Out of Egypt: The Story of Passover in the Quran<\/span><\/h1>\r\n

Many Jews may be surprised to learn that Islam as preached by Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, was the same religion preached by Abraham, as well as of all other prophets mentioned in the Torah and the Bible.  Muslims honor all the prophets of the Jews – Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David and Solomon among others – as their own prophets and believe that they all preached on message, that is the belief in the Oneness of God. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here is how God ordered Muhammad to uphold the belief in the Oneness of God, which was upheld by Prophet Abraham:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah.<\/strong> <\/strong>.” (Quran 16:123)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is particularly noteworthy that in the Quran, there is no story that is recounted as many times and with as much emphasis, as the story of the bondage of the Children of Israel and their subsequent deliverance from Egypt’s Pharaoh.  The Quran quotes Moses as saying to his people:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“O my people!  Remember the blessings which God bestowed upon you when he raised up prophets among you, and made you your own masters, and granted unto you favors such as He had not granted to anyone else in the world.” (Quran 5:20)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

It was Moses, with the help and guidance of God Almighty, who led them out of Egypt towards a land of promise.  God in the Quran says what means: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“O children of Israel! Remember those blessings of Mine with which I graced you, and how I favored you above all other people.  And guard yourselves against a day when no soul will in aught avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be received from it, nor will they be helped.  And remember the time when We saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who afflicted you with cruel suffering, slaughtering your sons and sparing only your women — which was an awesome trial from your Sustainer; and when We cleft the sea before you, and thus saved you and caused Pharaoh’s people to drown before your very eyes.” (Quran 2:47-50)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The story is narrated elsewhere in the Quran, where we may read these verses:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, \"I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.\" Now? And you had disobeyed [Him] before and were of the corrupters? So today We will save you in body that you may be to those who succeed you a sign. And indeed, many among the people, of Our signs, are heedless. And We had certainty settled the Children of Israel in an agreeable settlement and provided them with good things. And they did not differ until [after] knowledge had come to them. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ” (Quran 10:90-93)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The torments inflicted on the Children of Israel by the Pharaoh were continuous and harsh; and so God sent His prophets Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) to warn the tyrant that he should stop the oppression of the Children of Israel and free them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But he was arrogant and refused to free the Jews, until the last of the plagues God sent as punishment.    <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Under guidance from God, the Israelites fled Egypt; while the Pharaoh and his men pursued them.  It seemed like their journey would end at the Red Sea which prevented their escape.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But a miracle happened when Moses struck the water with his staff: The waves of the Red Sea parted and the Israelites hurried along the passage between the parted waves.  Pharaoh and his soldiers followed; but by the time the Israelites reached the other shore, the sea closed in engulfing their pursuers.  Thus the Israelites were delivered from bondage, and the Pharaoh and his people perished.   <\/span><\/p>\r\n

When the Prophet Muhammad came to Madinah on the tenth of the lunar month of Muharram<\/em>, he found that the Jews there were fasting.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“The Prophet asked them why they were fasting on this day, and they explained that it was the day that God saved the Children of Israel from the Pharaoh, and that Moses fasted in thanks on this day.  The Prophet said, “We have more claim to Moses than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on the day.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Certains juifs seront peut-être surpris d’apprendre que l’islam, tel que prêché par Mohammed (que la paix et les bénédictions de Dieu soient sur lui) est la même religion que celle prêchée par Abraham et par tous les autres prophètes mentionnés dans la Torah et dans l’Évangile.  Les musulmans honorent tous les prophètes reconnus par les juifs – Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moïse, David et Salomon, entre autres – et les considèrent comme leurs propres prophètes et croient qu’ils ont tous prêché le même message, soit la croyance en l’unicité absolue de Dieu.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Voici comment Dieu demanda à Mohammed de maintenir et de faire respecter la croyance en l’unicité de Dieu, qui était prêchée par le prophète Abraham :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Puis Nous t’avons révélé, (ô Mohammed) : « Suis la religion d’Abraham, le probe.  Il n’était point du nombre des polythéistes. » (Coran 16:123)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Il est intéressant de constater que, dans le Coran, aucune autre histoire n’est racontée autant de fois, et avec autant d’insistance, que celle de la servitude des enfants d’Israël et de leur délivrance de l’emprise du pharaon d’Égypte.  Le Coran cite Moïse disant à son peuple :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Et (rappelez-vous) lorsque Moïse dit à son peuple : « Ô mon peuple!  Rappelez-vous le bienfait de Dieu sur vous, lorsqu’Il a désigné des prophètes parmi vous et a fait de vous des rois.  Et Il vous a donné ce qu’Il n’avait donné à aucune autre de (Ses) créatures. » (Coran 5:20)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

C’est Moïse qui, avec l’aide de Dieu, mena son peuple hors d’Égypte pour le guider vers une terre promise.  Dieu dit, dans le Coran :<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Ô enfants d’Israël !  Rappelez-vous Mon bienfait dont Je vous ai comblés et comment Je vous ai préférés à toutes les autres nations (de l’époque).  Et prémunissez-vous contre un jour où aucune âme ne profitera à une autre et où l’on n’acceptera d’elle aucune intercession, où l’on ne recevra d’elle aucune compensation.   Et ils ne seront point secourus.  Et (rappelez-vous) lorsque Nous vous avons délivrés des gens de Pharaon qui vous infligeaient de terribles supplices, massacrant vos fils et épargnant vos femmes.  C’était là une très grande épreuve de la part de votre Seigneur.  Et (rappelez-vous) lorsque Nous vous avons fait traverser la mer et vous avons sauvés en noyant les gens de Pharaon devant vos yeux. » (Coran 2:47-50)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

L’histoire est racontée ailleurs, dans le Coran, en ces termes:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Et Nous fîmes traverser la mer aux enfants d’Israël.  Pharaon et ses armées les poursuivirent avec acharnement et hargne  jusqu’à ce que, submergé par les flots, (Pharaon) s’exclame : « Je crois que nul ne doit être adoré en dehors de Celui en qui croient les enfants d’Israël, et je suis du nombre des musulmans! »  [Dieu dit] : « Quoi?  Maintenant?  Alors que jusqu’ici tu étais rebelle et semais la corruption sur terre?!  Nous allons aujourd’hui épargner ton corps afin que tu sois un signe pour ceux qui viendront après toi.  Mais en vérité,  beaucoup de gens ne prêtent aucune attention à Nos signes.  Certes, Nous avons établi les enfants d’Israël dans un endroit honorable et Nous leur avons attribué de bonnes nourritures.  Par la suite, ce n’est qu’au moment où leur est parvenu le savoir qu’ils se sont mis à diverger.  Certes, ton Seigneur jugera entre eux, au Jour de la Résurrection, sur ce qui les divisait. » (Coran 10:90-93)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Les tourments infligés aux enfants d’Israël par le pharaon d’Égypte étaient sévères et incessants.  C’est pourquoi Dieu envoya Ses prophètes Moïse et Aaron (que la paix soit sur eux et que Dieu les loue) pour mettre en garde le tyran et lui intimer de mettre un terme à l’oppression des enfants d’Israël et de les libérer de son joug.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mais il était fort arrogant et refusa net, jusqu’à la dernière des plaies que Dieu lui envoya en guise de châtiment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sous la protection de Dieu, les Israélites s’enfuirent d’Égypte, Pharaon et ses hommes à leurs trousses.  Puis, lorsqu’ils arrivèrent devant la Mer Rouge, incapables de continuer, ils crurent leur fuite terminée.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mais un miracle se produisit : Moïse frappa l’eau avec son bâton et la mer se sépara, créant un passage salutaire.  Les enfants d’Israël s’y précipitèrent.  Pharaon et ses soldats tentèrent de les suivre, mais au moment où le dernier Israélite atteignit la rive opposée, la mer se referma sur eux.  C’est ainsi que les enfants d’Israël furent délivrés de la servitude et que Pharaon et ses soldats périrent.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quand le prophète Mohammed vint à Médine le dixième jour du mois lunaire de Mouharram, il constata que les juifs jeûnaient.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 « Le Prophète leur demanda pourquoi ils jeûnaient en ce jour particulier et ils lui expliquèrent que c’était le jour où Dieu avait sauvé les enfants d’Israël de Pharaon et que Moïse avait pour habitude de jeûner, ce jour-là, en signe de reconnaissance.  Le Prophète dit alors : « Nous sommes plus à même de suivre Moïse que vous. »  Il jeûna ce jour-là et invita les musulmans à faire de même. » (Sahih al-Boukhari<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Fora do Egito: A história daPáscoa judaica no Alcorão<\/span><\/h1>\r\n

Muitos judeus podem se surpreender ao descobrir que o Islã pregado por Muhammad, que Deus o exalte, era a mesma religião pregada por Abraão e também por outros profetas mencionados no Torá e na Bíblia.  Os muçulmanos honram todos os profetas dos judeus - Abraão, Jacó, José, Moisés, Davi e Salomão, entre outros - como seus próprios profetas e acreditam que todos pregavam uma mensagem, que é a crença na Unicidade de Deus. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Aqui é como Deus ordenou a Muhammad a sustentar a crença na Unicidade de Deus, que foi defendida pelo profeta Abraão:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“E revelamos-te isto (Muhammad), para que adotes o credo de Abraão, o monoteísta, que jamais se contou entre os idólatras.”  (Alcorão 16:123)<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

É particularmente notável que no Alcorão não exista uma história que seja recontada tantas vezes e com tanta ênfase como a história da servidão dos filhos de Israel e sua subsequente libertação do faraó do Egito.  O Alcorão cita Moisés dizendo ao seu povo:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ó meu povo!<\/strong>  Lembrai-vos das mercês e Deus para convosco, quando fez surgir, dentre vós, profetas, e vos fez reis e vos concedeu o que não havia concedido a nenhum dos vossos contemporâneos.” (Alcorão 5:20)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Foi Moisés, com a ajuda e orientação de Deus Todo-Poderoso, que os liderou para fora do Egito em direção à terra prometida.  Deus no Alcorão diz o que significa: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

“Ó Filhos de Israel!<\/strong> Recordai-vos das Minhas mercês, com as quais vos agraciei, e de que vos preferi aos vossos contemporâneos.  <\/strong>E temei o dia em que nenhuma alma poderá advogar por outra, nem lhe será admitida intercessão alguma, nem lhe será aceita compensação, nem ninguém será socorrido!<\/strong>  Recordai-vos de quando vos livramos do povo do Faraó, que vos infligia o mais cruel castigo, degolando os vossos filhos e deixando com vida as vossas mulheres. Naquilo tivestes uma grande prova do vosso Senhor. E de quando dividimos o mar e vos salvamos, e afogamos o povo do Faraó, enquanto olháveis.” Alcorão 2:47-50)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

A história é narrada em outra passagem no Alcorão, onde podemos ler esses versículos:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“E fizemos atravessar o mar os israelitas; porém o Faraó e seu exército perseguiram-no iníqua e hostilmente até que, estando a ponto de afogar-se, o Faraó disse: “Creio agora que não há mais divindade além de Deus em que creem os israelitas, e sou um dos submissos!”<\/strong> <\/strong>(E foi-lhe dito): Agora crês, ao passo que antes te havias rebelado e eras um dos corruptores!<\/strong> <\/strong>Porém, hoje salvamos apenas o teu corpo, para que sirvas de exemplo à tua posteridade. Em verdade, há muitos humanos que estão negligenciando os Nossos versículos.<\/strong> <\/strong>E concedemos aos israelitas um agradável abrigo e os agraciamos com todo o bem. Mas disputaram entre si, depois de receberem o conhecimento. Teu Senhor julgará entre eles pelas suas divergências, no Dia da Ressurreição.” (Alcorão 10:90-93)<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Os tormentos infligidos aos Filhos de Israel pelo faraó eram contínuos e duros e, então, Deus enviou Seus profetas Moisés e Aarão (que Deus exalte a ambos) para advertir o tirano de que devia parar a opressão sobre os Filhos de Israel e libertá-los.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mas ele era arrogante e se recusou a libertar os judeus, até a última das pragas que Deus enviou como punição.   <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sob a orientação de Deus os israelitas fugiram do Egito, enquanto o faraó e seus homens os perseguiam.  Parecia que a jornada terminaria no Mar Vermelho, que impediu que escapassem.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mas aconteceu um milagre quando Moisés bateu na água com seu cajado: as ondas do Mar Vermelho se abriram e os israelitas correram pela passagem entre as ondas abertas.  O faraó e seus soldados os seguiram, mas quando os israelitas alcançaram a outra margem, o mar se fechou tragando seus perseguidores.  Assim os israelitas foram libertados da servidão e o faraó e seu povo pereceram.  <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Quando o profeta Muhammad veio para Medina no décimo mês lunar deMuharram<\/em>, descobriu que os judeus de lá estavam jejuando.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

“O profeta lhes perguntou por que estavam jejuando e eles explicaram que foi o dia em que Deus salvou os Filhos de Israel do faraó e Moisés jejuou nesse dia em agradecimento.<\/strong>  O profeta disse: “Temos mais direitos sobre Moisés do que vocês.” <\/strong>Ele jejuou naquele dia e ordenou aos muçulmanos jejuar naquele dia.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari<\/em>)<\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n
