convertir. »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « À ce moment, l’appel à la prière retentit et tout le monde se leva et se mit en rang pour prier.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « J’allai m’asseoir à l’arrière et je me mis à pleurer, à pleurer...  Je me dis en moi-même : « Qui essaies-tu de tromper, au juste? »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Après la prière, j’allai voir Yusuf Islam et lui demandai de m’apprendre les mots qui allaient faire de moi un musulman.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Après m’en avoir expliqué la signification en anglais, il me fit réciter après lui en arabe : « Il n’y a pas d’autre Dieu qu’Allah et Mohammed est Son messager », raconte Idris Tawfiq en retenant ses larmes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Jardins d’islam »<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

C’est ainsi que sa vie emprunta une voie différente.  Idris Tawfiq habite maintenant en Égypte et est l’auteur d’un livre sur les principes de la foi islamique.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Expliquant pourquoi il a intitulé son livre « Gardens of Delight : a Simple Introduction to Islam » (Jardins des délices : une courte introduction à l’islam), il fait remarquer que tout le monde répète que l’islam n’est pas une religion de terroristes ni une religion de haine, mais que personne ne prend la peine d’expliquer exactement ce qu’est l’islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « J’ai décidé d’écrire ce livre pour donner aux non-musulmans une idée des principes de base de l’islam.  J’ai essayé de leur montrer à quel point l’islam est une belle religion et qu’il renferme des trésors extraordinaires, dont l’un des plus importants est l’amour que les musulmans éprouvent les uns envers les autres.  Le Prophète (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui) a dit : « Même sourire à son frère est un acte de charité. »<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Idris Tawfiq a déclaré à la Gazette qu’il travaille en ce moment à la rédaction d’un livre sur le prophète Mohammed (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui), qu’il espère différent des nombreux livres déjà écrits à son sujet.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 Il croit que la meilleure façon de faire connaître au monde le véritable islam est d’en être soi-même un bon exemple dans sa vie quotidienne.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“ Sicherlich findest du, dass unter allen Menschen die Juden und die Götzendiener die erbittertsten Gegner der Gläubigen sind. Und du wirst zweifellos finden, dass die, welche sagen: \"Wir sind Christen\" den Gläubigen am freundlichsten gegenüberstehen. Dies (ist so), weil es unter ihnen Priester und Mönche gibt und weil sie nicht hochmütig sind. Und wenn sie hören, was zu dem Gesandten herab gesandt worden ist, siehst du ihre Augen von Tränen überfließen ob der Wahrheit, die sie erkannt haben. Sie sagen: \"Unser Herr, wir glauben, so schreibe uns unter die Bezeugenden.’ (Sura Al-Maida 82-83)”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 Dies ist es, was dem früheren britischen katholischen Priester Idris Tawfiq passierte, als er die Heilige Schrift des Islam, den Qur´an, vor seinen Schülern an einer Schule in Großbritannien vorlas.  Und dies war ein wichtiger Schritt auf seiner Reise zur Annahme des Islam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Während eines Vortrags, den er letztens am britischen Konzil in Kairo gehalten hatte, machte Tawfiq deutlich, dass er seine Vergangenheit nicht bereut, was er davon hält, was die Christen tun und er berichtete über die fünf Jahre seines Lebens im Vatikan.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ich habe es einige Jahre lang genossen, ein Priester zu sein, der den Menschen hilft, tief in mir drin aber war ich nicht glücklich, und ich fühlte, dass irgendetwas nicht richtig war.  Glücklicherweise – und es ist Gottes Wille – haben mich einige Ereignisse und Zufälle in meinem Leben zum Islam geführt”, erzählte er vor einem dicht gefüllten Saal im britischen Konzil.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ein zweiter wichtiger Zufall war Tawfiqs Entscheidung, seine Arbeit im Vatikan aufzugeben, ein Schritt auf den eine Reise nach Ägypten folgte.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ich dachte immer an Ägypten als Land der Pyramiden und Kamele, des Sandes und der Palmen.  Also nahm ich einen Charterflug nach Hurghada.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Erstaunt darüber, etwas den europäischen Stränden ähnliches vorzufinden, nahm ich den ersten Bus nach Kairo, wo ich die wunderbarste Woche meines Lebens verbrachte. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Dies war meine erste Tuchfühlung mit Muslimen und dem Islam.  Mir fiel, wie die Ägypter waren: so sanfte, süße Menschen, aber auch sehr stark. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Wie bei allen Briten gingen meine Kenntnisse über den Islam nicht über das hinaus, was ich im TV über Selbstmordattentäter und Glaubenskämpfer gehört hatte, was den Eindruck erweckte, als sei der Islam eine Religion des Unfriedens.  Aber als ich nach Kairo kam, entdeckte ich, wie wunderbar diese Religion ist.  Ganz einfache Menschen, die auf der Straße ihre Güter verkauften, verließen ihren Handel und richteten ihre Gesichter zu Allah und beteten augenblicklich, sobald sie den Gebetsruf von der Moschee hörten.  Sie haben einen starken Glauben an die Anwesenheit und den Willen Allahs.  Sie beten, fasten, helfen Bedürftigen und träumen davon, eine Reise nach Mekka machen zu können, mit der Hoffnung auf ein Leben im Himmel im Jenseits. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Nach meiner Rückkehr machte ich in meinem alten Job weiter, das war Religion zu lehren.  Das einzige Pflichtfach in Großbritannien war Religionskunde.  Ich lehrte über das Christentum, den Islam, das Judentum, den Buddhismus und andere.  Daher musste ich jeden Tag etwas über diese Religionen lesen, um darüber meinen Studenten Lektionen zu geben, von denen viele arabische muslimische Flüchtlinge waren.  Mit anderen Worten das Lehren über den Islam lehrte mich viele Dinge.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Anders als viele anstrengende Teenager waren diese Schüler gute Beispiele dafür, wie ein Muslim sein sollte.  Sie waren höflich und freundlich.  So entwickelte sich eine Freundschaft zwischen uns, und sie fragten, ob sie meinen Klassenraum zum Beten während des Fastenmonats Ramadhan nutzen dürfen. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Glücklicherweise war mein Raum der einzige mit Teppich.  Da gewöhnte ich mir an, hinten zu sitzen und ihnen einen Monat lang beim Beten zuzusehen.  Ich dachte, ich könnte sie aufmuntern, indem ich den Ramadhan mit ihnen fastete, obwohl ich noch kein Muslim war. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Einmal als ich eine Übersetzung des heiligen Qur´an in der Klasse las, rezitierte ich den Vers:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Und wenn sie hören, was zu dem Gesandten herab gesandt worden ist, siehst du ihre Augen von Tränen überfließen ob der Wahrheit, die sie erkannt haben.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Zu meiner Überraschung fühlte ich Tränen in meinen Augen aufsteigen und ich versuchte mein bestes, sie vor den Schülern zu verbergen.”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ein weltbewegendes Ereignis<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Ein Wendepunkt in meinem Leben kam in der Zeit nach den Terroranschlägen in den USA am 11.September 2001. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Am darauf folgenden Tag nahm ich die U-Bahn und bemerkte wie verängstigt die Menschen waren.  Ich hatte auch Angst vor einer Wiederholung solcher Taten in Großbritannien.  In jener Zeit begannen die westlichen Menschen diese Religion zu fürchten, die sie für den Terrorismus verantwortlich machten. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Allerdings haben mich meine Erfahrungen mit Muslimen zu einer anderen Richtung geführt.  Ich begann mich zu fragen: ´Warum der Islam?  Warum beschuldigen wir den Islam für die Aktion von Terroristen, die zufälligerweise Muslime waren, während keiner das Christentum für den Terrorismus verantwortlich machte, als einige Christen dasselbe getan hatten?   <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Eines Tages wollte ich zur größten Moschee in London, um mehr über diese Religion zu hören.  Als ich zur Londoner Zentralmoschee kam, saß dort Yusuf Islam, der frühere Popsänger, in eine Kreis und sprach zu ein paar Leuten über den Islam.  Nach einer Weile fragte ich ihn: ´Was muss ich tun, um Muslim zu werden?´”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Er antwortete, dass ein Muslim an einen Gott glauben sollte, fünfmal am Tag betet und während des Ramadhan fastet.  Ich unterbrach ihn und sagte, dass ich all dies glaubte und sogar im Ramadhan gefastet hatte.  Da fragte er: ´Worauf wartest du noch?  Was hält dich davon ab?´  Ich sagte: ´Nein, ich habe nicht vor zu konvertieren.´ <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“In diesem Moment wurde der Gebetsruf gemacht und jeder machte sich zum Gebet fertig und stellte sich in die Reihe zum Beten.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ich saß hinten und weinte und weinte.  Dann sagte ich zu mir selbst: ´Wem versuche ich etwas vorzumachen?´<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Nachdem sie ihr Gebet beendet hatten, eilte ich zu Yusuf Islam, und bat ihn, mir die Worte beizubringen, mit denen ich meine Konvertierung bekannt geben konnte.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Nachdem er mir seine Bedeutung auf englisch erklärt hatte, rezitierte ich nach ihm auf arabisch, dass es keinen Gott gibt außer Allah und dass Muhammad der Gesandte Allahs ist”, erzählte Tawfiq weiter und musste seine Tränen zurück halten. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

‘Gärten des Islam’<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

So hat das Leben einen anderen Lauf genommen.  Tawfiq lebt in Ägypten und schrieb ein Buch über die Grundlagen des Islam.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Auf die Frage hin, warum er sein Buch Gärten der Wonne: eine Einleitung zum Islam genannt hatte, bemerkte er, dass jeder sagt, der Islam ist keine Religion des Terrors, und keine Religion des Hasses, aber keiner versucht zu erklären, was er ist.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Da entschloss ich mich, dieses Buch zu schreiben, um den Nicht-Muslimen eine Vorstellung über die Grundprinzipien des Islam zu geben.  Ich versuchte, den Menschen zu erzählen, wie wunderbar der Islam ist und dass der Islam die außergewöhnlichsten Schätze besitzt, von denen der wichtigste die Liebe der Muslime für einander ist.  Der Prophet sagte: ´Selbst ein Lächeln in das Gesicht deines Bruders ist ein Almosen.´ <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tawfiq erzählte der Gazette, dass er an einem Buch über den Propheten Muhammad [Gottes Segen und Frieden seien mit ihm] schreibe, von dem er denkt, dass es sich von vielen Büchern, die bereits über ihn geschrieben worden sind, unterscheidet. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Er denkt, dass der “beste und schnellste Weg” um der Welt Wissen über das wahre Bild des Islam zu vermitteln darin besteht, im wirklichen Leben mit einem  guten Beispiel voranzugehen.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Constatarás que os piores inimigos dos crentes, entre os humanos, são os judeus e os idólatras. Constatarás que aqueles que estão mais próximos do afeto dos fiéis são os que dizem: “Somos cristãos!”, porque possuem sacerdotes e não ensoberbecem de coisa alguma. E, ao escutarem o que foi revelado ao Mensageiro, tu vês lágrimas a lhes brotarem nos olhos; reconhecem naquilo a verdade, dizendo: Ó Senhor nosso, cremos! Inscreve-nos entre os testemunhadores!”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n

Foi o que aconteceu com o ex-padre católico britânico Idris Tawfiq na recitação do livro sagrado do Islã, o Alcorão, para seus alunos em uma escola na Grã-Bretanha.  E esse foi um dos passos importantes em sua jornada de conversão ao Islã.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Durante uma palestra recente que deu no British Council no Cairo, Tawfiq deixou claro que não tem arrependimentos em relação ao seu passado e em relação ao que os cristãos fazem e sua vida no Vaticano por cinco anos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Gostei de ser um padre que ajudou as pessoas por alguns anos. Entretanto, no fundo não estava feliz e sentia que havia algo que não estava certo. Felizmente, e é a vontade de Deus, alguns eventos e coincidências em minha vida me levaram ao Islã,” disse ele a um auditório lotado no British Council.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Uma segunda coincidência importante para Tawfiq foi sua decisão de deixar seu trabalho no Vaticano, um passo seguido por uma viagem ao Egito.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Costumava pensar no Egito como um país das pirâmides, camelos, areia e tamareiras. Na verdade peguei um vôo charter para Hurghada.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chocado ao descobrir que era semelhante a algumas praias européias, peguei o primeiro ônibus para o Cairo e passei a semana mais maravilhosa de minha vida.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Essa foi minha primeira introdução aos muçulmanos e ao Islã.  Notei que os egípcios são um povo gentil e doce, mas também muito forte.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Como todos os bretões, meu conhecimento sobre os muçulmanos naquela época não passava do que ouvia na TV sobre suicidas e combatentes, dando a impressão de que o Islã é uma religião de problemas. Entretanto, ao chegar ao Cairo descobri o quanto essa religião é bela. Pessoas muito simples vendendo coisas na rua abandonavam seu negócio e direcionavam seus rostos para Allah e oravam no momento que ouviam a chamada para oração vinda da mesquita. Têm uma fé forte na presença e vontade de Allah. Oram, jejuam, ajudam os necessitados e sonham em viajar para Meca com a esperança de viver no paraíso na vida futura,” disse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“No meu retorno assumi meu antigo emprego de ensinar religião. A única disciplina compulsória na educação britânica é Estudos Religiosos. Ensinava sobre Cristianismo, Islã, Judaísmo, Budismo e outras. Então todos os dias eu tinha que ler sobre essas religiões para ser capaz de dar minhas aulas aos estudantes, muitos dos quais eram refugiados muçulmanos árabes. Em outras palavras, ensinar o Islã me ensinou muitas coisas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ao contrário de muitos adolescentes problemáticos, esses estudantes davam um bom exemplo do que um muçulmano pode ser. Eram educados e gentis. Então se desenvolveu uma amizade entre nós e eles perguntaram se podiam usar minha sala de aula para orações durante o mês de jejum do Ramadã.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Felizmente, minha sala era a única com um tapete. E assim me acostumei a sentar nos fundos, observando-os orar por um mês. Procurei encorajá-los a jejuar durante o Ramadã jejuando com eles, mesmo não sendo ainda um muçulmano.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Uma vez, enquanto recitava uma tradução do Alcorão sagrado na aula, cheguei ao seguinte versículo:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“E, ao escutarem o que foi revelado ao Mensageiro, tu vês lágrimas a lhes brotarem nos olhos; reconhecem naquilo a verdade.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Para minha surpresa, senti lágrimas em meus olhos e tentei, com dificuldade, esconder de meus alunos.”<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Evento abalador<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

A virada em sua vida, entretanto, veio com as consequências dos ataques terroristas nos EUA em 11 de setembro de 2001.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“No dia seguinte estava no metrô e notei o quanto as pessoas estavam aterrorizadas. Eu também estava com medo da repetição de tais atos na Grã-Bretanha. Na época os ocidentais começaram a temer essa religião, que culpavam pelo terrorismo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Entretanto, minha experiência anterior com os muçulmanos me levou para uma direção diferente. Comecei a pensar: ‘Por que o Islã? Por que culpamos o Islã como uma religião pela ação de terroristas que por acaso são muçulmanos, quando ninguém acusou o Cristianismo de terrorismo quando alguns cristãos agiram da mesma forma?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Um dia fui para a maior mesquita em Londres, para ouvir mais sobre essa religião. Ao chegar à Mesquita Central de Londres, lá estava Yusuf Islam, o ex-cantor pop, sentado em um círculo falando com algumas pessoas sobre o Islã. Pouco depois, me peguei perguntando a ele: ‘O que se faz para se tornar um muçulmano?’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ele respondeu que um muçulmano deve acreditar em um Deus, orar cinco vezes ao dia e jejuar durante o Ramadã.  Eu o interrompi dizendo que acreditava em tudo isso e tinha até jejuado durante o Ramadã.  Então ele perguntou: ‘O que está esperando?  O que o detém?’ Eu disse: ‘Não, eu não pretendo me converter.’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Naquele momento foi feito o chamado para a oração e todos se prepararam e se alinharam para orar.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Sentei no fundo, e chorei e chorei. Então disse a mim mesmo: ‘A quem está tentando enganar?'<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Depois que terminaram suas orações, fui até Yusuf Islam e pedi a ele que me ensinasse as palavras através das quais eu anunciaria minha conversão.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Depois de explicar seus significados para mim em inglês, recitei depois dele em árabe que não há deus exceto Allah e que Muhammad é o Mensageiro de Allah,” relata Tawfiq, segurando suas lágrimas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

‘Jardins do Islã’<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Dessa forma sua vida tomou um curso diferente.  Vivendo no Egito, Tawfiq escreveu um livro sobre os princípios do Islã.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ao explicar por que ele escreveu seu livro Jardins de Deleite: uma Introdução Simples ao Islã, Tawfiq ressaltou que todos dizem que o Islã não é uma religião de terrorismo e ódio, mas ninguém tenta explicar o que é.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Então decidi escrever esse livro para dar aos não-muçulmanos uma idéia sobre os princípios básicos do Islã. Tentei dizer às pessoas como o Islã é belo e que o Islã tem os tesouros mais extraordinários, dos quais o mais importante é o amor que os muçulmanos sentem uns pelos outros. O Profeta diz ‘Até um sorriso para seu irmão é uma caridade.’<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tawfiq disse à Gazeta que está trabalhando em um livro sobre o Profeta Muhammad [que a misericórdia e bênçãos de Deus estejam sobre ele] que ele considera que será diferente dos muitos livros já escritos sobre ele.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 Ele acha que “o caminho melhor e mais rápido” de informar o mundo com a imagem verdadeira do Islã é dar um bom exemplo na vida real.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
